Jack BERGMAN (R-Watersmeet) coasted to Victory Township a second term over Democrat, and fellow military Menominee County veteran, Matt MORGAN. Montmorency County Ontonagon County Despite renewed questions about his Upper Peninsula Oscoda County residency, the 71-year-old former Three-Star General in Otsego County the Marine Corps improved on his 15-point margin in a Presque Isle County district that is trending in the Republicans' direction. Schoolcraft County Bergman benefited from putting a bug in Trump's ear about funding a new Soo Lock earlier this term and the Republican chief executive following through on a promise to make the long-awaited and long-needed infrastructure project a priority. Morgan stumbled out of the gate when he mistakenly used a P.O. Box address on his petitions as opposed to a physical address. The 46-year-old was forced to wage a successful write-in campaign during the primary to make the General Election ballot. 2nd Mason Bill Huizenga (R-Zeeland) 2011-Present Mason County (part) Amber Township Branch Township Custer Township Eden Township Hamlin Township (part) Logan Township Ludington city Pere Marquette Township Riverton Township Scottville city Summit Township MIRS Analysis (November 6, 2018): In the 2nd District, U.S. Rep. Bill HUIZENGA (R-Zeeland) swatted Democrat Dr. Rob DAVIDSON in the most competitive West Michigan congressional district in decades. Huizenga captured the population bases in Ottawa and Muskegon while Davidson managed support in some of the district's smaller counties. The emergency room doctor managed to raise around $1 million and benefited from the Michigan Democratic Party making an issue about Huizenga's use of campaign funds to buy expensive meals in out-of-state vacation locations like DisneyWorld. Huizenga found himself on his heels defending his support to eliminate the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Instead, he looked for ways to change the conversation to one about the country's improving economy and preserving local economic drivers like the S.S. Badger coal -fired ferry from Ludington to Wisconsin. 4th Clare John Moolenaar (R-Midland) 2015-Present Clare County Gladwin Member, Appropriations Gladwin County Missaukee Missaukee County Ogemaw Ogemaw County Osceola Osceola County Roscommon Roscommon County Wexford Wexford County 5th Arenac Dan Kildee (D-Flint) 2013-Present Arenac County Iosco Member, Ways and Means Iosco County MAC District 8 State Senate Districts District County Incumbent (Party-Hometown) Term Communities Represented 33 rd Clare Rick Outman (R-Six Lakes) First Clare County Estimated GOP Base = 62.0% Former three-term state representative (2011-2016), US Army Veteran who saw combat in Beirut, owner/operator of third -generation small business 35 th Benzie Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington) First Benzie County Crawford Majority Caucus Chairperson Crawford County Kalkaska Chair, Health Policy and Human Services Committee Kalkaska County Lake Lake County Leelanau Estimated GOP Base: 64.49% Leelanau County Manistee Manistee County Mason During the 2017-2018 legislative session, while a Mason County Missaukee member of the Michigan House, he voted for Mayor Missaukee County Ogemaw Duggan’s “Driver’s Choice” auto no-fault plan Ogemaw County Osceola Osceola County Roscommon Former one-term state representative (2017-2018), Roscommon County Wexford former Vice Chair of House Insurance Committee, Wexford County former Chair of Mason County Commissioners, owner of pest control company 36 th Alcona Jim Stamas (R-Midland) Second Alcona County Alpena Chair, Appropriations Committee Alpena County Arenac Arenac County Gladwin Estimated GOP Base = 64.34% Gladwin County Iosco Iosco County Montmorency Former three-term member of Michigan House (2009- Montmorency County Oscoda 2014), former House Majority Floor Leader (2011- Oscoda County Otsego 2014), former Midland County Commissioner (2005- Otsego County Presque Isle 2008) and Midland Township Trustee (1997-2004), Presque Isle County owner and former general manager of Pizza Sam's, the eatery in Midland the Stamas family has owned for nearly 5 0 years 37 th Antrim Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City) Second Antrim County Charlevoix Assistant Majority Leader Charlevoix County Cheboygan Member, Community Health/Human Services Cheboygan County Chippewa Appropriations Subcommittee Chippewa County Emmet Emmet County Grand Traverse Estimated GOP Base = 63.31% Grand Traverse County Luce Luce County Mackinac Former three -term state representative (20 09 -2014), Ma ckinac County former five-term member of Grand Traverse Board of Commissioners, former general manager of the Captain’s Quarters men’s clothing store in Traverse City 38 th Alger Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan) First Alger County Baraga Caucus Dean Baraga County Delta Delta County Dickinson Estimated GOP Base = 54.93% Dickinson County Gogebic Gogebic County Houghton Former three-term state representative (2011-2016), Houghton County Iron life-long dairy farmer, former substitute teacher Iron County Keweenaw Keweenaw County Marquette Gongwer Analysis (November 6, 2018): The 38th Marquette County Menominee Senate District will remain in Republican hands after Menominee County Ontonagon former Vulcan Rep. Ed McBroom was able to emerge Ontonagon County Schoolcraft victorious after navigating a bruising, expensive battle Schoolcraft County royale in the Upper Peninsula over Rep. Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) in a critical district targeted doggedly by both parties. With all precincts reporting, unofficial results had Mr. McBroom winning with 54.6 percent of the vote and Mr. Dianda taking 43.7 percent. Mr. McBroom slugged it out with Mr. Dianda in an expensive and sometimes nasty race with heavy advertising and attack ads. He was able to secure support from the daughter of the late Rep. John Kivela and was able to capitalize on a conservative shift in the U.P. in recent years. MIRS Analysis (November 6, 2018): The Republicans' won stand-out win of the night came in the Upper Peninsula, where Ed McBROOM overcame personal tragedy to outlast Rep. Scott DIANDA in a race where the SDF sent up a team of foot soldiers and more than $100,000 to help their candidate. The death of McBroom's brother, with whom he ran the family dairy farm, put Ed's future in the race in question. But with the same genuine personality that helped Gary McDOWELL 10 years ago, McBroom slowly overtook Dianda on the campaign trail. The endorsement of the daughter of the late Rep. John KIVELA proved to be a devasting blow to Dianda. Kivela was remembered in Marquette and points beyond as a bi-partisan problem solver. She, describing McBroom in those same terms, gave him a boost in a district that's trending the ri ght way for Republicans.
