DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ACADEMY

JUAN PERALTA - Latin America Academy Director Juan Peralta is in his 16th season with the organization and serves as the Latin America Academy Director. As the long- time director of the Reds’ academy in the Dominican Republic, under his supervision the organization produced Major Leaguers and . Juan is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Dominican Academy complex, but he also has served roles as a scouting supervisor and in player development in Latin America. He is on the board of directors of the Jose Bautista Foundation, which helps young Dominican baseball players earn sport scholarships to American universities. A graduate of Troy State University USA, where he received a baseball scholarship, Juan lives in Santo Domingo, DR with wife Veronica and children Sebastian and Miranda.

CARLOS FERNANDEZ - Latin America Academy Coordinator Carlos Fernandez is in his fifth season with the Reds. Since he joined the organization, Fernandez has been involved in day-to-day baseball operations, administration and assistance to scouting and player development. He also coordinates the education program for players at the academy that includes English, math and life skills. Fernandez began his career in the baseball operations department for . The Santo Domingo native received a bachelor's degree in business administration and finance from Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santo Domingo, where he also played baseball. He earned a master’s degree in project management from Universidad Isabel I in Burgos, Spain. Carlos lives in Santo Domingo, DR.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

PATRICK SERBUS - Director of Athletic Training, M.Ed., ATC, CSCS Patrick Serbus is in his 19th season in , 10th with the Reds and third as Director of Athletic Training. He spent the previous 4 seasons as the player development athletic training coordinator, and from 2010-2012 he was the organization’s medical administrator. He previously worked as a certified athletic trainer for the , and , with experience at every level of . Serbus earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Texas State University (2000) and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Illinois State University (1998); he is a Certified Athletic Trainer (1998) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (2000). Patrick makes his home in Peoria, AZ throughout the year.

ERIKA SPERL - Athletic Training Administrator, CCMA, PES, CES Erika Sperl is in her first year in the Reds organization. She previously worked with several global sports brands, the (2015), the men and women’s teams at the University of South Florida (2015) and at the University of Minnesota (2011-2012) with the men and women's swimming & diving teams and the men's gymnastics squad. She spent 5 years working between emergency medicine, orthopedics and pediatrics. The Minneapolis native received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota in kinesiology with a minor in clinical movement science and went on to graduate school in the masters of athletic training program at the University of South Florida. Erika is a former distance runner, triathlete and gymnast. She lives in Glendale, AZ.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

MORGAN GREGORY - Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, M.S., RSCC, PES Morgan Gregory is in his seventh season in the organization, his second as strength and conditioning coordinator. He spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as the assistant strength and conditioning coordinator working mainly with rehab players and with the Latin American Academy. Morgan spent his first 3 seasons with the Reds as strength and conditioning coach at Dayton (2013-2014) and at Class A Daytona (2015). In 2014, Morgan earned his master’s degree in performance enhancement and injury prevention from the University of Pennsylvania and in 2011 graduated from Carson-Newman College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He resides in Goodyear, AZ.

ALEX SORIA - Latin America Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, M.S., CSCS Alex Soria is in his second season in the organization, his fifth in professional baseball. He began his career in 2015 with the , working for their Gulf Coast League team for 2 seasons before splitting the 2017 campaign between the GCL club and Class A Rome. In 2010 Alex received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State-Fullerton in kinesiology with an emphasis in fitness and health promotion, then 2 years later earned his master’s degree in kinesiology from CSF with an emphasis in strength and conditioning. Before he began his baseball career, Alex worked as a volunteer assistant strength and conditioning coach at Cal State-Fullerton, a cross country & track strength and conditioning coach at Troy High School, a physical therapist aide and a personal trainer. He grew up in Chino Hills, CA and currently resides in Buckeye, AZ.

222 REDS MEDIA GUIDE NATE TAMARGO - Rehabilitation Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, M.S., RSCC Nate Tamargo is in his 11th season in professional baseball, his sixth with the organization and his second as assistant strength and conditioning coordinator for rehabilitation. He spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as strength and conditioning coach at Class AA Pensacola. His previous stops with the Reds include Rookie Billings (2014) and Class A Dayton (2015) after working in the Dodgers and Rockies organizations. He received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Georgia Southwestern University in 2006 and his master’s in sports medicine from Armstrong Atlantic University in 2013. He is a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Nate resides in Goodyear, AZ.

