Regional Warning IMD Kolkata Website.Docx GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT REGIONAL METEOROLOGICAL CENTRE, ALIPORE, KOLKATA•27 DATE: Sunday, 26th September 2021 Major Weather System over the Region Southwest monsoon been subdued over Bihar, Sikkim & West Bengal . A squall passed over Port Blair on 25.09.2021 at 2028 Hrs IST from westerly direction with highest gust speed of 68 Kmph & lasted for 01 minute. Heavy Rainfall occurred at one or two places over Odisha . Rainfall occurred at most places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands; at a few places over Sikkim , Odisha and at one or two places over Bihar, Jharkhand & West Bengal. The Cyclonic Storm "Gulab" (pronounced as Gul Aab) over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly westwards with a speed of 17 kmph in last 06 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 26th September 2021, over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal near Lat. 18.4°N and Long. 86.4°E, about 180 km eastsoutheast of Gopalpur (Odisha) & 240 km east northeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh south Odisha coasts between Kalingapatnam & Gopalpur as a Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind 75 -85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph, around midnight of 26th September, 2021. The landfall process will commence from late evening of today. The Monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through the centre of Cyclonic Storm "Gulab" (pronounced as Gul Aab) over Northwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal. Weather Warning for the Region During Next Five Days :• Sunday 26 Sep(Day-1) 1) Heavy to very heavy rain(7-20 cm) likely to occur at a few places over Odisha with extremely heavy rain (>20 cm) likely at one or two places over Odisha. 2) Heavy rain (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts of Gangetic West Bengal. 3) Gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph) likely to occur at one or two places over East Midnapore district of Gangetic West Bengal. 4) Thunderstorms with lightning likely to occur at one or two places over Bihar, Jharkhand and the districts of Gangetic West Bengal. Monday 27 Sep(Day-2) 1) Heavy to Very heavy rain (7-20cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Odisha. 2) Heavy rain (7-11cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore districts of Gangetic West Bengal. 3)Thunderstorms with lightning likely to occur at one or two places over Jharkhand and all the districts of Gangetic West Bengal. Tuesday 28 Sep(Day-3) 1) Heavy rain (7-11cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha and Kolkata, North & South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, East & West Burdwan, East & West Midnapore districts of Gangetic West Bengal. 2) Gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph) likely to occur at one or two places over North & South 24 Parganas, Jhargram , Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East & West Midnapore district of Gangetic West Bengal. 3)Thunderstorms with lightning likely to occur at one or two places over Jharkhand and all the districts of Gangetic West Bengal. Wednesday 29 Sep(Day-4) Heavy rain (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Jharkhand, Odisha and West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram districts of Gangetic West Bengal. Thursday 30 Sep(Day-5) Heavy rain (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Odisha and Jharkhand. Fisherman Warning for West Bengal Coast: Due to Cyclonic storm over Northwest and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal, wind speed is very likely to exceed 45 kmph.     CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 11 Lepcha is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Sikkim, Darjeeling district in West Bengal in India, in Ilm district in Nepal, and in a few villages of Samtsi district in south-western Bhutan. The tribal home- land of the Lepcha people is referred to as ne mayLe VÎa ne máyel lyáng ‘hidden paradise’ or ne mayLe malUX VÎa ne máyel málúk lyáng ‘land of eternal purity’. Most of the areas in which Lepcha is spoken today were once Sikkimese territory. The kingdom of Sikkim used to com- prise all of present-day Sikkim and most of Darjeeling district. Kalim- pong, now in Darjeeling district, used to be part of Bhutan, but was lost to the British and became ‘British Bhutan’ before being incorpo- rated into Darjeeling district. The Lepcha are believed to be the abo- riginal inhabitants of Sikkim. Today the Lepcha people constitute a minority of the population of modern Sikkim, which has been flooded by immigrants from Nepal. Although the Lepcha themselves estimate their number of speakers to be over 50,000, the total number is likely to be much smaller. Accord- ing to the 1991 Census of India, the most recent statistical profile for which the data have been disaggregated, the total number of mother tongue Lepcha speakers across the nation is 29,854. While their dis- tribution is largely in Sikkim and the northern districts of West Ben- gal, there are no reliable speaker numbers for these areas. In the Dar- jeeling district there are many Lepcha villages particularly in the area surrounding the small town of Kalimpong.

