ABSTRACT: Ornithonyssus sylviarum is a hematophagous mite present in wild, domestic, and synanthropic birds. However, this mite can affect several vertebrate hosts, including humans, leading to dermatitis, pruritus, allergic reactions, and papular skin lesions. This study evaluated the epidemiological characteristics of O. sylviarum attacks on poultry workers, including data on laying hens, infrastructure and management of hen houses, and reports of attacks by hematophagous mites. In addition, a case of mite attack on a farm worker on a laying farm in the Midwest region in Minas Gerais is presented. It was found that 60.7% farm workers reported attacks by hematophagous mites. Correspondence analysis showed an association between reports of mite attacks in humans with (1) presence of O. sylviarum in the hen house, (2) manual removal of manure by employees, and (3) history of acaricide use.

Published with open access at www.questjournals.org ABSTRACT Introduction: One of the topical problems is allergy to home pets, viz. to cat and dog that occurs among adults at the rate of 5-15%. Aim: To choose an adequate therapy and to make the prognosis of its efficacy in patients with sensitization and clinical manifestations of allergy to cat and dog. Material and methods: 22 patients aged 16-36 have been studied. The diagnosis was verified on the basis of objective and subjective data, overall laboratory and instrumental tools, prick tests, general and specific IgE determination. The study of allergen components was made by immunofluorescence method ImmunoCAP. Results: According to the results of skin prick tests sensitization to cat was traced in 81.8% persons, of whom monosensitization was traced in 27.8%, association of cat allergens with other types of allergens – in 72.2%, most frequently this being – cat+dog. Higher levels of general ІgЕ were traced in 77.3% patients. Specific ІgЕ only to cat was traced in 16.6% ones, while the rest 83.4% of patients had specific ІgЕ to cat in the combination with different domestic allergens. Patients with major cat allergen Fel d 1 alone or in combination with minor allergen Fel d 2 were prescribed allergen immunotherapy with high/medium efficacy prognosis.

O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar as espécies de ácaros hematófagos parasitos de Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) e analisar os índices de infestação em relação ao gênero, massa corporal e comprimento total dos hospedeiros. Para isso, cada um dos 100 pardais capturados na área urbana de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, foi sexado, pesado e medido. A coleta dos ácaros foi realizada após aplicação de um talco repelente de ectoparasitos sobre o corpo das aves. Pellonyssus reedi ocorreu em 29 pardais com intensidade média de 8,37 ácaros/hospedeiro e Ornithonyssus bursa ocorreu em duas aves, somente um hospedeiro macho adulto apresentou co-infestação. A prevalência e intensidade média de infestação por P. reedi entre hospedeiros machos e fêmeas adultos não apresentou diferença significativa, também não houve correlação entre a abundância dessa espécie, massa corporal e comprimento total dos pardais.

This is the genius of the, yes, virus that America’s founders released. You can trademark an idea but you can’t keep people from having it. The ideas proliferate like a benevolent critical mass in Prez, the best new comic of the year, based on one of the craziest comics ever made. The original (by Joe Simon and Gerry Grandenetti, who are offensively uncredited so far — ideas do belong to somebody at the start), the original is one of those things that barely happens but people never forget: a youthsploitation fantasy about a hip, teenage lefty president right after the height of the counterculture of the 1960s/early-’70s. It had five issues, and four even came out, but like the promise of liberty, it’s caught fire ever since, with a beautiful, sadly utopian issue of The Sandman by Gaiman and Michael Allred reconceiving it, and a fantastic early opus by Ed Brubaker and Eric Shanower, the one-shot Smells Like Teen President, updating it for the early-1990s social malaise. Prez’s benevolent rule is a future that never happened but, in its weight upon our consciousness, never goes away. Mark Russell (not the song-and- dance Beltway satirist, even better) writes and Ben Caldwell draws the newest version, two issues in so far from “The DC You” era of revived creativity and carefully refreshed copyrights. We’re in another fantasyland, the carnivalesque dystopia of 2036, which is as recognizable to us as those who’ve held onto power all that time can manage — just bigger, jitteryer, sassier, dumber.

Use plastic covers that are designed to prevent allergens from penetrating on your mattress and pillows. Allergen-proof covers are available from medical supply outlets. Don't expect results overnight. Cat allergens are one-sixth the size of pollens, and it may take months to reduce them significantly.
