10 DISCOVER BROADSTAIRS 2017 www.discoverbroadstairs.com www.discoverbroadstairs.com DISCOVER BROADSTAIRS 2017 11 THANET SCHOOL RECIPE COMPETITION

The knives will be out (but in a good way!) at in May. Twelve budding young chefs reaching the final will be competing for glory in the 2017 Thanet School Recipe Challenge, now in its 7th year.

Tesco and East Kent College, sponsors of the Recipe Challenge, will open their doors of its training kitchen to twelve finalists who will fill the room with excitement and mouth-watering cookery smells, getting to grips with unfamiliar equipment, in a Master-Chef style finale.

The young chefs will be tasked to create innovative recipes which include at least one of the Thanet Earth crops of tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers.

Mike Corbett, Technical Manager and food guru for salad products said “Every year we’re amazed by how skilled these young chefs are, and their accomplished use of the delicious products grown at Thanet Earth reinforces how versatile these crops can be. In the Thanet area, this competition really captures the imagination, and we’re very pleased that local schools have embraced how important it is to help children connect with great, healthy food”.

The chef tutors and college catering students will be on hand as ever to reassure and assist in the college kitchens, and our judges – Jason Freedman (Curiously Kentish), Chetna Makan (Food with Chetna), Mike Corbett (Tesco), Eleanor Mansell (Tesco) and Jo Scott (Broadstairs Food Festival) love watching the preparation of the dishes and the all-important tasting of the finished recipes. Chetna Makan local resident and BBC Bake Off semi-finalist said “she was looking for innovative use of ingredients and exciting flavours”.

Just reaching the finals is a significant achievement, and each finalist will be rewarded with a signed copy of Chetna’s recipe book along with a trophy and a commemorative apron. The winners bagged a tasty £300 in Tesco vouchers for their school, and they’ll see their recipe printed as a recipe card at Tesco.

The Thanet Recipe Challenge is open to all schools in the Thanet area and regular updates on the competition can be found at the Thanet Earth education website www.discoverthanetearth.com

Broadstairs is, rightly, loved for its sandy bays, quirky fishermens’ cottages and 1950’s ice-cream parlours; for its wealth of restaurants, bars and cafes – and an abundance of community-led festivals such as Blues Bash, Dickens Festival, Folk Week and the Broadstairs Food Festival.

That is what makes present day Broadstairs a charming place to live in – or to enjoy as a visitor.

But what lies behind 2017 Broadstairs?

Charles Dickens’ quote regarding his ‘favourite watering hole’ is well-known but Mary Ann Evans (who wrote under the pseudonym of George Elliot) also enjoyed ‘discreet holidays in Broadstairs’ in 1852, staying with Herbert Spencer, at Chandos Cottage, corner of Oscar Road and Chandos Road. (Spencer is best known for the expression “survival of the fittest”, which he coined in Principles of Biology (1864), after reading Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species.)

Mary Ann Evans wrote “Broadstairs is perfect, and I have the snuggest little lodgings conceivable. With a motherly good woman and a nice little damsel of fourteen to wait on me.’ It appears she would have happily stayed Cheek, local resident and international mosaic homes, nursing homes and boarding guesthouses, closed its doors in 2014 – longer but ‘Providence, seeing that I needed artist, created a mosaic which hangs on the houses. Postgate – creator of the childrens’ shows ‘Ivor overtook hansom cabs. the Engine,’ ‘Noggin the Nog’, ‘Bagpuss’ and Over the years, many of the houses in Broadstairs still remains a lovely place to ‘The Clangers’ – until his death in 2008. Martin Chandos Square have served as residential Anchor House, the last of the square’s visit – and an even better place to live.
