During this study 13 species of seven genera belong to two families Ascidae and Melicharidae were collected and identified. Four species namely Asca aphidioides (LINNAEUS), Zerconopsis michaeli EVANS & HYATT, Antennoseius (Antennoseius) bacatus ATHIAS-HENRIOT from family Ascidae and Proctolaelaps scolyti EVANS from family Melicharidae are new records for the mites fauna of Guilan Province. Proctolaelaps fiseri SAMŠIŇÁK (Melicharidae) and Zerconopsis remiger (KRAMER) (Ascidae) are new for Iran mites fauna. Expanded descriptions including illustrations of the adult female of Proctolaelaps fiseri and Zerconopsis remiger, respectively are provided based on the Iranian material. Introduction The superfamily Ascoidea is richly represented in tropical, temperate, and arctic alpine regions, where many of its members are free-living predators of nematodes and micro- arthropods in soil or humus and suspended arboreal litter habitats. -

Abstract Altogether 37 predatory mite species from 14 families (Parasitiformes and Acariformes) were collected using leaf sampling and pit-fall trapping in strawberry fi elds (1997 - 2001). Thirty- six were recorded on strawberries for the fi rst time in Latvia. Two species, Paragarmania mali (Oud.) (Aceosejidae) and Eugamasus crassitarsis (Hal.) (Parasitidae) were new for the fauna of Latvia. The most abundant predatory mite families (species) collected from strawberry leaves were Phytoseiidae (Amblyseius cucumeris Oud., A. aurescens A.-H., A. bicaudus Wainst., A. herbarius Wainst.) and Anystidae (Anystis baccarum L.); from pit-fall traps – Parasitidae (Poecilochirus necrophori Vitz. and Parasitus lunaris Berl.), Aceosejidae (Leioseius semiscissus Berl.) and Macrochelidae (Macrocheles glaber Müll). Introduction Predatory mites play an important ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems and they are increasingly being used in management for biocontrol of pest mites, thrips and nematodes (Easterbrook 1992; Wright, Chambers 1994; Croft et al. 1998; Cuthbertson et al. 2003). Many of these mites have a major infl uence on nutrient cycling, as they are predators on other arthropods (Santos 1985; Karg 1993; Koehler 1999). In total, investigations of mite fauna in Latvia were made by Grube (1859), who found 28 species, Eglītis (1954) – 50 species, Kuznetsov and Petrov (1984) – 85 species, Lapiņa (1988) – 207 species, and Salmane (2001) – 247 species. -

Part II: acarofauna of farm buildings Krzysztof Solarz1 · Celina Pająk2 Received: 5 September 2018 / Accepted: 27 February 2019 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract Exposure to mite allergens, especially from storage and dust mites, has been recognized as a risk factor for sensitization and allergy symptoms that could develop into asthma. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of mites in debris and litter from selected farm buildings of the Małopolskie province, South Poland, with particular refer- ence to allergenic and/or parasitic species as a potential risk factor of diseases among farm- ers. Sixty samples of various materials (organic dust, litter, debris and residues) from farm buildings (cowsheds, barns, chaff-cutter buildings, pigsties and poultry houses) were sub- jected to acarological examination. The samples were collected in Lachowice and Kurów (Suski district, Małopolskie). A total of 16,719 mites were isolated including specimens from the cohort Astigmatina (27 species) which comprised species considered as allergenic (e.g., Acarus siro complex, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Glycy- phagus domesticus, Chortoglyphus arcuatus and Gymnoglyphus longior). Species of the families Acaridae (A. siro, A. farris and A. immobilis), Glycyphagidae (G. domesticus, L. destructor and L. michaeli) and Chortoglyphidae (C. arcuatus) have been found as numeri- cally dominant among astigmatid mites. The majority of mites were found in cowsheds (approx. 32%) and in pigsties (25.9%). The remaining mites were found in barns (19.6%), chaff-cutter buildings (13.9%) and poultry houses (8.8%). -

