A powerful body of work, we will offer a closer look at the Manitoban Landscape through the lens of the contemporary artist. Dynamic in medium and with stylistic distinction, this exhibition features interpretations by 17 prominent, established and emerging Manitoba based artists. Our continuing partnership with Jeff Jeff Gasenzer of Fleet gallery also allows us to feature works from the legendary and iconic Manitoban artist, Tony Tascona. Given the long and diverse history of landscape painting, particularly in Victoria Beach, it is not surprising that many artists still dabble in the genre today. As evident in this contemporary landscape collection, many creatives have taken cues from the past to create landscape art that is both evidently inspired and highly original. We are pleased to announce our annual exhibition titled, Land, Water, Air. We invite you to experience this exception body of work Sunday August 4th from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm VB Clubhouse Cheers continued next page North 59 Artist Collective

Nonetheless, it’s still hard for the Kristie and Doug Pollard kids to wait in line, but they were as patient as always. The VB rec team had the unenviable task of picking out the best costumes for our categories. Parker Ateah, Ruby Ateah and Beauden McLeod came dressed as Rock, Scissor and Paper to win the Most Original Costume. Abi Mason was back in the winner’s circle, winning best VB-themed costume for her rendition of the Victoria Beach Sign (with taxi- “Abi the cabbie”). Olivia Yarnell, Eric Yarnell, Catriona Adamson and Lauren Adamson won the best group costume by dressing as Pelicans. Congratulations to Winston and Leah Permanand, who shared the Best Adult Costume by dressing as Robin and the Joker, to match their daughter Leah who was Batman. A special VB welcome to our youngest participant, 3-month old Mila Clayton. Mila was joined by her sister Kaiya and her cousins Grayson, Braedan and Jaelyn, who get an honourable mention for their costumes as “Tim-Bits”, helping their grandfather Tim Walker celebrate his birthday. We tried getting Tim’s attention while he played tennis, but we haven’t got word if we cost him a point or inspired him to win his match. While the kids were waiting in line, they were entertained with some small magic tricks by Ryan Price the Magician. After the costume parade, Ryan did a set of bigger tricks that had both the kids and the adults in wonder. Thanks to the Rec Staff (Andrew, Tia, Declan and Linnea) for helping us to setup, cleanup and sort out the sound system. Thanks to Fran Pollard for guiding everyone through the sign- up. Finally, thanks to all of the parents and grand-parents who helped the kids assemble their chosen costume. There is a strong connection between this great rock doc and Victoria Beach: guitarist Stephen Carroll spent his childhood summers here. In fact, many of the hours that went into making him an accomplished musician were spent at VB. “I used to play a lot of music up here,” he recalls. “It totally informed my playing, jamming around campfires and having impromptu jams.” He remembers playing a lot of tunes with friends Sean Brown and Harvey Cramp, Jr. “The unstructured time that you have with your instrument is invaluable.” Carroll’s first VB experiences were as a toddler. “My parents started renting in the ’70s,” he says. Normally, we wouldn’t go on a tour that long,” Carroll recalls. “The scale was a little bit bigger.” The documentary almost fell through because the stock market crashed the year before the tour. “We were lucky to get it made but we did it at a fraction of the budget that we started with,” Carroll says. Although there were investors early on in the planning of the documentary, MTS and Manitoba Film and Music were the only funders of the project in the end. IMDB lists the budget as $300,000 but Carroll wonders if that might be a bit high. Carroll says there was more drama on the tour than the documentary lets on. “There were seismic fights,” he reports, remembering how the three-person film crew almost cracked, since they weren’t as familiar with touring as the band members. Another thing about the documentary is how some moments fell wonderfully into place. Greg Smith gives a lesson on how to make
