Christ Lutheran Church exists to nurture disciples of Jesus Christ. To this end, and with the help of God, we will do this through preaching, teaching, and reaching. Preaching the Word and administering the Sacraments. Teaching all things Jesus has commanded in His Word through instructional opportunities. Reaching out and serving others.

Fifth Sunday of Easter/H.C. May 1/2, 2021 WELCOME! We are blessed to have you worshiping with us today at Christ Lutheran Church. If you are worshiping with us for the first time, we welcome you and pray that your worship is a blessing. Please sign our fellowship pad by the door and consider talking with our Pastors if you have any questions about receiving Holy Communion, Communicant membership, transfer of membership from another LC-MS congregation, or any other questions. Nursery Information: The nursery in Room 120 is closed at this time. An unstaffed calming room (cry room for children) is available at the back of the Sanctuary during the church service. The sound system will allow you to hear the service. Please, wipe down the space with the sanitizing wipes when you leave. Thanks! For Those With Hearing Difficulties… Listening devices/hearing amplifiers are available for use in both the Sanctuary and Parish Hall. Please ask an usher for assistance.

TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION: We take seriously the spiritual care of those who commune at our altar. Those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily (not recognizing the real bodily presence) do so to their great harm (see 1 Cor. 11:27-29). Furthermore, Holy Communion is a confession of what is taught and believed at this altar (1 Cor. 11:26). Therefore, any who are not yet baptized, instructed and confirmed in the teachings of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (Luther’s Small Catechism), in doubt, or who hold a confession (beliefs) differing from that of the LCMS, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, will want to first speak with a pastor before communing. All non-LCMS/AALC visitors are welcome to come up to the altar to receive a bless- ing by crossing their arms in front of them. For further study see Matthew 5:23f; 10:32f; 18:15-35; 26:26-29; 1 Cor. 11:17-34.

CHANTED SERVICES AT CHRIST LUTHERAN… Why do we have chanted services at Christ Lutheran Church? “Chant is the Musical speech of the Church in worship. In our 21st century context, chanting still has benefit and blessing as it lifts our worship above ordinary conversation and the speech of everyday life.” (Manual on the Pastor’s Chant by M. Alfred Bichsel, Concordia Publishing House) All services will be chanted on the first, third, and fifth weekends of every month and on every Feast day (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Holy Trinity, , etc.), and at most midweek Advent and Lenten services.

Confession & Absolution P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P Let us pray. O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 12:1-6 1You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. 2“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. 5“Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the 7 earth.

6Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Epistle: James 1:16-21 16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 19Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. 21Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Gospel: John 16:5-15 5[Jesus said:] “But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Apostles’ Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 9 Sit

Service of the Sacrament Preface

P It is truly good, right, and salutary … evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all- availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 13 C Amen.

Lord’s Prayer P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Interlude

5 Mighty Victim from the sky, 6 Now no more can death appall, Hell’s fierce pow’rs beneath You lie; Now no more the grave enthrall; You have conquered in the fight, You have opened paradise, You have brought us life and light. And Your saints in You shall rise. Alleluia! Alleluia! 15 Hymn continues…

7 Easter triumph, Easter joy! D 8 Father, who the crown shall give, This alone can sin destroy; Savior, by whose death we live, From sin’s pow’r, Lord, set us free, Spirit, guide through all our days: Newborn souls in You to be. Three in One, Your name we praise. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Hymn: LSB 627 - “Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior”

5 Firmly hold with faith unshaken 8 “For what purpose was My dying That this food is to be taken If not for your justifying? By the sick who are distressed, And what use this precious food By hearts that long for peace and rest. If you yourself were pure and good?”

6 Agony and bitter labor 9 If your heart this truth professes Were the cost of God’s high favor; And your mouth your sin confesses, Do not come if you suppose You will be your Savior’s guest, You need not Him who died and rose. Be at His banquet truly blest.

7 Christ says: “Come, all you that labor, 10 Let this food your faith so nourish And receive My grace and favor: That its fruit of love may flourish Those who feel no pain or ill And your neighbor learn from you Need no physician’s help or skill. How much God’s wondrous love can do.

Post-Communion Collect A Let us pray. O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

NEWS/NOTES May 1/2, 2021 THIS WEEK: FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (CANTATE) Isaiah 12:1–6 James 1:16–21 John 16:5–15

Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the Helper Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirit helps us by taking what is Christ’s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid” (Is. 12:2).

A NOTE ON STEWARDSHIP… James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” God is the source of all goodness. When we do good, therefore, we imitate Him and reflect His light to all the world. Christians give freely because God has first given so freely to us. We are only imitating our Father and growing up into His likeness.

NEXT WEEK: SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (ROGATE) Numbers 21:4–9 1 Timothy 2:1–6 or James 1:22–27 John 16:23–30 (31–33)

The Father Answers Our Prayers Because of Jesus “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you” (John 16:23). To pray in Jesus’ name is to pray as one who has been baptized. For it is in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you a son of God with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion, our Lord Jesus broke through the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. To pray in Jesus’ name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God and men, who gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:1–6). Like Moses in the wilderness, Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up for us on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father (Num. 21:4–9). Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22–27) we pray with boldness and confidence as dear children of God. 23
