3 Presentation and Introduction

The Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) was established in 2005 with the aim of promoting the development of new intercontinental routes from Barcelona Airport.

Its members are Generalitat de Catalunya - Department of Planning and Sustainability, Barcelona City Council - Economic Promotion, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and AENA, S.A.

Mrs. Sonia Corrochano Mr. Isidre Gavín Mr. Gerardo Pisarello Mr. Miquel Valls Director of Josep Tarradellas President of BARDC & Secretariat Deputy City Mayor President Barcelona - El Prat Airport of Infraestructure and Transport ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

Mr. Isidre Gavín President of the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) Govern of - Secretariat of Infrastructure and Transport.

On behalf of the four members of the BARDC · Barcelona City Council, Government of Catalonia, Barcelona Cham- ber of Commerce, and Aena Aeropuertos · I am proud to share with you what is for us a very positive scenario for Barcelona Airport. 2017 was a memorable year with 16 new intercontinental routes; 2018 has been a year of consolidation of routes and further growth. We have a long list of airlines adding new long haul frequencies to Barcelona; a second operator for Seoul; and two brand new destinations, Boston and Abu Dhabi. For 2019, we have already ensured further new destinations and capacity increases.

Barcelona · El Prat Airport is one of the fastest growing hubs in Europe and will continue to improve its infrastructure. Recently, Aena Aeropuertos’ new Strategic Plan has been approved together with a new Barcelona Airport Master Plan 2017- 2026; so in the next few years we will add a Satellite Terminal purposely built for long-haul travel and a real estate development initiative around the airport that will complement the metropolitan area and airport growth.

Regarding the committee, we continue to be highly engaged in bringing in more intercontinental airlines, as this is the most essential goal towards which we have been working since 2005. In Barcelona, we pride ourselves on being creative and much focused on our promotional and business efforts. Therefore, this year we released the new BARDC Strategic Plan 2018-2019 reviewing our vision and objectives.

In this plan, we show the important development of the Low-Fare, Long-Haul business model that seems to fit especially well with our airport. In fact, now most of the world’s low-fare, long-haul airlines are present in our airport and two of them have built permanent aircraft bases. Barcelona is a new generation hub with one of the highest connectivity potentials and highest number of destinations served in the world. Meanwhile, we also very much appre- ciate the opportunity to be linked with full network carriers that provide capillary connectivity to many other smaller regions beyond their main hub.

Finally, we are committed in staying connected and being relevant for this global reality through our airport. According to MIDT data, 1% of world cities generate 40% of global traffic. Barcelona is in this prominent group. The BARDC is convinced that thanks to its promotional work conducted with transparency, coordination, and by setting up common goals it can ensure that the city and its territory of influence remain a globally com- petitive region.

5 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

INTRODUCTION

Barcelona reached 50.1 million passengers last year, 2018, with 6.1% growth compared to the pre- vious year. In addition, the Barcelona airport master plan 2017-2026 was presented, including the construction of the new satellite terminal in T1 that will enable the future growth of the airport in the coming years.

In 2018 Barcelona maintained the growth of the last few years in number of frequencies, capacity, and number of passengers, and consolidated the number of destinations and airlines. There are still opportunities worldwide for more routes to/from Barcelona; there are six cities that have more than 100,000 indirect passengers from Barcelona, none of them without a direct flight.

The Barcelona new long-haul strategic plan 2018-2019 was presented as one of the activities of the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC). The five target destinations to achieve a direct flight were Tokyo, Mexico, Bangkok, Santiago de Chile, and Delhi, two of them, Santiago de Chile and Mexico, will start a new flight in 2019.

Also, a new objective to facilitate and promote local development of the industrial sector, air transport, and travel services was presented.

16 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

Number of passengers in the intercontinental market shows great growth of 16.5% inter-annual va- riation, to reach 5.4 million passengers.

The largest market at Barcelona airport is EU and Schengen countries – with 29.2 million passengers and 5.1% year-over-year growth, breaking last year’s negative trend.

The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of direct intercontinental traffic from Bar- celona airport over the last 6 years shows 17% growth.

BARCELONA DIRECT SCHEDULED TRAFFIC DISTRIBUTION 2018

International direct flights reached 11% of Barcelona airport traffic in 2018, one per- centage point over last year.

In order to analyse the work carried out by the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC), it is necessary to observe the evolution of scheduled direct passenger traffic.Scheduled direct intercontinental passenger traffic (non-charter) is precisely the primary area of interest of the BARDC.

The connectivity of Barcelona is not high in numbers compared to the total volume of passengers at the airport. Vueling is the main company to operate connecting flights in Barcelona.

Owing to the importance of connectivity as regards feeding long-haul flights, the BARDC is wor- king on actions to help raise this value.

20 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

The top 15 unserved or underserved destinations from Barcelona airport are ranked by non-di- rect flight number of passengers. It is important to mention Tokyo in the first position with 190,483 passengers in 2018. Barcelona is also the first unserved direct flight destination in number of pas- sengers by Tokyo.

