Ll Be Your Huckleberry
I’ll Be Your Huckleberry It is amazing what will spark a memory. I was transferring a client’s film today and the Christmas scene that appeared on the screen was of a young boy who had just received an inflatable punching bag in the image of Huckleberry Hound. I had one of those. And I certainly remember Hanna-Barbera’s Huckleberry Hound being a favorite cartoon when I was growing up. But my memory played a trick on me. I would have sworn that the Huckleberry Hound Show that I watched as a youngster consisted of three segments: Huckleberry himself; Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo (whose segment eventually became more popular than those of the titular star); and (I thought) Quick Draw McGraw with his sidekick “bing bing bing” Ricochet Rabbit. But I was wrong. Quick Draw had his own show. The third segment for Huck, as he is familiarly known to his young fans, involved a pair of mice, Pixie and Dixie, and the object of their abuse, the cat Mr. Jinx. Just goes to show how memories can tend to distort and blend together over time. A few trivia tidbits about this cartoon from my past: Huckleberry Hound debuted in 1958 and featured a slow moving, slow talking blue dog who held a multitude of jobs and always seemed to succeed due to either luck or an obstinate persistence. Huck was voiced by Daws Butler who also provided the voices for Wally Gator, Yogi Bear, Quick Draw McGraw, and Snagglepuss. Daws Butler fashioned the voice of Yogi Bear after Art Carney’s portrayal of Ed Norton in The Honeymooners. -

The Southern Scream Volume XII, Issue 2, Fall 2009 For ACE members in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, & the Florida panhandle Getting Intimidated at Carowinds in 2010 by Max Cannon Intimidator, a B&M hyper coaster, will premiere at the park for the 2010 season. A hyper coaster for Carowinds has been the subject of much speculation over the years (and no, it won’t go under the bridge.) When the park opened this year, the log flume attraction was boarded up. The attraction itself disappeared and the whole area was being cleaned up. Something big was coming. Now, we know how big. Intimidator, named after the popular NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, is being billed as the largest single investment in the park’s 37 year history. This investment will stand at 232 ft tall, the tallest B&M coaster in North America and the 8th tallest overall in the US. It will have seven drops, one each for Earnhardt’s seven championships, that will range from 211 ft to 48ft. In addition to the first 211 foot drop, the second (178-feet) and third (151-feet) hills are also taller than any roller coaster at Carowinds. This behemoth was change the face of the park in a major way. The coaster will reach up to 80mph along the 5300 plus feet of red track and grey supports, which will parallel the main guest parking lot and the turnaround will shadow over the South Gate entrance. Other features of the coaster will include: an “S” curve, a Carrick bend (AKA a panoramic u-turn), and an initial 211 ft drop at a 74 degree angle. -

After checking in, you run to the rollercoaster ride you have been hearing about for a year; Fury 325. You are now barreling down the track at 95 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns along its 6,602 feet of track. You’re screaming at the top of your lungs in fear but enjoying every minute of it. The only thing holding you in your seat is a safety harness... but how does physics help keep you in your seat? How do the laws of physics affect amusement park ride design? Today you will learn how the basic principles of physics apply to the amusement rides at Carowinds! All rides create forces through the use of engines…diesel, electric, steam, hydraulic, etc. They use lots of pulleys, gears, levers and other mechanical devices to transfer these forces throughout the ride and eventually to the riders. So why do you feel the forces you experience on the rides? All can be explained by Newton’s Three Laws of motion: 1. An object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest tends to stay at rest until acted upon by an unbalanced force. (Inertia) 2. F = ma (force is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration) 3. For every action (force) there is an equal and opposite reaction (force). -
