The Silver Beaver Award A Message From Our Key 3 Dear Scouters, WELCOME TO OUR COUNCIL ANNUAL RECOGNITION CELEBRATION! On behalf of the Greater Los Angeles Area Council Board of Directors, we THANK YOU for all you do to deliver the promise of Scouting in our community. Of the thousands of awards that are presented each year, the Silver Beaver is the highest and most prestigious honor awarded to a volunteer by a local council. We are grateful to all of the volunteers who serve as mentors to youth in our Packs, Troops, Crews , and Posts. While the past year has been especially challenging for Scouting and for our country, we are continuously impressed with the creativity and resolve that Scouting’s leaders have as they deliver the program. Tonight, we recognize the 2020 CLASS OF SILVER BEAVERS for their extraordinary leadership, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to Scouting’s values. As a movement whose leadership is overwhelmingly volunteer, the Boy Scouts of America recognizes those individuals who truly go above and beyond to guarantee the availability of a quality Scouting program. We proudly salute all of those who are being honored this evening. Thank you for being part of this important evening and for the leadership that you provide to the Greater Los Angeles Area Council. THE CLASS OF 2020 SILVER BEAVER AWARD RECIPIENTS Andrea Denise Arias – San Gabriel Valley District Brian Lee Best – Pio Pico District William John Burton – Board of Directors Matthew Chavez – Metropolitan District Daniel J. Garcia – San Gabriel Valley District John Hagop Kedeshian – Board of Directors Salvador Rodriguez – El Camino Real District Eric Schirding – Board of Directors John Michael Sherrard – Rose Bowl District Brian William Snaer, DDS – Rose Bowl District Andrea Denise Arias Andrea Denise Arias started her Scouting career as Brownie Scout in Indiana. Her favorite activity was attending summer camp at Camp NaWaKwa. The experience inspired her love of the outdoors and animals. When Andrea’s daughter was in first grade and joined Girl Scouts, Andrea became the co-leader and spent 7 years leading a group of girls in the troop. That was quite an adventure of many trips and outings, including to an overnight at Sea World. Andrea joined the Cub Scout program when her three youngest sons were in elementary school. She knew, as a single mom of Andrea Denise Arias five, that the program would benefit the boys in learning life San Gabriel Valley District skills. The Pack that they joined was experiencing a change of Silver Beaver Recipient leadership and about to lose a Cubmaster, which would then fold the unit. As one to always step up and volunteer, Andrea offered to lead the unit. This led to Andrea becoming trained in many positions in Scouting. She has since started 2 Scout units and currently a Scoutmaster of a girl troop in Monrovia. Learning and leading have always been topics that interested Andrea. She trained in all areas of Scouting and attended Wood Badge in 2015, Sea Badge in 2018, Powderhorn in 2018, and many commission college trainings (Masters) and University of Scouting (attendee and trainer). Andrea is the training chair for San Gabriel Valley District and on the council training team. Her favorite training is the Youth Protection Training that every adult must complete to be part of the program. When Andrea attended Wood Badge and found out she had to complete a ticket, it was natural to choose the camps as one goal. She became a Campmaster for the council camps in January 2016 and has never left. She has since been the camp administrator at Camp Trask, as well as the camp’s committee chair. She is currently the program chair for Trask and loves sharing the programs with the adults and youth that attend. Outside of Scouting, Andrea is a teacher and entrepreneur. She has taught Sunday school for over 10 years, been on the board of directors for non-profits, and worked with foster youth that aged of the system. She was involved in the Soroptomist Club and San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness. Brian Lee Best Brian Best joined Scouting as a Tiger Cub in 1983 with Pack 72, Greater Los Angeles Area Council as a third generation Scout following the footsteps of his grandfather and father. He was encouraged by his kindergarten teacher to find an extracurricular activity to help burn off excess energy so his mother signed him up and became a Den leader . He earned his Arrow of Light in 1987 and transitioned into Troop 72. Brian earned the Parvuli Dei award as a Cub Scout in 1984 and the Ad Altari Dei award as a Boy Scout in 1988. He attended numerous Scouting camps and served as Senior Patrol Leader at Cabrillo Beach summer camp on Catalina. As an active high- adventure backpacking Troop, Brian backpacked monthly and attended High Sierra and Grand Canyon Long Term Brian Lee Best Backpacking hikes spreading over multiple days and over 40 Pio Pico District miles each. When he earned the rank of Eagle in 1994, Brian Silver Beaver Recipient had logged hundreds of accumulated backpacking miles. Brian remained a Merit Badge Counselor for Graphic Art before graduating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1998 with a degree in Graphic Communications. He began his career with RR Donnelley in the printing industry. In 2001 he moved with his family to St. Charles, IL for a promotion with RR Donnelley. When his son, Dominic was old enough to join Tiger Cubs in 2006 Brian became a Den Leader for six years with Pack 154 Three Fires Council and earned the Den Leader Training Award and Silver Acorn during his tenure. Brian also pioneered a monthly hiking club program for Cub Scouts to introduce them to hiking prior to entering Boy Scouts. Brian and his family moved back to California in 2012. His son Dominic joined Troop 1005, Greater Los Angeles Council and Brian became an Assistant Scoutmaster earning the Scouter’s Training Knot . SUMMER 2016 Celebrating 150 Years in the Heart of White Plains The Sabbatical Pastor’s Letter Change and the Promise of Pentecost May 2016 There is an old joke about people not liking change. The joke is that the only people who like change are toll collectors and babies with wet diapers. You can tell it’s an old joke because toll collectors have disappeared with the invention of EZ Pass. Babies still need to be changed. Change is difficult. Transitions in life can be powerful and uncomfortable moments. They are challenging even when we think we are prepared for them. They can be even more unsettling when they ambush us unaware. Henri Bergson, a French philosopher once wrote, “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” Change is a fact of life. Change is a consequence of our being alive. We might even say that change is a necessary condition for our growth and maturity. Yet coming to terms with all of the emotional undercurrents that go along with change is not always easy for us. Putting a little one on a school bus for the first time can bring a parent to tears. Seeing your child attend his or her first prom makes you wonder where the time has flown. Retiring after years of productive and fulfilling work can bring unexpected feelings of vulnerability and emptiness. Although change is constant and inevitable we can still feel insecure and anxious about the uncertainty that change brings. Until my retirement in 2013, I served as the Canon for Deployment and Transition Ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
