Page 2 of 44 An extract from the History Archives... The founder of TESCO at Goldhanger

In the early 1940s Jack Cohen, founder of the TESCO supermarket chain, purchased Little London Farm as a second home and to acquired the fruit tree orchard then part of the farm. Little London Farm is said to be named after a John de London in 1400s, and was, and still is in Goldhanger Parish. Because of difficulties importing fruit at that time Cohen knew that locally grown fruit was scarce and in great demand. In the following years he purchased several other local farms that had established orchards. One of those was Hill Farm in the centre of . He developed the farmyard into the company’s, and the UK’s first “own label” canning factory. He chose to call the factory “Goldhanger Fruit Farms”. The early history of TESCO and Jack Cohen’s (later Sir Jack Cohen) major involvement has been well documented, including his authorised biography “Pile it High, Sell it Cheap”. The biography has a complete chapter entitled “Goldhanger” and records the purchases of the farms and the development of the factory. The biography tells us the person who introduced him to Little London Farm was a local man by the name of “Major Frost”. One can only speculate who that might have been.Throughout the chapter the word “Goldhanger” is used to refer to his home, farms, orchards and the factory, which was clearly the name he preferred to use when in London and on business. The family kept a pony and trap at the farm which they used to travel to and to collect guests from local rail stations. These photos are from the 1950s. TESCO sold the factory in the 1960s, it changed ownership several times, but the name remaining until the 1970s. Those living here then will remember the many lorries that cruised around our village looking for the factory. Fortunately it was later named Beckingham Business Park.

Page 3 of 44 Page 4 of 44 Incredible String Band Man Returns to Goldhanger Robin & Bina Williamson – Goldhanger Village Hall 7.30pm, Friday, October 9

ROBIN WILLIAMSON is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist musician, singer, songwriter and storyteller, who first made his name as a founding member of The Incredible String Band. Between 1966 and 1974 the Incredible String Band, based around the duo of Williamson and Mike Heron, released some 13 albums, becoming one of the best-loved and influential groups of the era. Paul McCartney declared their Grammy award winning ‘The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter’ to be his favorite album of 1967 (the year of Sgt.Pepper) and their concert appearances were attended by such diverse supporters as Mick Jagger, Billy Connolly, Robert Plant, John Lennon and Rowan Williams the future Archbishop of Canterbury! The Incredible String Band also appeared at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969. The 1980’s saw Robin constantly touring the world as a solo artist, his recordings highly praised and his songs covered by many other artists including Van Morrison. He has also been a key figure at the forefront of the storytelling revival in Europe and America since the 80's. He has authored a number of books including The Craneskin Bag (re-telling and re-versifications of Celtic lore) and Celtic Bards, Celtic Druids (co-authored with R.J. Stewart). Robin is Honorary Chief Bard of The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. He met Bina in the 1980’s and by the end of that decade they were married with old friend Donovan performing at their wedding. East-African born British Asian BINA WILLIAMSON has been performing and recording for a number of years, touring with Robin not only as a duo, but also with the Just Like Ivy Band. Bina has a voice of resonance, innocence and warmth, drawing on a variety of Indian styles as well as the Celtic heritage and British folk traditions. In 1997 The Incredible String Band reformed and Bina was recruited into the group for a series of triumphant concerts captured in the BBC documentary ‘Re-tying The Knot’. Inevitably perhaps Robin soon left the Incredibles for a second time and continued to work both as a solo artist and increasingly with Bina. Their performance in June 2005 at the Royal Festival Hall London Meltdown US-UK Connections was described in the Guardian as “a highlight of the Festival”.

Page 5 of 44 Back in 2013, at the invitation of local musician Colin Lloyd Tucker, Robin and Bina performed at the village hall and gave an intimate, entertaining and at times, moving performance fondly remembered by those who were present (a full house) and they are back this year. On the evening of October 9th ROBIN and BINA WILLIAMSON will present ‘an evening of songs, stories and music’ at THE GOLDHANGER VILLAGE HALL. Tickets are £15 and can be obtained by calling Colin, Yvonne or Maya; 01621 788254 Or email; [email protected] Please bring any refreshments you like, glasses, cork-screws etc will be provided.

