Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th

Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, originated during the Civil War, when people decorated the graves of soldiers. It was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan and was first observed on May 30th, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington Cemetery.

Please take the time on this day to honor those who have died in battle and to remember loved ones who have passed away.

Older Americans Month

The 2018 theme, Engage at Every Age, emphasizes that you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities.

Each year, the month of May is proclaimed Older Americans Month throughout the nation. The Administration on Aging develops a theme for Older Americans Month and disseminates the theme to the entire aging network. Each year the President signs a proclamation regarding Older Americans Month in celebration of the achievements and contributions of the nation’s older persons.

To celebrate Older Americans Month will be having a fundraiser. We will be making pork BBQ plates and grilled chicken plates, sides will be baked beans, slaw, corn bread, cake. You ask when: May17th, 2018—plates will be ready— starting at11:00am

Plates will be $8.00 each and for combination $10.00 (both chicken and pork BBQ)

The Williams family will be cooking the pig and chicken for us, seniors (Young at Heart) will be fixing sides. Thank you and please come out to support your Pamlico County Senior Services. Call today to place your order. Beth at 252-745-7196

The program is a joint effort by Medicare and United Healthcare to provide extra benefits for people who have low in- comes (Medicaid Level) and are also on Medicare. The people who will qualify for this pro- gram are either over 65 and low income or under 65 with a disability for at least 2 years and have both Medicare and Medicaid.

There is no charges or cost to the consumer for this program. It can be a life changer for the recipients. Some of the benefits included in this program are:

Transportations services - 48 one-way trips up to 50 miles for medical or pharmacy vis- its

Dental - $1,500 benefit to use for cleanings, crowns, fillings, root canals, etc.

Vision Benefit – provides $225 in addition to what Medicaid provides for glasses or con- tacts.

Hearing Benefit - $2,500 every two years to use for hearing aids.

Health Products Catalog - $800 a year/$200 per quarter to spend in this catalog. In- cludes Items you would find in a drug store or medical supply company.

Silver Sneakers – Free gym Membership or if a gym is not close by they will send you some small equipment and provide a work-out regimen for you to do at home. (YMCA)

Nurses line – a Nurse is available for members to call 24 hours a day 7 Days. Members can call concerning their health or the health of any one in their household.

Podiatrist Visits – Not covered by Medicare or Medicaid but this plan allows 4 visits per year.

Continue to next page Personal Emergency Response system – “Help I’ve Fallen and I can’t get up” type pen- dant can even tell if person wearing it has fallen. The pendant is free and there is no cost for the monitoring. A doctor will need to notate that the patient would benefit from such a device before one will be issued to a member.

House calls – A nurse or a nurse practitioner will visit the member and spend about 45 minutes in their home to assess what type of care would best benefit the member. The nurse makes recommendations to both the member and to their primary care doctor. There will also be follow up calls to encourage the member to follow the recommenda- tions.

This is a Medicare advantage plan offered by United Healthcare. The plan has no premium or co pays. If someone has Medicare and Medicaid this plan provides several extra benefits all at no charge in addition to what they already receive from Medicare and Medicaid. The Plan is an RPPO which means the beneficiary is not limited to a network of doctors but can go where needed for services. So why doesn’t everyone with Medicare and Medicaid have this type of plan? The answer is because they are not aware of it. The plan is unique and it is brand new to your area. My job is make people aware of it and help people enroll into the plan.

The first question I usually get when I present this program to people is it seems too good to be true. This is one of those rare instances where everyone involved benefits. The Recipient gets exactly what they receive already with Medicare and Medicaid plus 10 other additional benefits. The insurance company, United Healthcare in this case, gets paid by Medicare to administer the Medicare benefits. Medicaid simply provides the benefits it already does but these benefits are supplemented by the plan. I get paid for everyone who enrolls into the plan. Doctors and Dentist can do more services for the client and receive payment for those services which they would not receive with just Medicare and Medicaid. It is truly a win-win for everyone.

The biggest challenge is finding these qualifying individuals and educating them about the pro- gram. That is where you come in. If you know of individuals who fit these criteria, please let me know and I will be happy to assist them with enrollment into the plan.

Please look at the plan details included in this booklet and share them with your clients. If your client would like to learn more about the plan I can meet with them in your facility, at their home or meet in them the location they choose. Please see below for My contact infor- mation.

Mr. Rob Leonard will be at Pamlico Senior Services on June 12, 2018 at 10:00am To talk about this, everyone is welcome to come Dear Volunteers, A lot of time and effort goes into Pamlico Senior Services to help the seniors and community. Pamlico Senior Services is doing well, but there is still so much to be done. That’s why we’re writing to request: to ask you if you could spare some time to work with us as a volunteer teacher.

There’s no special expertise required, and you don’t have to have a degree. All you need is the belief that Pamlico Senior Services is worth working for, and that volunteers are the most important part of Pamlico Senior Services. There’s a lot to do, and we need your help.

Give us a call today to Pamlico Senior Services (252-745-7196) if you would like to spend even a few hours a week as a volunteer. It’ll be one of the most fulfilling things you have ever done.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Look forward to hearing from you.

The Telephone Reassurance Program

The telephone reassurance program is designed as an extra security measure for seniors 60 and older living alone. Everyone living alone, regardless of age 60 plus or health, should have methods in place daily to alert someone in case of an accident or any other debilitating circumstances. The senior center offers this to clients 60 and older in Pamlico County Please stop by the senior center for more information or to sign up for this service. Also if you are interested in volunteering for this please come by and let us know. Thank you Beth Hardison. For more information call 745-7196.
