Old Club – General WebNotes 2004 No 1 (January 21) www.oldgeelong.com.au

AROUND THE CLUB

Start of Training Pre-Season will officially commence on Wednesday 4 February 2004 at 6.30pm and will then continue each Monday and Wednesday thereafter until the end of March. From the start of April it will then revert to Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

(In the meantime Reserves Coach Benn Dunn will be operating optional Wednesday night runs around Albert Park Lake for the rest of January. Please meet at the Powerhouse Boat Shed, opposite the Keg Restaurant at 6.30pm if you would like to participate.)

Unfortunately we do not gain the use of Como Park until the beginning of April, which means training will have to be conducted elsewhere during February and March. At this stage we are considering the use of some of the area at Fawkner Park, Commercial Road, Prahran, but it may be that we will have some use of the Menzies Reserve, Elizabeth Street, Malvern. It is hoped that fuller details can be provided in next week’s notes.

Senior Coach Michael Lockman and Ben have discussed this year’s Pre-Season and the emphasis is going to be focused on Strength, Speed, Stamina and Skills. It will be challenging and will test you mentally as well as physically. It is expected that you will be training in your own time as well, and a reasonable fitness level will be required!!

Practice Matches We are planning for two Practice Matches as well as an intra-club match during March, and priority will be given to those who have attended the Pre-Season program. Arrangements for the practice matches so far are as follows: The first is Saturday 20th March - a one-game, six-quarter affair vs Geelong Amateurs (arranged through Bruce Harwood). Locky definitely wants it at Geelong and to make a day/evening of it. Venue yet to be determined.

Game 2 is against Yarra Valley O.B. on either March 27 or 28. Two full games, venue to be determined. Most likely at Yarra Valley, but nothing definite as to the ground.

A final practice match for the weekend of 3rd/4th April is yet to be arranged, but details will be supplied as soon as they are available. (Poses the question as to whether, with the later start to the season, there can be a practice match at Como Park on 3 April. If so it would be the first time in many years that the Club has been able to hold a practice match there. - Ed)

The draw for Firsts and Reserves for 2004 is out. It is as follows: April 17 Swinburne University - away April 24 Williamstown - Como May 1 Ivanhoe Assumption - away May 8 Bentleigh - Como May 15 La Trobe Uni - away May 22 Old Carey - away May 29 Bulleen Templestowe - Como June 5 West Brunswick - away June 12 No matches June 19 Monash Gryphons - Como June 26 Swinburne Uni - Como July 3 Williamstown - away July 10 Ivanhoe Assumption - Como July 17 Bentleigh - away July 24 La Trobe Uni - Como 1 July 31 Old Carey - Como August 7 Bulleen Templestowe - away August 14 West Brunswick - Como August 21 Monash Gryphons - away

Finals will be on Aug 28/29, Sep 4 and Sep 11

Locations of Away grounds will be published in due course and a full copy of the draw posted or handed to members prior to the start of the season.

======The Club passes on its deepest commiserations and condolences to Reserves player Mick Verge whose Dad was killed in a vehicle accident just after the New Year. ======

50 YEARS Two major functions are planned to mark the fact that the Club commenced operations back in 1954. The first will occur on Saturday 24 April and will take place during the day at Como Park. The second will be a dinner to be held on the evening of either Saturday 31 July (the more likely), or 24 July. It is hoped to have greater detail and information about these in subsequent editions, starting next week

We needed recently to put together some information containing a brief history of the Club for an author who is collating some details about Clubs in the VAFA. Part of our response to a of underlined questions contained the following information, which may or may not be of interest to our current membership:

Number of Club members: - approx 100 playing, 450 non-playing (or should that read non-paying? – Ed)

Brief history: First game was played in 1954 in E Section of VAFA as the Old Geelong Grammarians Football Club; Reserves started in 1963; name of Club changed to Old Geelong in 1974 to reflect changing membership and recruiting base.