Despite the existing direct flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco, the market is larger and total demand underwent interannual growth of 52% and 58%, respectively.

It is also important to mention the largest international markets in number of passengers during 2018, starting with New York with 529,773 pax (with 20% growth) followed by Tel Aviv with 455,030 pax.

Barcelona maintains 6 cities with more than 100,000 indirect passengers.

25 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

The two main cargo operators in Barcelona are Emirates and Qatar airways (25% interannual grow- th). Both represent 25% of total cargo at Barcelona airport, two airlines that exceeded the two couriers UPS and DHL.

It is worth highlighting the growth of Turkish airlines with 15% growth over the previous year, to reach 7% of the total. The greatest interannual growth is the increase in cargo by Air China, with 63%, al- though it only represents 3% of total cargo at Barcelona airport.

Lack of direct flights with a capacity for cargo out of Barcelona, the main industrial area in , continues to be a weakness for Barcelona that the BARDC is already working on to improve alongside with Barcelona Centre Logístic.

Source: Own elaboration based on AENA, IATA and AEAT data

Barcelona Airport generates 32% of the air consignment note, air waybill (AWB) in Spain. Catalan exports are concentrated in Europe, but air freight exports from Barcelona are distributed between Asia and Oceania (31%), North America (22%), Latin America (20%), and the Middle East (17%). This is a strong point of Catalan air exports, enabling it to be more resilient to possible changes in demand.

Air freight worldwide represents less than 1% of trade by volume, but over 35% by value (IATA). In- deed, in the case of Barcelona, the average value of exports by air is 48.3 €/Kg, which is much higher than the average value for all modes of transport (3.03 €/Kg).

AIR CARGO DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Air cargo is an instrument to improve Catalan industrial competitiveness. It should not be understood as an end in itself but as a facilitating element to promote international trade and the interna- tionalization of Catalan companies. This element is also understood as key to attract new airlines and/or sustain existing long haul routes.

Within the Catalan industrial base, the 4 large user sectors of air cargo we have: are pharmaceutical and chemical, textile, food perishable and electronic (especially linked to the automotive indus- try). E-commerce is also showing an outstanding volume in Barcelona which is impacting cargo capacity.

The air cargo destinations are mainly long-haul, focusing on the intercontinental markets of Asia (35%) and North America (20%).

The so called Barcelona Air Freight BCL Community and the Logistic Security Group is a group of 21 members of private and public entities working together and representing the whole logistic value chain (exporters, forwarders, truckers, cargo terminals, airlines, etc). The group has been working together since 2013 and is part of the Barcelona Catalunya Centre Logistics (BCL). In 2018 we have started to work with a new organization committee formed by 7 members representing each part of the value chain. In terms of promoting new air routes the group works in coordination with Barcelona Air Route Development Committee.

CASES AND MARKET STUDIES

Every year the BARDC studies the opportunities detected in the air market for ope- ning new air routes from Barcelona- El Prat Airport.

In addition to data regarding air traffic, these analyses include data related to the economic and business evolution of Barcelona and its hinterland with the regional markets chosen. The combination of these analyses focuses on determining the via- bility of new long-haul routes.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ROUTES ASIA AND WORLD ROUTES 2018

In 2018, the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee elaborated, updated and published the technical cases with the most potential to establish a direct route from Barcelona, including the following destinations: Houston, Tampa, Or- lando, Dallas, San Francisco, Santiago de Chile, Mexico, Abu Dhabi, Addis Aba- ba, Tokyo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Bangkok, New Delhi, Bangalore, Taipei, and Manila, among others.

Following the results of the studies, the BARDC developed a set of technical info- graphics that show the potential of Barcelona with destinations not yet served or not adequately served. In this documentation, the air traffic potential for different target markets (Japan, China, South Korea, India, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Brazil.) was analyzed and sent to the main airlines that could show potential interest in taking advantage of this market.

About Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a multicultural and multifaceted destination, in which the art of hospitality is alive and well: on arrival, visitors are usually greeted with a steaming cup of coffee, a product that was first discovered in this very country. The Department of Immigration and Nationality Affairs of Ethiopia has launched, in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines, an electronic visa service for all international travelers, effective as of June 1, 2018. The electronic visa is processed and issued online in a single website where applicants request, pay for and ensure their entry into the country. Once approved, travelers receive an email with the au- thorization to enter Ethiopia, where an airport agent will stamp their passport upon arrival. Although the electronic visa service, initially launched in June 2017, was available to a limited num- ber of countries, under the new initiative all international visitors will be able to travel to Ethiopia by processing their visa online. Seoul becomes the Asian city best connected to Barcelona thanks to Asiana Airlines

· Barcelona is the main gateway for traffic between Asia and Spain; and Seoul, with Asiana Airlines, has become the city in this continent best connected directly with Barcelona.

· From today, Asiana Airlines will offer four weekly flights to Seoul (Tuesday, Thursday, Satur- day, and Sunday).

