Its study is known as information seeking behaviour which not only ascertained the behaviour of the users but also help in collection development and strengthening the services based on the user responses. This paper discusses the information seeking behaviour of the users comprising of the students, faculty members and the research scholars of few universities exist in Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. KEYWORDS: Information, Information seeking, University environment and Library services. INTRODUCTION Information seeking is a natural and necessary mechanism of human existence (Marchionini, 1995). It is indulged in all the people and manifested through a particular behaviour (Wimberley and Jones, 1989). It is also an aspect of scholarly interest for academic librarians who want to develop collections, services and organizational structures to facilitate information seeking. Information seeking behaviour is a broad term, which may involve a set of actions that takes individuals or groups to show their information need, seek information, check and select the information to fulfill their requirement or information needs. Information seeking behaviour according to Wilson (1999) is ‘the totality of human behaviour in relation to sources and channels of information, including both active and passive information seeking and information use”. Thus, information seeking behaviour is a process where people search for the information and utilize the same to complete their assigned task or work. Objectives of the Study Various objectives framed for present study are: 1. To ascertain the collection of various universities, exit in Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. 2. To ascertain the gender-wise use of libraries surveyed. Information Seeking Behaviour of University Library Users: A Study of Purvanchal Based Universities 3. To identify the frequency of the use of library by the faculty members, research scholars and the students. 4. To find out the purpose of visiting the libraries by users. 5. To ascertain the use of internet used by the users in surveyed libraries. 6. To know the problems faced by the users in accessing various services in the libraries. 7. To ascertain the user opinions about the improvement of library services. Area of the Research Purvanchal is a geographic region of north-central India, which comprises of the eastern end of Uttar Pradesh state. It is bounded by Nepal to the north, Indian state Bihar to the east, Bagelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh state to the south, the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh to the west and the end of Doab (at Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh to its southwest. Figure 1: Map of Purvanchal Area (Source: https://tinyurl.com/yav3e6gg) Its following universities are undertaken for the study: Allahabad University, Allahabad (AU) Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi (IIT-BHU) DeenDayal Upadhyay University, Gorakhpur (DDU) Veer Bahadur Purvanchal University, Jaunpur (VB{U) Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi (MGKP) Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi (SU) Central University of Tibetan Studies, Varanasi (CUTS) 280 Library Progress (International)/ Vol.40 No.2/ July-December 2020 Dr. Rajendra Kumar Bharti, Dr. Anil Kumar Dhiman REVIEW OF LITERATURE Amutha and Sudha (2015) have studied information seeking behaviour of tertiary level seventy-seven students of chemistry of government colleges and private colleges in Ariyalur district, using questionnaire method. The findings of the study revealed that though information and communication technologies are being put in place for the use of tertiary level students, they must possess the requisite skill to use them appropriately. Thukaram (2015) has carried out a study on the research scholars of university libraries in Hyderabad to determine their information seeking behaviour and library use using closed and open-ended questionnaires. It is found that the researchers use a variety of information sources for their research; however, the books and e-journals are consulted mostly. The findings of the study indicate that guidance in the use of library resources and services is necessary to help the researchers to meet out some of their information requirements. Dhiman and Bharti (2017) have carried out a study on the information seeking behaviour of the students and research scholars studying in Allahabad University, Allahabad using questionnaire method. It is noticed in the study that the library is the most preferred place for study for 63.34% users who daily visit the library for their study purposes, whereas subject experts and librarians are the most preferred informal information sources and 93.33% users use internet but 6.67% are not aware of the benefits of the internet. Interestingly, 7.34% users agreed that e-journals are the best source of information but majority of the users feel that electronic form in not convenient. Lastly, the need of conducting user orientation programmes to make them aware of the e-resources for better utilization of the library services was felt necessary in the study. Yadav, Dhiman and Yadav (2017) have carried out a study for information seeking behaviour of readers in selected agricultural university libraries exist in North India. The present study was conducted the on user-based evaluation and problems faced by the readers in different agricultural university libraries. It is noted that most of the readers in CCSHAU, IVRI, IARI, GBPUAT and PAU have graded their libraries very good and excellent. However, they have also floated a few suggestions to further improve the library facilities towards strengthening the library services. Vinod Kumar and Dhiman (2019) have conducted a study on the information seeking behaviour of library users in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra (J&K) using questionnaire method. The results reveal that library users use library for more than one hour per day. It is also seen that the post graduates mainly visit library for newspapers and magazine reading (77.6%), followed by studying course material (63.3%), while research scholars use library for consulting research materials (98.9%). But the faculty members use the library for collecting reference materials (88.5%) mostly. Further, the post graduates consult library mostly for newspapers (91.3%) and books (80.1%) while the research scholars consult doctoral dissertations (94.5%) and newspapers (85.7%) respectively. However, the faculty members read newspapers (88.4%) but they also consult doctoral dissertations (78.8%) in the library. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Various types of the research methodology are available (Dhiman, 2015, 2018), but for the present study, questionnaire method is used. Questionnaires were prepared for collecting data from the users comprising of students, research scholars and faculty members of the libraries to ascertain what they expect from the libraries in fulfilling their requirements; and also, whether they are satisfied or not? Further, information about various libraries was gathered from the librarians and their websites. 281 Library Progress (International)/ Vol.40 No.2/ July-December 2020 Information Seeking Behaviour of University Library Users: A Study of Purvanchal Based Universities RESULTS Table 1 that is all about the collection strength of the university libraries is based on the information received from different librarians/library incharge. Table 1 clearly shows that all of the universities have almost every types of the collection in their libraries. However, online databases are absent in IIT, BHU, DDU Gorakhpur, VBS Purvanchal and Central University of Tibetan Studies.
