GBS- a nostalgia Dr. Monoj Dolli Position held at Global Business School, Hubli Faculty (2007-2009) Presently serving as Assistant Professor & Coordinator Department of Economics Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University. Bellary

I am the regular receiver and reader of GBS FOCUS the in- house magazine of GBS HUBLI. It has been sent to me regularly by GBS to which I have some association. It feels nice to share my association for GBS focus.

I joined GBS as faculty in the early years of GBS. Being a new institute lot of things were new for all of us. The new faculties joining, the infrastructure was taking shape, the initial batches were full of exciting students and the atmosphere was full of hope. The new institution also called for some practices to be set as a regular activity.

In my previous institution, I had the exposure and the occasion to organize lot of student activities. I was ready to take up the responsibility at GBS. When I look back I feel satisfied that GBS gave me an opportunity to initiate some very important student activities.

The yearly sports meet pinnacle which I am happy to note continues to be the yearly sports activity, took shape when I was involved in organizing the first Pinnacle in 2008 and indeed it’s nice to know that GBS has been the champion in sports for 4 years in continuation. I also had a opportunity to handle the management fest GALACTO which again has become a regular once in two years activity at GBS, therefore whenever I think of GBS these activities I feel gave me my best days and refresh my memories.

Apart from these two major student activities various regular activities and the academic activities were initiated during my time which are now the very culture of GBS today.

Today GBS is the well established institution and the activities and various culture have taken a deep root. I am sure the institution will grow strength to strength in coming years and these activities and such will enable the students to learn lot of things and help in their career. I spent quiet a good time with the faculty colleagues and members of management.

Currently I have moved to Bellary University but GBS has kept in touch with me that makes me feel proud of getting associated with this institution. I wish GBS all the success and thank them for giving me the opportunity to share my association by way these few thoughts.

One small idea can ignite a revolution just as a single matchstick can start a fire. One such idea - putting employees first and customers second - sparked a revolution at HCL Technologies, the IT services giant.

In this candid and personal account, Vineet Nayar - HCLT\'s celebrated CEO - recounts how he defied the conventional wisdom that companies must put customers first, then turned the hierarchical pyramid upside down by making management accountable to the employees, and not the other way around.

By doing so, Nayar fired the imagination of both employees and customers and set HCLT on a journey of transformation that has made it one of the fastest-growing and profitable global IT services companies and, according to BusinessWeek, one of the twenty most influential companies in the world.

Chapter by chapter, Nayar recounts the exciting journey of how he and his team implemented the employee first philosophy by:

Creating a sense of urgency by enabling the employees to see the truth of the company\'s current state as well as feel the \"romance\" of its possible future state Creating a culture of trust by pushing the envelope of transparency in communication and information sharing Inverting the organizational hierarchy by making the management and the enabling functions accountable to the employee in the valuezone Unlocking the potential of the employees by fostering an entrepreneurial mind-set, decentralizing decision making, and transferring the ownership of \"change\" to the employee in the value zone Refreshingly honest and practical, this book offers valuable insights for managers seeking to realize their aspirations to grow faster and become self-propelled engines of change.

About the Author Vineet Nayar is the CEO of HCL Technologies Ltd., India\'s leading global IT Services Company. The Krishna Key

Five thousand years ago, there came to earth a magical being called Krishna, who brought about innumerable miracles for the good of mankind. Humanity despaired of its fate if the Blue God were to die but was reassured that he would return in a fresh avatar when needed in the eventual Dark Age—the Kaliyug.

In modern times, a poor little rich boy grows up believing that he is that final avatar.

Only, he is a serial killer.

In this heart-stopping tale, the arrival of a murderer who executes his gruesome and brilliantly thought-out schemes in the name of God is the first clue to a sinister conspiracy to expose an ancient secret—Krishna’s priceless legacy to mankind.

Historian Ravi Mohan Saini must breathlessly dash from the submerged remains of Dwarka and the mysterious lingam of Somnath to the icy heights of Mount Kailash, in a quest to discover the cryptic location of Krishna’s most prized possession. From the sand-washed ruins of Kalibangan to a Vrindavan temple destroyed by Aurangzeb, Saini must also delve into antiquity to prevent a gross miscarriage of justice. Ashwin Sanghi brings you yet another exhaustively researched whopper of a plot, while providing an incredible alternative interpretation of the Vedic Age that will be relished by conspiracy buffs and thriller-addicts alike.

Dare to Do! For the New Generation

It is about a life truly ‘lived and living’!

The real-life story of India’s first and highest ranked woman officer in the Indian Police Service – who pioneered a Gandhian (inclusive and transparent) model of policing marked by utmost devotion to duty, innovation, compassion and, above all, willpower!

In Dare to Do! For the New Generation, Kiran Bedi enthuses, motivates and inspires today’s youngsters to clearly chalk out and achieve their goals and objectives without fear and without being overwhelmed by circumstances, however adverse they may 21

be. She emphasizes the fact that qualities such as honesty, dedication, diligence and commitment to one’s profession are vital if one wants to succeed in life. She also drives home the point that there are no short cuts to success. Her own track record (as highlighted in this book) provides various examples of how she converted challenges into opportunities and how she refused to buckle under pressure from some of the most influential people in the corridors of power.