Vol. 59, No. 4, Oct.-Dec. 1999 Nature and Causes of Inter-District Variations in Yield of Rice in West Bengal, 1970-71 to 1994-95 Utpal Kumar De* INTRODUCTION During the last few decades, substantial changes have been observed in the production and productivity of rice in West Bengal. Several studies have reported the significant contribution of new seed-fertiliser-irrigation technology (widely known as the technology of Green Revolution) to the growth of production and productivity (Dharm Narain, 1976; Mehta, 1981; Hazell, 1982; Rao et al. 1988; Bandyopadhyay, 1989; Ninan and Chandra- shekar, 1991). The growth of production and yield of rice however has not been uniform across different districts of the state. This paper seeks to examine the nature and extent of inter-district variations in the growth of yield of rice in West Bengal during 1970-71 to 1994-95 and the causes for such variations. West Bengal is one of the important agricultural states of India, that has been contributing nearly 15-16 per cent of annual rice production of the country since 1970-71. Its economy is predominantly agricultural. Around two-thirds of its population earn their livelihood from agricultural activities (Government of India, 1992). Rice occupies 70 per cent of the gross cropped area of the state and it is the main staple food of the majority of the population of the state (Table 1). From the exponential rates of growth it is observed that a major part of increase in production of rice during 1970-71 to 1994-95 was due to growth of its yield.' However,the increase in the yield of rice was not uniform across different districts of West Bengal.

    The Keys to British Success in South Asia COLIN WATTERSON “God is on everyone’s side…and in the last analysis he is on the side with plenty of money and large armies” -Jean Anouilh For a period of a period of over one hundred years, the British directly controlled the subcontinent of India. How did a small island nation come on the Edge of the North Atlantic come to dominate a much larger landmass and population located almost 4000 miles away? Historian Sir John Robert Seeley wrote that the British Empire was acquired in “a fit of absence of mind” to show that the Empire was acquired gradually, piece-by-piece. This will paper will try to examine some of the most important reasons which allowed the British to successfully acquire and hold each “piece” of India. This paper will examine the conditions that were present in India before the British arrived—a crumbling central political power, fierce competition from European rivals, and Mughal neglect towards certain portions of Indian society—were important factors in British control. Economic superiority was an also important control used by the British—this paper will emphasize the way trade agreements made between the British and Indians worked to favor the British. Military force was also an important factor but this paper will show that overwhelming British force was not the reason the British military was successful—Britain’s powerful navy, ability to play Indian factions against one another, and its use of native soldiers were keys to military success. The advent of Mahatma Gandhi’s (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) leadership in the Nationalist Movement made a turning point in the Freedom Struggle in India against the British rule. Worldwide economic depression in between the two World Wars and the oppressive colonial rule intensified the rural base of the Freedom Struggle in Midnapore, the largest District in the then Eastern India. Alluvial soil is present in parts of Burdwan, Midnapore anq Bankura districts but the forest resources are mainly confmed to lateritic and red soils. An inventory of the forest resources in these districts was carried out in 1981-82. The present inventory has been undertaken during 1991-92 with the objective of evaluating the present status of forest resources in these districts and estimating the distribution, composition, density, growing stock and growth of the forest crop. The report incorporates details· of the area survey~ methodology adopted, results/findings and comparison with the last survey. The recorded forest area of these districts totals to 4503 sq.km. which is about 11.60% of the geographic area. TIle total forest cover in these districts has been estimated to be in the region of 2400 sq.km.

Anthropol Open J. 2018; 3(1): 18-31. doi: 10.17140/ANTPOJ-3-117 ABSTRACT West Bengal, one of the eastern states of India has the oldest museum in the country apart from housing probably the highest number of museums in India. These museums are showcases of the rich cultural heritage of the country and its development during prehistoric and historical times, artistic and innovative skills of the people, colonial connections and national sentiments. In spite of such a glory and apparent prosperity, the museums in the state are facing a number of problems. It is revealed that many of the museums exist only in name being seldom visited by the common people barring a few connoisseur and researchers. These are run by individual effort and financial support leaving little scope for proper maintenance of objects through appropriate methods of conservation and display. The state neither has a definite policy for the museums, nor does it have any up-to-date data on the number of the museums in the state.