"If I go back to the start, I'd have to say again that it was simply a discovery of poetry; and as such--risking the embarrassment that so regularly goes with my particular vocation I'd also have to say that it was the discovery of the holy; not the solemn, not the saintly, but the holy, which makes you silent and sometimes makes you laugh and which above all makes the landscape different once and for all. …Superb" Rowan Williams

Page 14 of 44 GOLDHANGER W.I. Our next meeting will be held in Goldhanger Village Hall on September 2nd at 7.30 p.m. and it will be our very popular Beetle Drive. Fish and Chips for members and guests are all ordered and we can all bring along our drinks and glasses, with some cutlery, ready to roll. Be prepared for some tough competition from the chaps! The talk by Jean Smye at our August meeting was very well attended and proved to be absolutely fascinating. She shared her extensive knowledge of bee-keeping with dry humour and prompted lots of questions afterwards. Her description of swarms of drones, lingering on street corners, waiting to pay court to any passing virgin female bees made us laugh. Jean sold a lot of her delicious honey on the evening and was insistent upon foregoing her fee. We have decided, therefore, to donate it to charity. Boards were circulated asking for members to help out with the refreshments at the Art Show during Gala Weekend in September and cake-makers volunteered to bake . Joyce will be contacting us all to confirm our time-slots and cakes required. Due to the generosity of our members, who bake the refreshments and give of their time, we are able to be such a vibrant W.I. with lots of activities going on. We welcomed a new member, Nicole, who learned about us from our web-site. Thanks to Rachel, who manages it so well, it is proving to be a very popular way of checking up on all that is happening in W.I. It is also a delight to see the lovely photos posted there of everyone enjoying themselves. The ‘flower of the month’ was Pat’s campanula with Sandra’s phlox coming second. Congratulations to you both. Photos were taken by Julie and Heather of a large group of us enjoying our Annual Lunch at Forester Park Golf Club on August 10th. Both the weather and the food were lovely and everyone caught up with news from each other over drinks before we sat down for the jacket potatoes with various fillings and salads. Many thanks to Pam and Kate who organised everything so efficiently. Information is up-dated each month on the website. Go to www.goldhangerwi.co.uk. New members are still welcome to join. Page 18 of 44 Honouring those killed in the Great War recorded on our memorial. This is being done by raising the Union Flag on the Church on the 100th anniversary of their death and ringing the bells for a short time during that day. This was carried out on 17th August for Harry Johnson. The Parish magazine for October 1915 records: In Memoriam HARRY JAMES JOHNSON The terrible news of the early death of dear Harry was a great shock to us all. It is a noble death for a lad to die - no end can be more glorious than dying for one's country in a righteous cause - but then, he was so young. He died at Alexandria, on August 17th, in hospital, from wounds received on August 9th, and on August 21st fell his birthday, when he would have been19 years of age! Such a child - simple kind hearted, and generous of nature. At his memorial service held in the church on Sunday afternoon 6th of September, fully 60 were present, including the members of his sorrowing family, for whom such deep sympathy is felt, as well as a genuine sorrow for the promising young life thus suddenly cut short. Just before his death he wrote the following letter to the Rector, which in obedience to his wish, is printed below.

21/5 Batt. Essex Reg. 161 Brigade, 54 Division Med. Exp. Force Egypt. Dear Sir Just a line hoping to find you in the best of health, as it leaves me the same at present. Dear Sir, I have to thank you for saving my life, and I suppose it will surprise you when I tell you it was the Bible you gave me that saved my life and I do not hardly know how to thank you and I shall never forget your kindness in giving me such a very valuable present. So must close this time with very best wishes for a happy life. I remain, Your obedient servant Harry Johnson P.S. Dear Sir. You are at liberty to put this in the magazines so as the people of Goldhanger can see it and be very proud of your good deed.

Many of us will pray that his soul may be granted eternal rest and Perfect Peace Rev. F. Gardiner

1829. Private 5th Battalion Essex Regiment. Died 17th August 1915. Aged 18. Son of Samuel James and Ellen Johnson of 2 Church Street, Goldhanger. Unknown grave . Commemorated on the Helles Memorial (on the tip of the Gallipoli peninsular) Article by Barry Unger.

Page 19 of 44 GOLDHANGER PARISH COUNCIL Report on the Meeting held on 11th August 2015

Bree Back has been co-opted onto the Council to bring its full complement up to seven Members. Pole bridge footpath: Despite two reminders there has been no response from Mr Taylor regarding the reinstatement of the footpath. New anti dog fouling notices have been obtained and will be put up in various locations in the village. Councillor Cheeseman reported that all the allotments have now been taken.

Planning There were no new applications, but Councillors noted the following decision by the Planning Inspectorate: FUL/MAL/14/00916 – Land adjacent Longwick Farm Joyces Chase Tolleshunt Major – proposed bag tank/bladder storage with bunding – Appeal for costs dismissed. Naming of the development at the corner of Church Street and Maldon Road. The Parish Council has suggested that this should be called Benham Close, to commemorate the author of the history book ‘Goldhanger: An Estuary Village’. Councillors noted that Council is now able to demonstrate a five year land supply for housing. Concern was expressed that this was not done before during the examination of the Local Development Plan which was rejected by the Planning Inspector.