ASHLEY MEUSER - Minor League Nutrition Coordinator, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, CLT Ashley Meuser is in her first year as the organization's coordinator of minor league nutrition. She spent the 3 previous seasons (2016-2018) consulting with the Reds as the minor league sports dietitian. She also serves as the dietitian for the Flying Pig Marathon events. Prior to joining the Reds, she worked as a consultant for Cincinnati-area high school football programs, as the wellness director and sports dietitian for IronRoad/NRG Fitness. Ashley earned her bachelor’s degree in human nutrition from The State University in 2008 and her master’s degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Cincinnati in 2010. She completed her dietetic internship from Indiana University-Purdue

University, Indianapolis in 2012, where part of her internship was spent in Orlando working with University of Central PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Florida athletics. She lives in Cincinnati.

REHABILITATION

BRAD EPSTEIN - Director of Physical Therapy / Rehab, PT, DPT, ATC Brad Epstein is in his 10th season in the organization, his third as Director Physical Therapy / Rehab. He spent the 2010-2016 seasons as physical therapist/rehabilitation coordinator. Before joining the Reds, in 2009 Brad worked as a physical therapist at New York SportsMed and at Physical Therapy in New York City. He also completed internships with the New York Jets, and . A 2001 graduate of Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in 2005 Epstein received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and pre-physical therapy from Baldwin-Wallace University and in 2009 he earned a doctorate of physical therapy from Columbia University. Brad and his wife, Randi, live in Litchfield Park, AZ with their 6-year-old son, Parker Reid.

MARCUS AHRENS - Physical Therapist, PT, DPT, CMPT, CSCS Marcus Ahrens is in his third season with the organization. Prior to joining the Reds, he worked as a physical therapist and clinical director at PHLEX NYC in New York City. Ahrens in 2017 achieved his certification in manual physical therapy. He earned his doctorate in physical therapy in 2013 from Columbia University, including an internship with the Reds in 2013. He completed a bachelor’s degree in integrative physiology, with a minor in psychology, in 2009 from the University of Iowa. Marcus was born and raised in Iowa City, IA and lives in Phoenix, AZ with his wife, Erin, and their daughter, Finley who was born in 2018.

JOSH BICKEL - Physical Therapist, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS Josh Bickel is in his third season in the organization after working in the Phoenix area as a physical therapist. In 2014, he completed the Proaxis Therapy Sports Residency in Greenville, SC and became licensed as a Sports Certified Specialist (SCS). Following residency, Josh completed the ATI Physical Therapy Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship program and spent the 2016 season with the at their spring training facility in Surprise. During his first season with the Reds he became licensed as an Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS). A graduate of La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, NM, in 2008 he received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Concordia University-Irvine and in 2013 his doctorate in physical therapy from Midwestern University. Josh and his wife, Cathleen, live in Glendale, AZ.

WELLNESS

BECKY SCHNAKENBERG - Minor League Wellness Coordinator Becky Schnakenberg is in her first season as the organization's minor league wellness coordinator, her 22nd year in professional baseball. Through her company, she previously provided counseling and education services to multiple teams, including the Reds. She earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish and a master's in counseling and is a licensed professional counselor. She is the author of multiple language-learning baseball books, one of which is featured in a permanent exhibit in the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. Becky has 2 daughters in college and in her free time enjoys working with military service members and traveling.

RAFAEL CASTILLO - Latin America Wellness Coach Rafael Castillo is in his first season in the organization. He will work with the Reds' Dominican Republic academy players on the mental aspect of their games. Castillo holds a degree in sociology and specializes in education and sports psychology. He has 40 years' experience working with professional tennis players and has worked in professional baseball for the last 13 years.

CHRIS TREMIE - Field Coordinator Chris Tremie is in his first season in the organization. He spent the previous 12 seasons as a member of the Cleveland Indians' player development staff, managing at every level in their system. Chris' minor league managerial career began in 2006 for the GCL Indians, where he also served as the organization's catching coordinator. From there, he moved on to Lake County (2007) and then to Kinston (2008-2009). Tremie continued managing in 2010 at AZL Indians and in 2011 and 2012 at Akron, where he led the Aeros to the 2012 Eastern League title. He spent the last 6 years managing Class AAA Columbus, including the Clippers' 2015 Governor's Cup championship team. Chris played professionally for 14 seasons in 6 organizations (Chicago-AL, Philadelphia, Texas, Pittsburgh, Florida, Houston). He made his Major League debut with the White Sox in 1995 and played professionally through 2005 before retiring and starting his coaching and managing career. His son, Cade, was drafted by the Indians in the 35th round in 2015 but did not sign. Chris and his wife Percilla reside in the Houston area and have four children: Cade, Reagan, Page and Kaden.