A maturity index for gamasid soil mites (Mesostigmata: Gamsina) as an indicator of environmental impacts of pollution on forest soils. Appl. Soil Ecol. 9, 447– 452) in five natural forest reserves in eastern Austria. These sites were assumed to be stable and undisturbed reference habitats. The maturity indices of the gamasine communities were near their maximum in the investigated stands, and thus performed well towards the ‘‘high end’’ of the total range of the index. An occasionally inundated floodplain forest yielded much lower values. However, the correlation of the index with humus type, as proposed by Ruf et al. (Ruf, A., Beck, L., Dreher, P., Hund-Rienke, K., Ro¨mbke, J., Spelda, J., 2003. A biological classification concept for the assessment of soil quality: ‘‘biological soil classification scheme’’ (BBSK). Agric. Ecosyst. Environ. 98, 263–271) for managed forests, was not found. This indicates that the humus form is not a good predictor of the index over its entire range and is inappropriate to assess the fit of test communities. Fourteen percent of the species in this study were omitted from index calculation because adequate data for their families are lacking. -

Overall, 27 species were identified from 41 samples collected between September 2001 and August 2002. The most numerous species in this study were Veigaia nemorensis, Leptogamasus cristulifer, and Gamasellus montanus. Our study has also confirmed the occurrence or rare mite species, such asVeigaia mollis and Paragamasus insertus. Additionally, 5 mite species were recorded as new to the fauna of this Park: Vulgarogamasus remberti, Macrocheles tardus, Pachylaelaps vexillifer, Iphidosoma physogastris, and Dendrolaelaps (Punctodendrolaelaps) eichhorni. The new species differs from the other Afrotropical rotundabaloghid mites in following character combination: female genital shield with long apical process, the setae v7 and v8 long and pilose, v6 long and smooth, v2 short and needle-like, female genital, dorsal and ventral shields are ornamented by irregular pits, sternal setae short and needle-like. This character combination is unknown within the African rotundabaloghids. Keywords: Soil mites, Uropodina, taxonomy, Cameroon. The family Rotundabaloghidae is one of the intensively studied groups within the Uropodina mites with more than 120 described species from the tropics. The members of the large and widely distributed subgenus Rotundabaloghia (Circobaloghia) occur in all the tropics; Circobaloghia species are reported from Neotropical, Afrotropical and Orien- tal regions (Kontschán 2010). The West-African sub-region is a poorly investigated part of the Ethiopian realm from rotundabaloghid mite point of view. Rotundabaloghid mites from this sub-region are presented only from Cameroon, Ghana, Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Togo and Sierra Leone and till today only 15 species are reported (Kontschán 2010, 2019a, 2020a, b). -

A total of 1080 soil samples were taken from June 2004 to September 2005. The samples, including the organic horizon from the herb layer and litter from rock cracks, were collected using steel cylinders (area 40 cm2, depth 0–10 cm). They were generally dominated by Gamasellus montanus, Veigaia nemorensis, and Lepto- gamasus cristulifer. Rhodacaridae, Parasitidae and Veigaiidae were the most numerously represented families as regards to individuals. Among the 55 recorded mesostigmatid species, 13 species were new to the fauna of the Stołowe National Park. Thus the soil mesostigmatid fauna of the Szczeliniec Wielki plateau is generally poor and at an early stage of succession. Ledeganckstraat 35, 9000 Ghent, Belgium Corresponding author : * [email protected] ABSTRACT One of the key issues in compost research is to assess the quality and maturity of the compost. Biological parameters, especially based on mesofauna, have multiple advantages for monitoring a given system. The mesofauna of compost includes Isopoda, Myriapoda, Acari, Collembola, Oligochaeta, Tardigrada, Hexapoda, and Nematoda. This wide spectrum of organisms forms a complex and rapidly changing community. Up to the present, none of the dynamics, in relation to the composting process, of these taxa have been thoroughly investigated. However, from the mesofauna, only nematodes possess the necessary attributes to be potentially useful ecological indicators in compost. They occur in any compost pile that is investigated and in virtually all stages of the compost process. Compost nematodes can be placed into at least three functional or trophic groups. They occupy key positions in the compost food web and have a rapid respond to changes in the microbial activity that is translated in the proportion of functional (feeding) groups within a nematode community. Further- more, there is a clear relationship between structure and function: the feeding behavior is easily deduced from the structure of the mouth cavity and pharynx. Thus, evaluation and interpretation of the abundance and function of nematode faunal assemblages or community structures offers an in situ assessment of the compost process.