· This new route reinforces the long-distance network through the service of the Barcelona-Seoul route.

Asiana Airlines starts four weekly flights (on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays) between Barcelona and Seoul, which reinforces the growing supply of intercontinental flights it has at Barcelo- na-El Prat Airport. Although not the first airline to operate the direct route with Seoul, it was the first time that Asiana has operated in Spain on a regular basis. Previously, this company had operated charter flights in Barcelona. This way Seoul has positioned itself as the city in Asia best connected directly with Barcelona.

39 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

The strong demand between Catalonia and South Korea is backed by the large passenger market that still flies between Barcelona and Seoul in a non-direct way. Almost 200,000 passengers flew indirectly in 2017 via stopovers. In addition to the flow of tourists, economic and commercial relations in general between Korea and Catalonia are becoming increasingly important. Catalan exports to South Korea reached 362.8 mi- llion euros in 2017, 6.2% more than the previous year, the highest figure on record. Catalonia exports to South Korea primarily meat (26.5%), plastics and manufactures (10.8%), and machinery (10.2%). Currently, 1,960 Catalan companies export to South Korea, 699 of which are regular exporters (that is, they have been exporting to this country for the last four years consecutively).

About Asiana Airlines

Asiana Airlines, founded in 1988, has been a member of Star Alliance since 1997, and is one of the two most important airlines in Korea. Based in Seoul, the airline operates 77 international passenger routes to 64 destinations in 22 countries, 11 national passenger routes, and 22 cargo routes to 25 cities in 11 countries. Skytrax has awarded Asiana Airlines with '5 stars' for 12 consecutive years since 2007.

Etihad Airways launches new route to connect Barcelona – Abu Dhabi

· Barcelona is consolidating its appel for the Middle East, Asia & Oceania traffic and is already the main gateway to Spain. · Abu Dhabi is a key city that reinforces existing social and economic ties with Catalonia and stimulates new potential.

The UAE national airline & BARDC celebrated the occasion in style by hosting a special event held at the historic Capella dels Angels, a 16th-century Gothic building which is now part of the Museu d'Art Contem- porani de Barcelona (MACBA), which was attended by leading figures from the local government, diplo- mats, media, corporate partners, and travel trade.

Commercial and cultural links between the UAE and the Catalonia region are flourishing and Etihad is honored to play a pivotal role in facilitating and enhancing the growth of trade and the strong demand for tourism. This is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world, with something to offer the most discerning of travelers, and now for the first time, Abu Dhabi, our amazing home, is accessible from Barcelona with regular non-stop flights, featuring Etihad’s acclaimed inflight hospitality.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer Etihad Aviation Group, said, “We have been tremendously excited about the launch of this service and what better time to arrive here than the month Etihad is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

42 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

“On behalf of the Etihad Aviation Group, I extend our sincere thanks to the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) for their invaluable support with the new service, the launch event, and for their genuine welcome.”

The number of visitors from the UAE to Spain has been rising rapidly, thanks in part to a successful Schengen visa waiver programmer introduced for UAE nationals in 2015.

58 ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018

Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) participates in World Routes 2018 in Guangzhou After participating with its own stand for the first time at World Routes 2016 in Chengdu and the great success as hosts at World Routes 2017 in Barcelona, the BARDC continues to promote new opportunities for intercontinental links to Barcelona / Catalonia with its presence in World Routes 2018, which will take place from September 15 to 18 in the city of Guangzhou, capital of the province of Canton, China.

The BARDC is participating with a modern and innovative stand that presents Barcelona / Catalonia in the world again. The work program foresees an agenda of meetings with potential airlines for Barcelona and the development of future, potentially viable routes according to the latest Strategic Plan 2018-2019 presented in April, as well as the consolidation of existing routes.

The main objectives of the BARDC right now are to open new Asian routes with Tokyo, Delhi, and Ban- gkok and reinforcing existing routes such as Beijing and Shanghai with more frequencies. Mexico and Santiago de Chile are also priority destinations, given the existing demand of passengers.

Other routes not served and with potential to be operated are Dallas, Houston, Guayaquil, Osaka, Manila, and Montevideo. In addition, reinforcing routes with more frequencies is another of the major objectives of the Strategic Plan from 2018 to 2019. In this situation we find destinations such as New York, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, and Bogota, among others.

2017 marked a turning point for intercontinental and long-distance routes at Barcelona-El Prat airport. A total of 16 new intercontinental routes began to operate to 14 destinations, and frequencies increased on 17 existing routes, thus experiencing a strong boost (+ 18.5%) in intercontinental passage.

The BARDC assists with continuity at World Routes from its origins and this will be the third consecutive edition in which it has had its own stand, in order to reinforce the visibility of the destination worldwide in collaboration with different entities involved in the promotion of new intercontinental flight routes at Barcelona-El Prat airport.

World Routes is the reference event that brings together airlines, airports and other interested parties to discuss future global air services.
