12 13 english BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)

Tolstoy. Twain. And learning how words build worlds.

14 BA

Literature connects us. Whether through a play by Shakespeare, a poem by Newfoundland writer Al Pittman or a novel by Margaret Atwood, people from different backgrounds and eras find common ground in their love of literature.

Our English program gives you the tools to engage, analyze and appreciate great works both new and old, Canadian and international.

IT’S CRITICAL

Finding new layers of meaning. Identifying patterns. Getting inside the head of an author. Understanding how politics and psychology shape a work of literature. All of these come from thinking critically and creatively – abilities we teach you from day one.

IT’S CULTURAL

You’ll explore other cultures through literature, and be part of one here in Newfoundland. The internationally renowned March Hare literary festival, held each year in Corner Brook, brings together a vibrant community of artists, poets, musicians and writers. You can also publish in Paper Mill Press, the creative writing society’s journal.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

You’ll study classic writers and graphic novels, children’s literature and modern poets. You’ll sharpen your writing skills and critical faculties. You’ll pick an area of concentration in modern literature, dramatic literature, Canadian literature, or take a combination of all three. You’ll be ready to pursue careers and further studies in journalism, public relations, advertising, education and tourism promotion, and English is a favoured first degree for many careers, such as law and medicine.

15 Environmental studies BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)

Hiking boots. Field work. Plus, you know – saving the world.

16 BA

The planet needs champions. It needs passionate, informed advocates. It needs leaders who can balance the needs of industries with those of conservationists and the public.

In other words, it needs environmental studies students. Our program will equip you to steward the planet using a strong grounding in ethics, economics and environment.

IT’S URGENT

Our relationship with the planet needs to change. If we continue to use our resources as we have, we’ll soon be without them. Finding a way forward takes deep understanding and bold creativity, so we’re nurturing those talents in our students – the next policy makers, resource managers, activists, adventure tourism operators and journalists.

IT’S OUTDOORS

You’ll take courses in outdoor environmental pursuits, environmental ethics, expeditions and environmental impact assessments. They’ll take you outdoors into the rivers, mountains and bays that make the area surrounding Grenfell Campus so breathtaking.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

You’ll kayak, ski and go orienteering. You’ll have the chance to help out with Grenfell’s industrial-scale composter or our community garden. And most importantly, you’ll be ready to begin a career that respects and champions our precious, fragile planet.

17 historical studies BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)

War. Peace. And learning how one leads to the other.

18 BA

Why are wars fought over religion, politics and trade? What brings about key diplomatic decisions and international treaties? What was it like when European powers first encountered native peoples?

History is more than dusty facts. It’s the living, breathing story of humankind – of processes and societies, philosophies and conflicts. By understanding history, you’ll better understand the contemporary world.

IT’S ILLUMINATING

Studying history won’t just equip you with facts and figures; it’ll give you a broader perspective on why things happened the way they did. You’ll learn to tease out the dynamics that shape each event, society and era. It’s an approach that not only teaches – it illuminates.

IT’S CHALLENGING

Understanding the past requires deep research and constant critical engagement. Toward the end of your degree you’ll be fully equipped to tackle courses with self- directed research components, something normally reserved for honours programs.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

You’ll probe for the truth and find new perspectives. You’ll develop skills in critical thinking and analysis, the ability to interpret information, defend an argument, and exercise judgment. You’ll have access to thousands of journals, books and databases through our vast library holdings, including our rare book collection. You might even be hired as a research assistant full time during the summer or part time through the year.

Theatre turns hard work into bold, powerful expression. Our well-rounded program is building the next generation of theatre professionals: boundless actors and skillful technicians who bring the stage to life.

Our master’s of environmental policy program prepares you to be a bridge that connects problems with solutions, people with purposes and our present with the future.

IT’S UNIFYING Our program brings together Grenfell’s strengths in environmental studies, environmental science and sustainable resource management. By integrating these diverse fields of study, we’re training policy leaders to make a difference provincially, nationally and internationally.

IT’S RIGOROUS Designing an environmentally healthy future requires sound thinking in fields as diverse as public policy, political science, geography, economics, biology and forestry. Our expert faculty, excellent library resources and hands-on orientation will deepen your understanding of environmental issues and broaden your set of tools.

WHAT YOU’LL GET You’ll get to choose between a thesis-based program, which takes two years, and a research paper-based program, which takes one. Both options will place you in an internship that exposes you to the challenges of real-world practitioners in a government office, non-governmental organization, community organization or business.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED Admission is limited and competitive. To be considered for admission, applicants should have an undergraduate degree. In special cases applicants without an undergraduate degree may be considered for admission based on professional experience. Applicants will be assessed for admission to the MA in environmental policy based on their interests, their potential to produce meaningful research and the availability of supervisors in the area of the applicant’s interest. Deadline: Feb. 15 for fall semester, Aug. 15 for winter semester. www.grenfell.mun.ca/maep