JOEL NOBOA - Latin America Field Field Coordinator Joel Noboa is in his 14th season in the organization. He began his coaching career with the Reds as Dominican Republic field coordinator and also managed for 2 seasons in the Dominican Summer League. Noboa during the 2018 off-season, he served as bench coach for Tigres Del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. In 2011, he was named Latin America field coordinator / Latin liaison, overseeing the Dominican Republic and Venezuelan player development operations. Joel also travels to the Reds' minor league affiliates and works with the Latin players in the hitting and mental aspects of the game. He has also served as the hitting coach for Tigres Del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. Noboa spent 4 seasons in the Diamondbacks’ organization after signing in 1997. He also played in the Red Sox and Expos’ systems. He lives in Santo Domingo with wife Sorange, daughters Nashla, 11, and Ashley, 7, and son Joel Isaac, 3.

TONY FOSSAS - Pitching Coordinator Tony Fossas begins his 11th season in the organization and his fourth as minor league pitching coordinator. He spent the 2015 season as pitching coach at Class A Daytona and the 5 years before that as the pitching coach at Class A Dayton. He served in that capacity for the Dragons from 2009-2011 before spending the 2012 campaign as the pitching coach at Rookie Billings. Prior to joining the Reds organization, Fossas spent 5 seasons as the pitching coach at Florida Atlantic University. The former southpaw hurler enjoyed a 21-year professional career, including 10 seasons at the big league level with the Rangers, Brewers, Red Sox, Cardinals, Mariners, Cubs and Yankees. In his Major League debut on May 15, 1988, he coaxed into a bases-loaded -ending play with his first big league pitch. Known as “The Mechanic,” Fossas appeared in the 1996 NLCS as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. Tony, 61, resides in Plantation, FL.

DERRIN EBERT - Assistant to the Pitching Coordinator / Greeneville Pitching Coach Derrin Ebert is in his eighth season in the organization, his first as assistant to pitching coordinator Tony Fossas. He also will serve as pitching coach at Rookie Greeneville. Last year, Derrin was on the Reds' Major League coaching staff and in the off-season served as pitching coach for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. He spent the 2012-2013 seasons as pitching coach for the Rookie AZL Reds, the 2014-2015 campaigns as pitching coach for Rookie Billings and the 2016-2017 seasons as pitching coach for Class A Dayton. Selected by Atlanta in the 18th round of the 1994 free-agent draft, Ebert made all 5 of his Major League appearances for the Braves in 1999 at the age of 22. He also pitched in the Royals, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Brewers and Red Sox minor league systems. Derrin retired as a professional player following the 2005 season. He received his associate of arts degree from Estrella Mountain College in 2008 and a bachelor's in secondary education (history) from Arizona State University in December 2009. Derrin lives in Litchfield Park, AZ with wife Lacey and children Kinzy, Cassie, Brody and Cody.

MILT THOMPSON - Hitting Coordinator Milt Thompson returns for his third season in the Reds organization after spending the previous 4 years working in the Kansas City system. From 2013-2016, he served as the Royals’ outfield, bunting and baserunning coordinator while also holding down the hitting coach duties in 2014 at Class A Wilmington. Thompson was the Astros’ minor league outfield and baserunning instructor from 2011-2012. From 2005-2010, Milt was on the Major League staff in Philadelphia and while there won a with the Phillies in 2008. Thompson served as a coach for the Phillies’ Class AA affiliate in Reading from 1998-1999 and as the organization’s minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator from 2001-2003. Thompson played 18 professional seasons, including parts of 13 years in the big leagues (1984-1996). He was Atlanta’s second-round pick in the June 1979 draft. Milt .313 for the Phillies in the 1993 World Series and set a franchise record with 5 RBI in Game 4.

