Hugh D2 SECTION Lyon by Jono Healy KNITWEAR

It was a tremendous game last Sunday, and Peninsula frills, wears long sleeves, certainly bounced back from their disappointing loss to runs hard at the ball. A Oakleigh the previous week. It was extremely tight early, genuine old fashioned before the Pirates started to get on top during the second back pocket plumber. The quarter. Three quick goals to Aquinas late in the third term, drive he provides out of gave them a huge chance going into the last but the Pirates defence is excellent, and he teams well with Bando on the prevailed. Greg Evans did a great job on Shaun Payze, last line of defence. Holden will give you another good whilst Leigh Toomey and Glen Whitehead found plenty of game today. The gamebreakers for the Krushers have to the ball. For Peninsula, Tom Coghlan had an excellent be Bromley, David Counihan and McKenzie. Now Doug match, along with Cade Bannister and Andrew Murphy. McKenzie has kicked 60 goals so far this season, but only managed one major in the second semi final. Will today be Oakleigh AFC $1.72 v Peninsula OB $2.05 his day? Can he turn it on? The Krushers will certainly Most Goals Most Disposals hope so. S. Payze (Peninsula) $2.75 J. Rutter (Oakleigh) $3.25 T. Bromley (Oakleigh) $4.75 R. Powney (Peninsula) $4.50 Well, who is going to win? D. McKenzie (Oakleigh) $5 C. Bannister (Peninsula) $5 On initial inspection, everything points to an Oakleigh J. Coghlan (Peninsula) $6.50 P. Holden (Oakleigh) $7.50 victory. They outclassed Peninsula in the second semi and S. Briggs (Oakleigh) $8 S. Kitts (Oakleigh) $8 have had the week off to rest some tired bodies. Yet, the M. Glenn (Peninsula) $9 T. Madder (Peninsula) $9 Pirates have only lost three times this season, and rest A. Kitts (Oakleigh) $12 J. Reynolds (Oakleigh) $12 assured they will be more competitive today than they were N. Claringbold (Peninsula) $16 J. Davis (Peninsula) $16 two weeks ago. As is the case in all football, whichever team wins the ball out of the middle will win the match. I Previous encounters in 2006: think Oakleigh have an edge in this department. Rutter and Round 8 at Oakleigh: Peninsula 14.13.97 def Oakleigh Counihan were too quick for Peninsula last time they met 9.14.68 and I believe they will be once again today. I expect Simon Bando to once again get the Payze, Shaun* PENINSULA OB 2 80 job on Shaun Payze. Payze has been kept relatively quite in Garrard, Johnathon IVANHOE ASS’N AFC 0 63 the past two weeks, and if he has a big game today then the MacKenzie, Douglas* OAKLEIGH AFC 0 60 Pirates are a huge chance. He has been in reasonable form the past few Lee, Daniel WERRIBEE AFC 0 45 weeks and if he can get amongst the goals this will take Ryan, John ST JOHNS OC 0 45 some pressure off Payze and the Coghlan’s. I can’t see Wheeler, Timothy WILLIAMSTOWN CYMS 0 45 Payze kicking a bag though. So their score will need to D2 RESERVE come from another avenue. SUPPORTS THE VAFA AFCA/VAFA COACH OF THE YEAR

SENIOR COACH OF THE MONTH - AUGUST Michael Glassborrow – Aquinas OC Michael comes from a football loving family with a long history of involvement with the Coldstream FC. Michael was appointed Senior Coach of Aquinas in 2006 after being Assistant Coach at Coldstream for the previous 2 years. Michael had played senior football at Coldstream for 7 years, including 3 Grand Final appearances and 1 win. A skilful left foot half-backer, Michael has bought a wealth of experience to the Aquinas line-up as well as developing strong relationships with the entire playing list, not just the seniors. Michael’s contribution at all levels has been a big factor in all 3 teams at Aquinas reaching the finals for the first time in the clubs history. Michael has been reappointed for 2007 and we wish him continued success next season.

U19 COACH OF THE MONTH – AUGUST Theo Vlahos – Old Xaverians (1) Theo has had such a rich and varied sporting career that his coaching success at Old Xaverians Under 19’s was nearly guaranteed. After completing school at Xavier, Theo went on and played with the Old Xaverians for three years. After suffering from injuries he decided to move to East Camberwell in the Suburban Churches Association where he played for the next eight years. In the meantime he spent his summers playing cricket, firstly with Kew in the subbies where he played as a batsman in the First XI and then to Koonung Heights where he was selected in their Team of the Century. As a teacher at Burke Hall, Xavier’s Junior School, Theo has coached thousands of boys in all sports. Theo’s strength is his ability to relate to all people and his deep understanding of both school and club sport has made him a popular figure this season.

Aquinas forwards, Naulty and sad to have a loser, and unfortunately for Old Raguaskas were well held as backs Steve Millar and Haileybury it was to be them. Old Mentonians held Chance Burridge not only beat their opponents, but on for a fantastic four point win to head to the Grand ran off and created. Two 3rd quarter goals summed Final with Kyle Goulding awesome for the winners up the match for me as firstly, goal sneak Anthony and Dodd, Prowse and Norton all finishing with three Poci dobbed a beauty from the boundry followed by goals apiece. a running Matz bomb 50 out, they could do nothing wrong. Aquinas’ only two goals came in the second Grand Final Preview and their result was made worse when CHF Scott To play at Sportscover Arena at this time of year is Kenner went off injured. The Bullants finished 12 often for the best teams in the VAFA and so we have goal winners, the perfect preparation for a Grand the two best Section Blue teams fighting it out under Final. lights on Friday night. After all we have been through we are down to two as Mazenod and Old Mentonians Fitzroy vs Bulleen Templestowe (2-0) Preston City face off for premiership glory starting at 7.00PM at Oval, 17th September, 11.20am the home of VAFA football. Many pundits including All has lead us to 2 hours of hard footy with either myself didn’t think Old Mentonians would get this far side with nothing to lose. The Bullants have turned it after their start to the season, but they rocketed on for Finals. They are playing as a unit, unselfish home at the business end and now seem ready to and hard. The Reds have the list and some huge take on the might of Mazenod. Their early meeting bodies, able to change games. The Bullant backline this season saw Mazenod have a day out at home will have headaches, but have shown true strength, winning by 120 points with Klavins kicking 7 goals. matching it with the best. The middle knows how to But as the season wore on Old Mentonians just kept get the footy; with Matz, Rametta, Morabito and Dave getting better and it showed in their return bout Voglis all competent but will need to run harder when they defeated Mazenod at Mentone Grammar against the likes of Fitzroy’s Kiel Donato and by 6 points, with Dodd booting 4 goals and Prowse Olarenshaw and Dawson-Smith. Chris Ligris, Biggs and Mitchell best afield. Both Jesse Prowse and and Beech will be dangerous, all able to kick goals, Lewis Mitchell have been awesome all year for Old while the Reds back half have been an impenetrable Mentonians, with Prowse finishing 5th in the league force all year. But finals can stun a few sides, making B&F. Their courageous skipper Jacob Moon also had it a battle of wits, not necessarily skill, For example, a stellar season finishing 4th in the league B&F, with Aquinas almost came back and pinched it off Fitzroy these two players forming the nucleus of the team. two weeks ago, now they’re out. Don’t be surprised Mazenod also have plenty of skillful players including if the Bullants rattle a few feathers, but on paper, I goal kicking machine Nicolas Bogar who has booted can’t go past Fitzroy as premiers; they are tried and 73 goals for the season, as well as great players true. including Peter Stanley, Cameron Smith and Adam [email protected] Weekes.