Grounds: 1954 - Fairfield Park 1955-7 - St Kevins School, Heyington 1958 - an oval in Burnley 1959 - Como Park, South Yarra, which the Club has used ever since. The Reserves when founded used Righetti Oval, Kooyong, until about 1978 when, after a merger of the Prahran Baseball Club with the Moorabbin Baseball Club, the Reserves were able to transfer to Como Park as well.”

Meals on Thursday Nights After training during the season (from the start of April). We’re pleased to report that LoAn is happy to do the Thursday night meals again. We also understand from Michael Davis that he is arranging a new pie warmer, which includes a sponsorship deal worth around $2000 for the Club - finally a sponsorship that works! (Mind you, after the big write-up in the previous Webnotes for Davo’s new pie shop in the city, we are wondering a bit: readers are referred to the report in the “From Here and There” section later in these Webnotes.)

Club Data Base We recently sent out an Excel document to members of the Committee and a few additional - about 18 all up - showing the current Club Data base (players, pivot, sponsors, Schools officials etc). At the same time we asked those people to go through that document and to come back to us with any suggested alterations, amendments and info to fill in gaps. So far there have been five people responding, which is better than nothing. Just. Although it is doubtless highly unlikely, if anyone else reading these notes would like a copy of that document for the same purpose, please let us know. (Email [email protected])

Social The Social Committee is already at work and the details and dates of the first functions and season launch should appear in these notes early February. In addition to some of the “usuals”, there is talk about a golf day mid-season, which sounds like a great idea.

FROM HERE AND THERE Big write-up in last edition for Michael Davis’ new pie shop in the city was totally in vain (you could say a pie in the sky), because the opening of the shop continues to be delayed. Report in, from one of our very few correspondents, reads “Davo's pie shop must be running extremely well as a few of us OGS crew went to go and check it out in its opening week and it was nowhere to be seen! It looked like a bomb-blast site with concrete everywhere and the site was clearly still in construction mode. We now eagerly look forward to the real opening, whenever that may be.” Sorry about that, dear readers: we’ll put in a brief note when it is up and running (after first fully checking that it is up and running) – Ed.

Same correspondent has noted: “Tim Bayles and his wife Kirsty are expecting a newborn child in July this year. Both appear to be rapt with the news and the only hope is that the poor thing isn't as ugly as it's uncle-to-be, Edward!” (Looks as if the Club might need to have a stand-by assistant for the line marking in July – Ed.)

3 After the photographic excesses of 2003, we will be asking Vicko to contribute $5 to a charity of his choice every time his picture appears in the Webnotes in 2004. So here’s the first, contributed by Andrew Mottram, from the airstrip at Shyangboche in Nepal last November. In the thinner air at 12,204 feet Vicko reckoned he could comfortably bomb a goal from 80 metres out. (In case you missed them, there are other photos from the same trip on the previous set of webnotes.)

(Andrew Mottram last week departed for an indefinite stay in the UK, muttering something about returning to his chosen game, soccer, and also something in the same breath about Manchester United. – Ed.)

On the subject of correspondents and contributors to this publication, and also the database mentioned earlier, we note that there are 547 names currently on the Club’s database, and that for this edition of the Webnotes a grand total of four people helped by submitting news and information.

VAFA Matters (from the VAFA Website) Recognition of Noel Rundle’s contribution to Amateur football “Many suggestions have been made and although appreciative of the many fine thoughts we have decided to concentrate on two in the short term. Richard Evans is driving a project which may result in the front gates (at Elsternwick Park) being named the "Noel Rundle Gates." We intend to establish a "Noel Rundle Foundation." The uses that the money raised would be put are still to be determined, but they would fit in with the many ideals that Noel held as important in aspiring sportspeople. The Trustees of this Foundation have been short-listed and very soon approaches will be made to companies, ex players and the like, with a view of collecting funds (to be tax deductible).”

OGS Games played to end 2003 The following list now includes matches played last year in the Club 18 (excepting Mazenod away and Whitefriars at Como due to the fact that duplicate team-sheets for those matches are still missing). It also includes Reserves finals games. Any complaints or queries, please email [email protected]
