Let it not be said that the RegiopolisNotre Dame Panthers are unwilling to go to great lengths to hunt down a provincial high school hockey crown.

The Panthers, slated to depart Kingston early this morning for the AAA/AAAA Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship at Fort Frances, face a 1,900 kilometre journey westward.

After a bus ride to Toronto comes a flight to Thunder Bay, then another bus to the Rainy River District. With any luck at all and a steady tailwind, they should pull into town around suppertime.

By car, you'd be looking at a good 20 hours, straight driving.

How far away is Fort Frances? Tournament cochairman and native son Terry Ogden put it in perspective during a phone interview.

"Let's put it this way: The Sudbury team rolled in here yesterday, 15 hours by bus."

And that's from Sudbury, folks, which isn't exactly a leisurely Sunday drive from these parts.

"No one, however, is making a longer trip than the Kingston team," Ogden added.

For Regi, seeded 18th in the 20team event, copping a provincial pennant represents at best a longshot. The cats posted an unspectacular 63 regularseason mark before reeling off five http://www2.alcdsb.on.ca/~regiath/winter/hockey/boys/BoysHockeyPastChamps/2006BoysHockeyChamps.html 2/7 5/4/2017 RND ScoreBoard straight wins to take the county and regional titles.

"We're not the same team we were in midseason," insisted Jim David, who coaches Regi along with Mike Faught. "We've improved a lot and we don't want to sell ourselves short.

"Our is to be competitive and do ourselves proud."

With those five straight playoff victories, the cats are indeed hot. But they may need to get whitehot to advance out of a pool comprised of generously seasoned opponents.

St. Anne Saints, the No. 15 seed from Tecumseh, comes in at 2833; 10th seeded Sherwood Saints (Hamilton) are 3052 and seventhseeded A.B. Lucas of London is 2833. Mississauga's Mount Carmel Crusaders didn't list their record, but it can't be too shabby they're the No. 2 seed.

For Regi, it's baptism by fire: An openinggame date against the powerful Crusaders tomorrow afternoon.

"We're not worried about the seeding," reasoned Regi wing Travis Rizzi, whose brother Tony toils with the . "We were underdogs throughout the playoffs and we beat out the second and firstplace teams.

"We catch teams offguard."

Several schools have played in excess of 30, 40, even 50 games this season. Topseeded St. Michael's College, as one might expect, sports an imposing 3141 wonloss mark. Yet even midrange seeds have eyepopping records. Perennial contender Fort Frances Muskies, for instance, is seeded 12th despite a 427 record this winter.

The host Muskies this marks the fourth time Fort Frances has hosted high school hockey's windup show have mined three OFSAA golds, four silvers and one bronze. Former player Mike Allison, now a customs agent in the border town of 8,000, is an exHuskie.

The schedule, in a word, is hectic.

"Remember the Olympics and the complaints of maybe having to play six games in 11 days?" Ogden said. "Here, the two finalists will have played seven games in four days."

As for the remote location of the waterfront town that looks across the Rainy River at Minnesota, there is this consolation: Teams travelling from the east save one hour at journey's end: Fort Frances, the oldest settled community west of Lake Superior, isn't even in our time zone. It's on Central Standard Time, the same as Winnipeg, Chicago, St. Louis and those other midwest locales.

EOSSAA Boys Hockey Tournament 10:30 SemiFinal RND vs Thousand Islands 62 Win 2:40 Final RND vs Holy Cross 8 6 Win

EOSSAA Final vs Holy Cross: It was like Deja Vu all over again as Regi and cross town rivals Holy Cross met to decide a championship title, this time the EOSSAA crown. Regi was confident that Holy Cross would not be taking a 92 thrashing in the KASSAA final lightly and were prepared to meet an entirely different Crusader squad for this contest. It was a see saw battle throughout, with big hits, great scoring chances and lots of action at both ends. After two periods, Regi held a tenuous 64 lead thanks to goals from Matt Griffin, Adam Ruffolo, Anthony Salamone, Travis Rizzi and 2 from Zack Moran. Holy Cross started the final frame with authority, storming back to tie the game at 6 and putting the Panthers back on their heels. However, Connor Brash stepped up and notched the go ahead goal and the Panther team responded, stepping up their game and again shutting down the potent Holy Cross offence. Adam Greene notched an empty net goal to seal the victory and the Panthers clinched the EOSSAA crown by an 86 margin over Holy Cross. Special mention goes to the Regi defence who played an effective physical game in shutting down the dangerous Crusader forwards. Nick Richardson made several great stops when they were needed most. A great team victory. Congratulations boys! Next stop...Fort Frances!! Battling through a sluggish start, the boys found their legs in the third period and stormed to a convincing victory. Regi goals came from Zack Moran, Murray MacFarlane with 2, Adam Greene, Brendan Bureau and Travis Rizzi. Nick Richardson was again stellar in net, denying TISS any opportunity to get back in the game. RND Recaptures KASSAA Crown 02.28.06 Regi repeats as KASSAA champion with a dominating 9 2 victory over Eastern Ontario's largest high school the Holy Cross Crusaders. A total team effort all over the ice at Kinsmen, Regi shut down the high powered Holy Cross offence. Nick Richardson was again spectacular between the pipes and the defence gave him lots of help keeping the lanes clear and moving the puck. It was an offensive display at the other end. Zack Moran opened the scoring on the first shift of the game, en route to a 4 point game. Travis Rizzi had 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists), Adam Greene notched a hat trick and added an assist. Anthony Salamone, Matt Griffin and Adam Ruffolo rounded out the Regi scoring. Panthers pound Crusaders in Final

