Passed on through generations of martial artists, wing chun was popularized by icons like Sammo Hung and Ip’s movie-star disciple Bruce Lee—and has become an action movie mainstay. The first Chinese martial arts movie to be produced by a major Hollywood studio, Clouse’s Enter the Dragon features Bruce Lee in his final role before his untimely death (just six days before the film’s theatrical release). Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tsung-Hsin Lee, M.A. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Hannah Kosstrin, Advisor Harmony Bench Danielle Fosler-Lussier Morgan Liu Copyrighted by Tsung-Hsin Lee 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation “Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980” examines the transnational history of American modern dance between the United States and Taiwan during the Cold War era. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the Carmen De Lavallade-Alvin Ailey, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, and Alwin Nikolais dance companies toured to Taiwan under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. At the same time, Chinese American choreographers Al Chungliang Huang and Yen Lu Wong also visited Taiwan, teaching and presenting American modern dance. These visits served as diplomatic gestures between the members of the so-called Free World led by the U.S. Taiwanese audiences perceived American dance modernity through mixed interpretations under the Cold War rhetoric of freedom that the U.S. sold and disseminated through dance diplomacy. I explore the heterogeneous shaping forces from multiple engaging individuals and institutions that assemble this diplomatic history of dance, resulting in outcomes influencing dance histories of the U.S. and Taiwan for different ends. I argue that Taiwanese audiences interpreted American dance modernity as a means of embodiment to advocate for freedom and social change. -

It is this fluke of timeliness that makes First Day in October worthy of note. Matthau gives one of his standard performances as f an irascible old coot who - surprise! - has a heart of gold r under that flinty exterior. Matthau benefits from the script, as he has the better lines throughout, while Clay-burgh- 's character is too pompous to develop much sympa- thetic rapport. Although Matthau probably could have f Dii phoned in his part, it doesn't differ one iota from his other recent movies like Hopscotch and House Calls. Matthau is Justice Dan Snow, who is obviously based on the late Justice William 0. Douglas. He is a civil libertarian individualist who climbs mountains for fun. Best known for his comedic and dramatic crossover as the gruff but soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant, a role he originated on the landmark TV comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show and continued in the drama Lou Grant, for which he won 5 Emmys and three Golden Globes, he received 2 more Emmy and Golden Globes for Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. His career demonstrates a consummate ability to transcend the line between comedy and drama. CELEBRATING THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Allentown Symphony Orchestra joins with pianist Simon Mulligan and local dancers for Gershwin, Copland program Steve Siegel Special to The Morning Call It’s quite possible that no music evokes the American landscape as strongly as that of George Gershwin and Aaron Copland. Each paints with a broad brush — Copland’s widely spaced chords and vigorous rhythms conspire to create a sound as vividly American as Gershwin’s streetwise use of syncopation and jazz riffs. The Allentown Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to both home-grown composers Feb. 9 and 10 at Miller Symphony Hall. Pianist Simon Mulligan is soloist in Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm Variations” and “Rhapsody in Blue” in a program that also features Gershwin’s colorful “American in Paris” and Copland’s beloved “Appalachian Spring Suite,” featuring dancers from the Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley. Allentown-area audiences might be excused for thinking that Simon Mulligan is a jazz pianist. He’s established a popular following in that genre through his frequent appearances with his trio in the Jazz Upstairs series in Symphony Hall’s Rodale Room, backed by local musicians — bassist Gene Perla and drummer Dave Willard. But Mulligan is a lot more than that. Classical fans might recall his first concert in Allentown was in fact a classical one — Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra on Valentine’s Day weekend in 2012. The Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley will perform artistic director Karen Knerr's new choreography to Aaron Copland's 'Appalachian Spring' on stage with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.
