1. Elering’s mission is to ensure security of energy supply to Estonian consumers and to keep the lights on.

2. Elering’s choice is to guarantee security of supply through well-functioning regional energy markets.

3. Digital platforms help us bring flexibility to energy markets and integrate more intermittent renewable generation to the grid. People and their energy data

The smart meter measures actual physical activity in your home. This data is private and can only be shared with your consent.

Smart meter data is necessary for billing, but also for energy services, such as flexibility, EV charging control, neighbourhood energy.

Many of these services are provided by companies other than your supplier. Today, those service companies cannot access the data they need and hence people cannot benefit from those services. “Energy meter data is our lifeblood. Energy procurement relies on having access to meter data from all involved production sites and consumer sites. Without data our company does not have a business.

Ease of access to meter data determines our market access cost, customer on-boarding speed and cost. In Estonia, its one integration, standard documentation and a standard way to get customer consent and access their data in the same format.

In Australia customers must download their data from retailer websites and manually send it to us. That's why we work with large customers only as there's manual work. The TSO/Market operator is developing regulation and a new data exchange platform to do this better in the future.“

Our vision is that by 2023 energy retail and services companies can access meter data of homes, businesses and industry, with their consent, in all European countries that have ratified GDPR.

Energy companies should be able to access this data using a single platform across Europe and hence enter new national markets without additional IT investments. In this way, thanks to more competitive energy markets, people and businesses will have more choice, greener energy and better prices. EU-wide proof of concept with 11 innovators

Georg Rute Digitalisation Manager [email protected] GDPR and the Clean Energy Package require consumers to be able to share their data with consent

Clean Energy Package (articles 23, 24): GDPR: consumers must be able to share their data Data privacy must be ensured
