NACSA 2015 Annual Conference in Chicago Emily Hannum

We had a very successful annual conference in Chicago in August 2015. The conference program featured 48 authors, chairs and discussants participating in eight concurrent sessions and a plenary session. Concurrent sessions were convened on a diverse set of topics: physical and mental health; rural- urban migration; gender, work and family; comparative and cross-border studies of education and health; survival strategies: Chinese NGOs in the era of Xi Jinping; sexuality, love and marriage; education and inequality; and institutions and institutional change. A stimulating plenary session on domestic and global migration featured Wei-jun Jean Yeung and Zheng Mu’s recent work on transitions to adulthood among female domestic migrants and Min Zhou’s work on highly-skilled Chinese immigrants to the United States and Singapore. A lively discussion followed. About 35 members joined a post-meeting dinner at Minghin Cuisine.

NACSA 2015 Annual Conference: Student Paper Award

The co-winners of the Student Paper Award were Bin Lian (Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) for her paper “Women’s Post-Marital Employment in China: Motherhood in an Era of Economic Reform” and Natalie Young (Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania) for her paper “Departing from the Beaten Path: International Schools in China as Response to Barriers, Stress and Risk in the Chinese Educational System”. Aims and Scope

Social work as an academic discipline was re-reintroduced to universities on the Chinese Mainland in the 1980s. The number of universities offering social work programs has increased dramatically in the past two decades. Social services provided by government organizations and NGOs have also proliferated as a response to rising social problems and needs. China Journal of Social Work endeavours to provide a platform for scholars within and outside of the Chinese Mainland to share research, teaching and practice experiences and to facilitate critical dialogue between Chinese social workers and their international peers.
