Investing in art has been treated as an alternative investment asset used to diversify the portfolio or as collateral, especially during times of uncertainty in financial markets. It should, however, be noted that certain specific features of artworks mean that investment in art cannot be compared to investment in conventional assets. In order to decide whether art is a good investment, it is necessary to estimate the expected returns that might be generated by such an investment. This requires the development of an art price index. The aim of this paper is to examine artworks as investment assets and to construct a price index of paintings made up of 17 Polish artists whose artworks were most often traded at auctions held in Poland between 2007 and 2013. In our research, we employ data on 1710 objects and apply the hedonic index methodology to estimate returns from the paintings market. Controversial Art
Controversial Art Art has always been a means through which ideas, concepts and opinions could be expressed, testing limitations in thought - naturally, a dichotomy can exist between the public and artists if their opinions differ. However, with increasing exposure to many different sources in the contemporary age, audiences are becoming desensitized to once-offensive imagery, so artists are perpetually attempting to push boundaries. While controversial art can be an effective vehicle to spark thought in the peoples (which in my opinion is the primary purpose of art), some artists seek only notoriety and exposure rather than creating the most effective possible artwork. My Bed by Tracey Emin brought to the light the schism in the art community that is based on the definition of art itself. My Bed, which was created in 1998, was an installation of the artist's unmade bed surrounded by various objects. The object of a bed itself symbolises sleep, sleeplessness, dreams, sex, and death, combining to form a turbulent still life. My Bed is a graphic depiction of depression, mental health, sex, and loneliness that shocked many. The controversy around My Bed centred around the 'vulgar' subject matter. The artwork was denounced as filthy and disgusting, due to the detritus that constitutes the artwork such as empty vodka bottles, underwear soaked with menstrual blood, stained and dirty sheets, and used condoms. These raw, sexually-imbued and frankly unhygienic elements (particularly the showing of bodily fluids) were extremely shocking. In one case, housewife Christine de Ville rushed the bed with a bottle of disinfectant to mop up what she considered to be filth. -

Young British Artists: the Legendary Group
Young British Artists: The Legendary Group Given the current hype surrounding new British art, it is hard to imagine that the audience for contemporary art was relatively small until only two decades ago. Predominantly conservative tastes across the country had led to instances of open hostility towards contemporary art. For example, the public and the media were outraged in 1976 when they learned that the Tate Gallery had acquired Carl Andre’s Equivalent VIII (the bricks) . Lagging behind the international contemporary art scene, Britain was described as ‘a cultural backwater’ by art critic Sarah Kent. 1 A number of significant British artists, such as Tony Cragg, and Gilbert and George, had to build their reputation abroad before being taken seriously at home. Tomake matters worse, the 1980s saw severe cutbacks in public funding for the arts and for individual artists. Furthermore, the art market was hit by the economic recession in 1989. For the thousands of art school students completing their degrees around that time, career prospects did not look promising. Yet ironically, it was the worrying economic situation, and the relative indifference to contemporary art practice in Britain, that were to prove ideal conditions for the emergence of ‘Young British Art’. Emergence of YBAs In 1988, in the lead-up to the recession, a number of fine art students from Goldsmiths College, London, decided it was time to be proactive instead of waiting for the dealers to call. Seizing the initiative, these aspiring young artists started to curate their own shows, in vacant offices and industrial buildings. The most famous of these was Freeze ; and those who took part would, in retrospect, be recognised as the first group of Young British Artists, or YBAs.