224 CINCINNATI REDS MEDIA GUIDE BILLY HATCHER - Outfield / Baserunning Coordinator Billy Hatcher is in his 14th season in the organization, his first as a member of the Reds' player development staff. He spent the previous 13 years as a coach for the Major League team, including the last 3 seasons as third base coach (2016-2018) and the 10 prior to that as first base coach (2006-2015). Hatcher also served as the Reds' outfield and baserunning coach. He was hired during Spring Training 2006, after John Moses retired. Prior to joining the Reds, Billy spent the previous 10 seasons in the Tampa Bay organization, first as a roving minor league instructor (1996), then as a minor league coach for 1997 champion St. Petersburg under manager Bill Evers and the next 8 seasons as a member of the Major League coaching staff (1998-2005). He spent 5 seasons as the Devil Rays’ first base coach (1998-99, 2003-05), 2 years as bench coach (2001-02) and 1 season as third base coach (2000). The former played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues for the Cubs, Astros, Pirates, Reds, Red Sox, Phillies and Rangers. During the 1990 Postseason, Hatcher hit .519 overall (14-for-27), including .750 (9-for-12) in the 4-game World Series sweep over the heavily-favored . He established World Series records that year for highest batting average for a 4-game series (.750), most consecutive hits in a series (7) and most doubles in a 4-game series (4). Billy hit one of baseball’s most dramatic post-season home runs in the 14th inning of Game 6 of the Astros’ 1986 Championship Series vs the Mets. His homer off tied the game, but the Mets eventually won in 16 to clinch the pennant. Hatcher, 58, lives in Cincinnati. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT CORKY MILLER - Catching Coordinator After a 17-year professional playing career, Corky Miller is in his fifth season as a roving catching instructor in the Reds’ minor league system. During the 2015-2018 seasons, in addition to his roving duties, he worked as Class A Dayton’s catching coach. Miller played in parts of 11 Major League seasons with the Reds, Twins, Red Sox, Braves and White Sox. He also played in 10 seasons for Class AAA Louisville, a franchise record. Miller is Louisville’s all- time leader with 548 games played and 99 doubles. Following the 2000 season he was voted the “player you want most in your clubhouse” and the “player who will make the best future manager” in a USA Today Baseball Weekly poll of his Southern League peers. In a 2003 poll of managers, Miller was named the league’s best defensive . In 2013, at age 37, Corky became the oldest Reds player to start a game at catcher since 37-year-old Bob Scheffing in 1951. On August 31, 2014 at Louisville Slugger Field, the Bats retired #8, the first uniform number retired by the Louisville franchise.

JAMES BALDWIN - Rehabilitation Coach James Baldwin is in his fourth season in the organization, all as rehabilitation coach at the Goodyear facility. He pitched in the Major Leagues for 11 seasons from 1995-2005 for the White Sox, Dodgers, Mariners, Twins, Mets, Orioles and Rangers. Baldwin was an All-Star in 2000 and finished that season with a 14-7 record. He also made his lone Postseason appearance in 2000, when for Chicago he started Game 3 of the AL Division Series and pitched 6.0 strong innings in the 2-1 loss at Seattle (3h, 1r, 3bb, 2k). Baldwin, 47, lives in Goodyear, Arizona.

FRANK PFISTER - Mental Skills Coach Frank Pfister was hired in November 2015 for the newly-created position of mental skills coach. An infielder and catcher, he played 5 seasons in the Reds’ minor league system from 2008-2012, followed by 2 more years in the independent . After his team won the Frontier League championship in 2013, Pfister retired as a player and accepted a position with the Reds as an intern in baseball operations, where he worked in the front office and at Rookie Billings in 2014. He then worked part-time as a consultant assisting Reds minor league players with the development of mental skills. Before being drafted by the Reds in 2008, Pfister earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy with a minor in music at Emory University. He earned Emory’s Award for outstanding athletic performance in a team-based sport in 2008, was named MVP of the 2007 South Regional tournament, was a 3-time All-Conference and conference MVP in 2008 and still holds Emory’s all-time record for most hits in a season. Pfister lives in .

CODY ATKINSON - Hitting Assessment / Run Production Coach Cody Atkinson is in his first season in the organization. Before joining the Reds' player development staff in January 2019, he was the head coach at Centralia College following 12 years in coaching that included stops as an assistant coach at Everett Community College, West Virginia University and the University of Texas-Rio Grande. He played baseball at Everett Community College, Centenary College of Louisiana and Corban University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology and sports administration from Lewis-Clark State College and with a master of education degree from North Central University. In his role, Atkinson will report to minor league hitting coordinator Milt Thompson. He primarily will be responsible for providing biomechanical assessments of the Reds' minor league hitters using objective measures to identify weaknesses in each hitters’ swing. Cody will also work closely with the organization's medical, strength and conditioning, analytics and sports science departments in developing systematic ways to identify areas of improvement in hitters.