Highways There is still no update from the Highways Panel on the proposed chicanes in Maldon Road, work on the Charity Farm bends and the 20mph speed limit in Fish Street. Councillor Mr Sargeant will continue to pursue this matter. There have recently been incidents of residents being unable to access their properties due to inconsiderate parking in the village. It is suggested that these matters are reported to the local police, Essex County Council Highways and Councillor Rodney Bass (Essex County Council). As the authorities have indicated that they will not provide funding for extending the yellow parking lines in the village, the Local Highways Panel will be asked if this can be added to its schemes for future funding. Essex County Council has provided a brief report on drainage issues in the village and this will be pursued further.

Marigold Wood. The Parish Council will send off an expression of interest in obtaining funding from the Essex County Council Community Initiatives Fund for work to create a woodland path. Further sources of funding will also be explored.

The telephone box in the Square has now been repainted and BT will be asked to repair the glazing which is in poor repair.

… continued

Page 20 of 44 Further information has been obtained about providing a defibrillator for the village. Its purchase will be reconsidered when more details are available about costs, maintenance etc. It was noted that the police have recently been using a speed gun in Maldon Road. The hedges at the top of Church Street near its junction with Maldon Road are overgrown and need cutting back. This will be reported to Highways. Draft minutes of Parish Council meetings will in future be published on the Parish Council web site (essexinfo.net/goldhanger-parish-council). Minutes are approved at the following meeting of the Council.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on 8th September 2015 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Members of the public and press are welcome to attend and the agenda will be published on the Parish Council web site

We raised £310-00 for the Havens Hospices altogether, with the potential for a further £60-00 being claimable by the charity by means of tax relief on our sponsorship. This underlines the importance of ticking the box, if applicable, for tax relief when we make a donation to any charity. Thanks again,

Page 23 of 44 Goldhanger Sailing Club News On a very sad note, the Goldhanger Sailing Club has to say goodbye to a long standing member of the club. Ron Cook sadly passed away recently. He was a former Commodore. Our condolences to his wife Pam and his family. Ron the sailor and friend will be sadly missed. It has been a very busy time at the club this month. Our annual Sea Sunday service was held on a beautiful morning in the club compound. It was attended by over 50 parishioners from Goldhanger, Little Totham and Great Totham. Our thanks to Ann Jordan who did the flowers for the club and the altar table. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the club were as popular as ever. The RNLI manned a stall selling Christmas cards, calendars and souvenirs and were very pleased with the £166.60 made for RNLI funds. The following weekend was an early start for the breakfast race. The sailors have to be keen to be ready for the 6.45am start, but the promise of a full English breakfast afterwards is a good incentive. 24 breakfasts were served and black pudding proved to be very popular! The Family Sail and Sleepover was a first for us and those who attended had fantastic fun. It was unfortunate that many families were away on their summer breaks, so next year we will be sure to have it before the schools break up. It was the most beautiful day for beginners to sail and dinghies, canoes, rowing boats and windsurfers were all towed by the rescue boats round to the spit so the children could safely practise in the lagoon.

Page 24 of 44 Even the adults had a little go (with the wind surfing proving to have most “fall in factor” as you would expect). As the tide fell, everyone had a picnic on the sea wall and the tiny bit of beach left by the very high tide. Everyone was then towed, rowed or sailed back to the club where the afternoon of fun and games, supervised by Kay began (soon to be called “noisy Kay” by the children). The dads cooked the BBQ and after supper things began to quieten down with stories, a camp-fire and songs and then bedtime. A wonderful and very full day. Tents were packed after breakfast and there was a prize giving before home time. Congratulations to Grayson and Beatrice who won special prizes for trying every available craft and showing amazing independence for their ages, 4 and 5 respectively. The weather was again perfect for our sail to Brightlingsea. Leaving Goldhanger on the ebb tide we arrived in time for lunch (at the pub) and ice creams before setting off home and arriving just before high water. Carolyn, Helen, Kevin and Natcho the dog, all enjoyed their first long sail on the Blackwater. Finally the sailing club would like to wish a very Happy 90th Birthday to Gwenda who kindly donated the optimist sailing dingy the children enjoy so much. We hope you had a very special day.

News from the Village Hall A very big thank you to all those who completed and returned the questionnaire published in the Parish Mag. We are now analysing the results and bringing together the many very helpful comments that were made. We intend to publish a summary of the results just as soon as we can. Several people kindly offered assistance but did not put a contact name – we would be very pleased if you would email our secretary, Catherine Brown [email protected] or telephone her on 788488 with your details.

