JOHOR
• The State of Johor has the greatest number of landfill sites in Peninsula Malaysia. There are 24 landfills (MHLG data in Year 2002)1 but the average area for each landfill is relatively small, i.e. 4.28 hectares. The current total landfill area is 102.75 hectares. The total waste throughput for the landfills in Johor is 1,862 tonne/day2.
• Of the 24 landfill sites in Johor, only one landfill is classified at Level 3 - Bakri landfill in Muar. It has a throughput of 300 tonne/day but lifespan of only 1 year. Twelve (12) landfills (50%) are classified as open dumps.
• Several landfills were closed (closure date not stated) for reaching full capacity. One of them, Larkin landfill at Johor Bahru was the largest in Johor. Larkin landfill was 21 hectares with a throughput of 500 tonne/day. It was classified as a Level 1 landfill. Since the closure of Larkin landfill, Bakri landfill is the largest landfill in Johor, with an area of 14.7 hectares.
• There are four (4) landfills with a capacity of more than 10 hectares. Most of the others are between 2-4 hectares.
• The estimated lifespan for most of the landfills (11 out of 25) is between 1 to 5 years. Nine (9) landfills have lifespan of more the 10 years.
• The landfills which are of a greater capacity and have a longer lifespan are operated in Pasir Gudang (12 hectares, 10 years) and two landfills in Lembaga Bandaraya Johor Tenggara (8 hectares each respectively for 20 years and 15 years).
• There are three (3) landfills operated in Mersing, all of which have a lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Currently they are open dumpsites and require about RM560,000 for upgrading. The total landfill area is 13.6 hectares, meaning upgrading fees of approximately RM40,000 per hectare.
• The total estimated cost for new landfills, upgrading and closure of existing landfills requested by thirteen (13) Local Authorities was RM23.2 mil.
• Southern Waste Management Sdn. Bhd. (SWMSB) operates a landfill site in the State of Johor at Ulu Tiram, MP Johor Bahru Tengah. (Another landfill, which is operated by SWMSB, is at Krubong, Melaka.)3
• On 1 July 1999, SWMSB upgraded the Ulu Tiram landfill to accommodate an increase in waste input from 250 tonne/day to 1,000 tonne/day. The landfill is operated by cells with leachate pipes and pond, storm water drainage, fencing and liner. It is a secured area with no scavenging activities.
• The remaining life (as at December 2000) of landfill sites in the State of Johor was estimated by SWMSB and the results of its study are shown in the following table (see Figure 1 for location of landfill sites):
1 Southern Waste Management Sdn. Bhd. recorded there were 31 landfills in Johor in 2000. 2 The MHLG List of Information and Status of Waste Disposal Sites at Local Authorities before 10th March 2002. 3 Privatisation of Solid Waste Management for Southern Region of Malaysia – Technical Proposal, Southern Waste Management Sdn. MELAKA
• There are three (3) landfill sites in the State of Melaka (MHLG data in Year 2002)4.
• The largest landfill in Melaka is Masjid Tanah landfill located in Alor Gajah, having an area of 40.47 hectares with a throughput of 100 tonnes per day. However, it is an open dump and has a lifespan of only 3 years.
• The only Level 2 landfill in Melaka is Kesang Pajak landfill, Jasin which has a lifespan of 8 years. MD Jasin has requested RM1.1mil for upgrading the landfill to Level 4, if approved it will be equipped with leachate treatment and vent pipe, weighbridge, guard house and fencing.
• There were five (5) landfill sites as reported by SWMSB in December 2000. The largest landfill was Krubong in MP Melaka, which was operated by SWMSB. The remaining life (as at December 2000) of the landfills in Melaka was provided in the following table (see Figure 2 for location of landfill sites):

NEGERI SEMBILAN
• There are ten (10) landfill sites in the State of Negeri Sembilan (MHLG data in Year 2002)5, six (6) of which are open dumps. Only one landfill attains a rating of Level 2 and this is Chembong landfill (4 hectares) in Rembau.
• MD Rembau has requested for RM370,000 to repair the basic facilities at Chembong landfill.
• Total landfill area in Negeri Sembilan is 94.19 hectares. Two (2) landfill sites are relatively large, considering that Negeri Sembilan is a relatively small state. The landfills are Sg. Keru landfill (24.28 hectares) in Tampin and Pajam landfill (28.33 hectares) in Nilai. The Sg. Keru landfill has a lifespan of 100 years.
• MP Nilai has requested for RM2.5mil to upgrade the access and leachate system at Pajam landfill, which is currently at Level 1.
• The Sikamat landfill in MP Seremban has the highest throughput (300 tonne/day), but its size is relatively small (5.2 hectares) and thus has a very short lifespan (only 8 months).
• The location of landfill sites in the State of Negeri Sembilan as provided by Southern Waste Management Sdn Bhd (SWMSB) in their report, produced in 2000, is shown in Figure 3.
• The remaining life of these landfill sites as reported by SWMSB (as at December 2000) is provided as follows:

SELANGOR
• There are eleven (11) landfill sites in the State of Selangor (MHLG data in Year 2002)6, including a private landfill called Air Hitam landfill at Puchong, which is owned and operated by Worldwide-SITA Environmental Management Sdn. Bhd.
• The private landfill is receiving waste from Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Ampang Jaya, Subang Jaya and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. This is one of a few landfills in Peninsular Malaysia receiving waste from across Local Authority boundaries. The landfill has a throughput of 300 tonne per day, with an area of 20 hectares, and is classified as a Level 4 landfill.
• The Air Hitam landfill is anticipated to cease operation by late 2004 and it will be replaced by a new landfill facility in Rawang.
• Another Level 4 landfill in Selangor is Panchang Bedena landfill in Sabak Bernam which has an area of 9.6 hectares and a lifespan of 20 years. MD Sabak Bernam has requested RM 0.4mil for leachate treatment and control of fire.
• Landfills in Selangor have the highest total daily throughput (2,285 tonne/day) in Peninsular Malaysia. The throughputs in Kundang landfill (MP Selayang, 600 tonne/day), Telok Kapas landfill (MP Klang, 350 tonne/day) and Hulu Yam Bahru landfill (MD Hulu Selangor, 350 tonne/day) are particularly high.
• MP Selayang has requested for RM1.16mil to upgrade Kundang landfill which is currently at Level 1. The Telok Kapas landfill in MP Klang is only a temporary landfill for a lifespan of 1.5 years.
• Of the eleven (11) landfill sites in Selangor, none are classified as open dumps. The majority (7 landfills) are classified as Level 1.
• The location of landfill sites in the State of Selangor as provided by Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (AFSB) in their report, produced in 2000, is shown in Figure 4.
6 Alam Flora Sdn. Bhd. recorded there were 9 landfills in Selangor in 2000, including Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, but excluding Hulu Selangor.