The WhigStandard Mr. Pat Kennedy Local Sports Wednesday, March 01, 2006 @ 07:00

Not that long ago, the RegiopolisNotre Dame Panthers resembled a disinterested shinny troupe whose 53 mark in the high school boys hockey loop flattered the largely uninspiring efforts put forth most nights. The cats, however, turned their season around. They snapped into focus and commenced a lateseason charge that produced a second straight county championship for the Russell Street schoolhouse. Regi hammered the Holy Cross Crusaders 92 in yesterday's league final before a full house at Kinsmen Arena. The cureall turned out to be a topshelf tournament in faroff Burlington in early February. The cats, it's worth pointing out, dropped all three of their games. "The competition was very good and we didn't win a game, but the guys had a lot of fun and really came together," Regi coach Jim David recalled following yesterday's triumph. "They didn't win, but they came away knowing they could compete." Compete? Try dominate, and from the getgo at that. The cats looked for a quick start and found it in a threepack of goals in the game's opening three minutes. They answered a Holy Cross tally with a twinpack to lead 51 after one period. Holy Cross never recovered. "We were too confident," lamented Crusaders starting goalkeeper Zach Desousa, who gave way to Adam Flynn. "We thought we had it in the bag, with the undefeated season and everything, but we weren't ready for this game." Desousa said the quick 30 deficit stunned his squad. "After we fell behind, we lost our confidence and never got it back." Adam Greene registered a hat trick and two assists in the victory, which avenged Regi's 31 loss to Holy Cross in the opening game of the campaign. Zack Moran, with two, Anthony Salamone, Adam Ruffalo, Matt Griffin and Travis Rizzi added the other markers. The latter, younger brother of Kingston Frontenacs forward Tony Rizzi, engineered four other goals to match Greene's fivepoint output. Mike Newton and Brandon Tulk replied for Holy Cross, which finished the regular season in first place with an unblemished 90 record. "Upsets are sweet," crowed Regi's Moran. "We weren't the favourite but we came in with high hopes, especially after beating secondplace Frontenac in the semifinal." Added economysized winger Griffin: "At the start of the season our focus was not there. http://www2.alcdsb.on.ca/~regiath/winter/hockey/boys/BoysHockeyPastChamps/2006BoysHockeyChamps.html 5/7 5/4/2017 RND ScoreBoard Once it came around, the heart came with it. That's what got us here our heart. "This was by far our best team effort all season," added the 225pound team captain. The victory propels the Panthers into next Wednesday's regional playoff at the Memorial Centre, along with Fellowes of Pembroke and Thousand Islands of Brockville. A request has been made to add a second local team to make it a straight fourteam playoff. If approved, that fourth team would be Holy Cross.

Panthers Qualify to Defend Their KASSAA Crown 02.24.06 With a stellar effort against the powerful Frontenac Falcons, Regi returns to the KASSAA championship game to face the Holy Cross Crusaders. From the opening faceoff to the final buzzer, Regi stuck firmly to its game plan and effectively shut down the Frontenac attack. After a scoreless first period with neither team giving an inch, Connor Brash got the Panthers on the board, driving home a nice feed from Adam Ruffolo in the second period. Ruffolo made it a 2 goal margin midway through the third period with a nifty dangle and backhand over the Frontenac goalkeeper. Frontenac stormed right back and made it close at 21 within 30 seconds and it was a nailbiter until Adam Greene sealed the victory with an empty net marker with 27 seconds to go to seal the 3 1 semifinal victory. This was a total team victory with every player contributing a complete effort at both ends of the rink. Nick Richardson was a wall for Regi, stopping several shots in close from the talented Frontenac offence. Regi looks to carry the momentum over the weekend and bring it to crush the Crusaders on Tuesday. Gametime is 2:30 at Kinsmen Arena. Come out and cheer our boys on to a second consecutive KASSAA championship.RND High Scorers: Connor Brash 1 goal, Adam Ruffolo 1 goal, 1 assist, Adam Greene 1 goal, Brock Sullivan 1 assist, Anthony Salamone 1 assist

Adam Ruffolo provided the game winner on a nifty pass from Brian Molloy. Travis Rizzi opened the scoring for the panthers on a quick play off the face off in the LaSalle zone. Nick Richardson was solid in net for Regi making several key stops to keep the game sheet in the panthers favour. RND High Scorers: Travis Rizzi 1 goal, Adam Ruffolo 1 goal, Adam Greene 1 assist, Brian Molloy 1 assist. Regi faces the powerful Frontenac Falcons this Friday at Kinsmen Arena at 2:30.