Page 25 of 44 Wildwatching News Noisy Swifts flying around in the evenings, Large White Butterflies gracing Little Totham churchyard at the children’s Holiday Club, Swallows nesting in the top of the porch at Great Totham Church – this is summer! It’s end of July/beginning of August at the time of writing. The Swallows have had two broods to date. Youngsters from the first brood have helped the adults feed the second, which accounts for a lot of birds coming and going all the time. This is normal behaviour for Swallows. July Second Thursdays was spent at the Essex Wildlife Trust Chigborough reserve. There were still Grey Herons and Little Egrets to be seen in and around the Heronry, which is the dense waterside bushes and undergrowth in which they nest. Warblers were heard rather than seen, especially Blackcaps which seem to be very numerous at present. Many small bird species keep a low profile during late summer, while they are still feeding youngsters. The Mallard Drakes at Chigborough were looking very drab, in what is called eclipse plumage – they undergo a post-breeding moult of their flight feathers, and because they can’t fly, they lose their bright colouration, particularly the glossy bottle green head plumage, so as not to be conspicuous to preditors. The drakes look very similar to the ducks in eclipse plumage - only the bright yellow bill remains to distinguish them from the females, which have a dull, brown bill. Many of the duck species go through the eclipse process The gravel pit at Russel Green, the other side of Hatfield Peverel, is on the way to a number of places, and has a convenient roadside pull-in. Three Green Sandpipers, probably juveniles, were present recently, on migration. Their nesting range includes much of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The adult females migrate first, followed by the adult males – they raise the young to the stage at which they can live independently, and then leave them to it! We can only stand in awe of the young birds, perhaps three months old, which know to migrate and where to go without the guidance of adults. Also at Russel Green lately was a lone Dunlin, still in almost full breeding plumage. Dunlin are the most common wader on the estuary in winter, where they are often seen in very energetic flight as a “Cloud” of tiny waders. The one at R.G. was large for a Dunlin, long-billed, and had a very smart, attractive appearance. This marked it out as a subspecies Alpina bird, (Pictured) which will have nested in Scandinavia, probably north of the Arctic circle. Juvenile Polecats disperse at this time of year, which makes sightings of them more likely. They are often seen as roadkills, but Nina picked up a live one in car headlights in Wickam Bishops at about 10.30 one evening, and we both saw one near to Bobbets Hole at an earlier time of day, about 6.45pm. The latter was an all-dark animal, and so was presumably a Polecat/Ferret cross.

Second Thursdays – Thursday 10th September, 2.00pm. Meet at Goldhanger Church as usual, and we’ll decide where to go then. All welcome.

Page 26 of 44 Recipe of the moth

Parmesan Biscuits • 3oz Parmesan, finely grated

Heat your grill to high. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and divide the grated Parmesan into six long strips. Grill for one minute until the cheese has melted and is lightly golden. Whilst still warm and a bit flexible, release the biscuits from the paper and cool until firm.

This goes very nicely with the Pea, mint and spring onion soup from last month’s magazine … which of course you still have, don’t you? ;-)

If you have a recipe you would like to share, please send it in to us.

Be careful when barbecuing of a summer’s evening. Check the wind direction so you don’t annoy the neighbours - or invite them round so they can’t complain! Page 27 of 44 Saturday 19th September 2015 Great fun for all the family – bring your children and grandchildren

The following is a 17th century prayer from Gloucestershire. The original recommendation was for it to be said twice a day: “Lord, thou knowest better than myself that I am growing older and I will soon be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details, give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains, they are of no interest to others and the love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for improved memory but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet. I don’t want to be a saint, some of them are hard to live with, but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people, and give me O Lord the grace to tell them so.” My late Grandma came across this prayer when she was in her 90’s and felt it echoed much of what she needed to say herself. She did an article on it for her own parish magazine, at Midsomer Norton in Somerset. With a few minor amendments, though, it’s surely relevant for people of almost any age. Do you see something of yourself reflected in it? I know I do!! I like the prayer because of its humour, and because it takes a degree of self awareness to say it to God and mean it. As with many prayers and hymns, I don’t agree with all of it. Aches and pains, in fact anything that makes us suffer in body, mind or spirit ought to be of interest to others. There are times when having a good moan to someone who is prepared to listen is good for us, and can in itself lead to prayer being said. I especially like the bit about seeing good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people. One of the great blessings of having been at my previous parishes for l3 ½ years is that some people who clashed with me at first turned out to be real gems as time went by. Prayer isn’t about trying to make God change his mind. It’s more about becoming ever more and more aligned to his will. If the prayer had got it completely wrong, it would perhaps have said “Lord, please make others listen to me because I know I’m right!” Contrast that with the humility of this simple and yet profound prayer as it is. It had a great deal to commend itself to us.
