Year 9 Senior Programme – Learning Cycle One

Module

Building on Students are beginning to cover content outlined in the new AQA A GCSE Geography specification. Throughout LC1-5 Prior Learning students are introduced to key themes across all physical and human topics. The aim of this year is to allow students to gain an overview of each topic at foundation stage, and focus on students improving their Geographical skills, and where appropriate, tackling contemporary and complex Geographical concepts by forming opinions based on evidence. Each topic will be taught in more detail in year 10&11 where exam technique will be introduced and focussed on.

Six ‘Key Ideas’ for this module have been created to guide students through the learning process. The specific specification Exam Board content is listed in italics beneath the key ideas. Links: 1. The global growth of tourism Topic Reasons for the global growth in tourism of 3 major locations (cities, and coasts), also focussing on the Progress importance of tourism in LIC’s. Statements 2. Tourism in the UK The importance of tourism in the UK looking at factors that affect tourist numbers in the UK. Case study of the Lake District and how people are attracted to National Parks.

3. Modern Tourism – Mass Tourism The impact of Mass Tourism in tropical areas – what are the causes, social, economic and environmental impacts and how is Mass Tourism managed

4. Modern Tourism – Extreme Tourism Examine the attractions of extreme environments, examine the problems that could occur with increases in extreme tourism and why there is a need for management.

5. Ecotourism in the Amazon Recap the meaning of ecotourism, create a project designed to examine the success of ecotourism and evaluate the importance of ecotourism to combat extreme tourism.

Assessment in week 6 will be against the above objectives.

GAP teaching will be informed by analysis of assessments in week 7.

Stage 1 “What are the types of tourist locations?”

Hypothesis: ‘Tourism is a global phenomena”

KGP Success Criteria

1. To give examples of tourist locations across the world across cities, mountains and coasts  GP1-6: To be able to describe the characteristics of the three types of tourist locations  GP1-3: To give at least 1 example of a location around the world that fits into each category and explain reasons why tourists might enjoy visiting these locations  GP4-6: To be able to compare the different locations and give examples of types of tourists you would expect to find visiting these regions

Stage 2 “The Global Growth of Tourism”

Hypothesis: Tourism is more important for Richer countries than poorer countries

KGP Success Criteria

2. To examine the reasons for the global growth in tourism  GP1-3: To be able to identify the reasons why tourism has increased

 GP4-6: To explain why these reasons for growth have led to an increase In tourism and explore the ideas that may cause tourism to grow further in the future

Stage 3 “The importance of tourism in LIC’s”

Hypothesis: Tourism is more important for Richer countries than poorer countries

3.To analyse the importance of tourism in LIC’s  GP1-6: To recap/learn the difference between HIC’s and LIC’s  GP1-3: To analyse data to explain how important tourism is for LIC’s  GP1-3: To look at the impact of natural disasters on tourism in LIC’s  GP4-6: To explore the consequences of the impact of natural disasters in LIC’s who rely on tourism as a major income compared to a HIC

1. The characteristics of National Parks looking at the reasons why tourists might visit  GP1-6: To be able to name and locate the UK’s National Parks  GP1-3: To describe the characteristics of a National Park of choice across the UK and give examples of the attractions found in this location  GP4-6: To compare the chosen UK National Park with a National Park in another country to examine the similarities/differences in the attractions of these National Parks

Stage 3 “How are the UK National Parks managed?”

3. To look at different management strategies associated with tourism in the Lake District National Park.

 GP1-6: To describe the problems causes by tourists in the Lake District (footpath erosion etc.)  GP1-3: To describe in detail the management of at least 1 problem caused by tourism in the Lake District

 GP4-6: To explain in detail the management of several problem caused by tourism in the Lake District and give an opinion about the effectiveness of these management strategies.

Stage 2: Case study – ecotourism in the Amazon Rainforest

KGP Success Criteria:

2. Case study of ecotourism in the Amazon examining the successes of the projects at managing the impact of tourism.  GP1-6: Create a case study research project about a given example of an eco-tourist location in the Amazon Rainforest

Stage 3: REACH TIME - Comparison

KGP Success Criteria:

 Complete REACH time to improve work based on KGP  Complete KGP exam question relating to the success of management of either a Mass Tourism OR Extreme Tourism.

Revision for end of learning cycle assessment.

Week 6 Revision and Assessment Week

During the first lesson of this week, students will draw on their learning over the past 5 weeks to answer the subject overarching question.

Next, students will identify areas where they need to target their revision to improve understanding, enhance their skills and ensure a complete and thorough understanding of content. Students will work, both individually and in learning teams, to complete exam questions and to create a range of revision tools which can be used both now, and when students complete their final revision before the exam in Year 11.

Gap Analysis Reinforcement

Gap As seen in the lesson activities each week, gap teaching will not just be at the end of the semester after exam analysis has Reinforcement taken place. Gap teaching is an integral part to each unit of work and will consist of summary sheets, mini-tests and tasks where gaps can be filled and REACH activities can be delivered.

Extended Learning
