Ryan Blaney Remains a Key Pillar of NASCAR’S Youth Movement and an Important Part of Team Penske’S Championship-Winning NASCAR Program At 27-years-old, Ryan Blaney remains a key pillar of NASCAR’s youth movement and an important part of Team Penske’s championship-winning NASCAR program. Full of enthusiasm, passion, and talent, Blaney is in his 10th season with Team Penske in 2021 and his fourth year racing full-time for the team in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS). The native of High Point, N.C. and third-generation driver returns to the No. 12 team this season racing the Menards Ford Mustang. Blaney will begin his second season working with experienced series crew chief Todd Gordon and race engineer Miles Stanley, both of whom won the 2018 NCS championship with driver Joey Logano. Blaney also earned an opportunity to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2015. He made 16 NCS starts for Wood Brothers Racing, Team Penske’s technical alliance partner. In 2018, Team Penske expanded to a three-car NCS program as Blaney transitioned back to the team to compete alongside Logano and Brad Keselowski. Blaney returned to Victory Lane as the No. 12 Ford team won the inaugural Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The win allowed Blaney to advance to the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Playoffs and he eventually nished 10th in the nal championship standings. In 2019, Blaney earned a victory in NASCAR’s premier series for the third consecutive season and he also earned an NCS Playoffs berth for the third straight season. He produced a thrilling victory at Talladega Superspeedway in October that propelled him into the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs as he nished a career-best seventh in the nal champi- onship standings. Blaney earned a victory and raced his way into the NCS Playoffs in NASCAR’s premier series for the fourth consecutive season in 2020. He produced another thrilling victory at Talladega in June which made him the rst driver since 2007 to win back-to-back races at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. Blaney tied a career-high in top-ve nishes (11) and surpassed his most laps led in a season (668) during a productive 2020 campaign. Blaney has a wide variety of interests outside of the racetrack. Instead, Logano notched his first back-to-back wins (and fifth overall of the season) by taking the checkered flag at Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. “This is the mark of a champion — driving his hardest at the end of the season, and winning even when he doesn’t have to,” said Wiley X Co-Owner Myles Freeman, Jr. “Joey is building up incredible momentum that will make him hard to beat. Racing fans can see how much he wants this Sprint Cup Championship, and it’s going to be very exciting for us to watch how things unfold over the next few weeks,” added Freeman. Logano literally had to battle to the end for this win at Kansas Speedway. This victory wasn’t without some controversy (the race was won after a green-white-checkered-flag restart and an extra two laps past the scheduled distance) but it certainly showed off Logano’s aggressive driving style and desire to win. Logano seemed to have the fastest car on the track all day, yet he still found himself behind Matt Kenseth (also sponsored by Wiley X) in the closing laps of the race.

(Saturday, June 30, 2012) – Sam Hornish Jr. continued his string of rock-solid finishes in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. He finished sixth in Friday night’s Feed the Children 300 at Kentucky Speedway. The driver of the No. 12 Wurth Dodge Challenger posted his eighth top-10 finish and third consecutive. He remains fourth in the series championship standings, 33 points behind leader Austin Dillon. “That’s the thing that you’ve got to do; you’ve got to be consistent,” Hornish said. “We need to keep being smart and doing the things that we’re doing. We’re chipping away at it. We’d love to do it all in about two races and be leading the points but it’s not going to happen that way. We just need to be smart about what we do.” Brad Keselowski overcame the loss of track position early in the race to finish seventh, his eighth top-10 finish in 11 starts this season. Keselowski was running third when he pitted during the first caution of the race on lap 26. The crew had an issue with the right-front during the stop plus receiving a penalty for pitting outside the pit box and a tire violation. Keselowski restarted 29th but was able to work his way back onto the top five by lap 130.

This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.
