BY SEAN MCINTYRE DRIFTWOOD STAFF A 14-day visit by two Cuban filmmakers is being cel- ebrated as a great leap forward in the ongoing relationship between organic farmers in the Gulf Islands and Cuba. Filmmakers Eduardo Calves and Denise Ribas Guerra have spent the past week and a half visiting organic farms and speaking with the people behind the production and marketing of organic produce for a project at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School on Galiano Island. According to Calves, who spoke through a translator dur- ing an interview at the Saturday Market in the Park in Gan- ges on the weekend, there’s a whole lot more in common between the two regions than one might expect. “Though Cuba is tropical and the Gulf Islands are more temperate, the challenges farmers face are similar,” he said. “I am here to see the organic farming practices that are on the Gulf Islands. “In both places, there is a growing interest to produce food without any chemicals and in a sustainable manner. Farmers are producing with a consciousness and they’re producing without chemicals because that is important to them.” Calves is hard at work alongside students from as far away as Alaska and Ontario to complete a documentary about organic farming practices on the Gulf Islands.