For instance:

When she was in charge of traffic in Delhi in the early 1980s, she forcefully defended her colleague who towed away Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s car for wrong parking and was facing flak from the top brass. When, in 1986, members of the legal profession in Delhi and elsewhere demanded that she be dismissed for, again, backing her colleague for doing his duty sincerely (he had arrested and handcuffed a lawyer suspected of theft), she fought back with grit and determination to clear her name and maintain her credibility. When she was ‘dumped’ in Tihar Jail (in New Delhi) in May 1993, she transformed this virtual hellhole into an ashram, where the inmates discovered new and meaningful ways of leading their lives by giving up their erstwhile criminal activities. She also set up an institution to take care of the prisoners’ families. She has led from the front all along and has faced all obstacles head-on.

In this volume, she has added a highly relevant chapter on the empowerment of women to explain how, in several situations of their own making, even educated women dis-empower themselves. This is a special and exclusive edition, for the new generation, of Kiran Bedi’s bestselling and long running autobiography I Dare!

The Rozabal Line

The Rozabal Line is the debut novel of Ashwin Sanghi.

The author has taken up the creative liberty of using various religious facts in order to whip up an epic fictional thriller. Sanghi speculates that Jesus Christ survived the crucifixion and spent his missing years in India, and that the men searching for Jesus were Buddhist Monks who were searching for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. He mentions that the lost tribes of Israel may have settled in Kashmir.

22

FEBRUARY VOL:1 NO:6 [GBS FOCUS]

The author also introduces St. Thomas as one of Jesus’s closest friends and Mary Magdalene as a woman from the ancient Mauryan Empire headed by Ashoka. The book further features terrorist attacks that share some parallels with the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Sanghi’s hypothesis goes on to establish that Jesus’s descendants are today’s Kashmiri Islamists. The author draws some similar lines between the fate of a group of terrorists and that of Jesus and his 12 apostles. The book traces the roots of various religions and states that all their origins are closely knit.

The Rozabal Line was first published in 2007 under Sanghi's pseudonym Shawn Haigins in the United States. The revised edition was later published in India under Sanghi’s own name in 2008 before Westland published it in 2010.

India Today ranked The Rozabal Line as one the top five bestselling fictional works in India. The Rozabal Line has received favourable reviews from national dailies such as and as well.

Chanakya's Chant

Chanakya's Chant is a racy and gripping account on Chanakya, one of the greatest political strategists India has seen. The story changes track as it narrates the tale of Gangasagar Mishra, the reincarnation of Chanakya, in parallel. Will he be the next kingmaker?

Gangasagar Mishra, a denizen of a quaint old Indian town, is no ordinary man. Society sees him as a Brahmin teacher who can barely make ends meet, but he's the reincarnation of the man who brought the fragmented subcontinent together under a single empire – Chanakya.

Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi gives its readers a look into two parallel worlds that are tied together by the intelligence of the main protagonists. The first story is set in 340 BC, when a young Brahmin man, fueled by the death of his father, vows revenge against the king and overthrows his rule by bringing in Chandragupta Maurya, the first emperor of the Maurya Dynasty.

The scene then shifts to modern day India, where Gangasagar Mishra leads his life as a nonentity – until he decides to groom an ambitious girl from Kanpur into India's prime minister.

23

FEBRUARY VOL:1 NO:6 [GBS FOCUS]

Will Chanakya's manipulative mechanisms change the face of the nation again?

The book takes readers on a joyride through Chanakya's cold and calculating moves.

Chanakya's Chant was very well received by critics and readers. Renowned bureaucrat and writer Shashi Tharoor released the book in Mumbai and termed it a gripping and delightful read. The book is a historical account, but features many colloquial terms too.

Till the Last Breath

One of them is a brilliant nineteen-year-old medical student, suffering from an incurable, fatal disease hurtling her towards a slow, painful death. She counts every extra breath as a blessing. The other is a wasteful twenty-five-year-old drug addict whose every organ system is slowly shutting down. He can’t wait to get rid of his body--to him, the sooner the better.

Two reputed doctors, fighting their own demons from the past, try everything to keep these two patients alive, even putting their medical licenses at risk.

These last days in the hospital change the two patients, their doctors and all the other people around them in ways they had never fathomed.

Till the Last Breath is a heart-warming story about love, life and friendship that reminds us what it means to be alive.

The Sanjay Story

How did a nation of over 600 million people bow down to the whims and fancies of a Prime Minister's pampered son?

Ringside to these developments was Vinod Mehta, perhaps the best- known name in Indian journalism. Mehta distils his observations and insights into this appraisal of the Sanjay Gandhi phenomenon, and its impact on the national scene. The story starts at the Nehru family home, and Feroze Gandhi's relationship with the Nehrus, particularly Kamala and Indira. Key to understanding their son's volatile personality are the complexes and insecurities that plagued the Indira-Feroze marriage.

In his compelling, honest style, Vinod M ehta sifts facts from rumours, and gets to the core of Sanjay's dramatic emergence after the declaration of Emergency. His capturing of the Youth Congress, the excesses of the sterilization campaign (which he thought, rightly, would ensure his place in history), and his obsession with cars, which led to the 26

establishment of the Maruti factory, are all brought out in telling detail, as is the media's role in building the Cult of Sanjay.

Containing a new introduction by the author, The Sanjay Story allows readers to look with the benefit of hindsight at the rise and fall of one of independent India's most controversial figures. What emerges is not only an understanding of Sanjay and his times, but also of India's current political scenario. Flint published more than three decades ago, this still remains the only biography of one of India's most controversial political figures and hence a crucial historical document of an era which changed Indian politics forever.
