19 The History Facts The South Airport,a military training site The South Airport area was used as a military training site during Japan’s rule and was called Machangding. It was given the name South Airport because it was also used as a military airport. After Taiwan’s retrocession, this area was turned into an Air Force military community and the first Public Housing. Later a golf court for the rich was constructed at the site of South Airport. The former President Chiang Ching-kuo decided to convert this place to the Youth Park to offer leisure services to the public.
