This is the season for dual, or even tri-sport days. North Tahoe’s spring skiing and riding is universally recognized as some of the best on the planet, with many resorts staying open into April and some even into May! Backcountry enthusiasts have an almost unending variety of slopes and peaks to “bag.” Slide the spring snowpack in the morning, enjoy a paddle on Lake Tahoe mid-day, then play a round of disc golf or sink a putt at golf links that open in March, just down the hill in Carson Valley. Or get some much needed relaxation in and absorb the views of snow-capped mountains, sunny skies and clear blue water from a restaurant deck or after a short hike to Eagle Rock. From May through June, fi elds of wild fl owers erupt in color under mountain peaks and along the lakeshore. In the evenings, signature family- friendly events such as WinterWonderGrass fi ll the clear air with live music and dancing. Spring in North Lake Tahoe is defi nitely a treasured season. Tahoe City was the gateway to Lake Tahoe from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, the well-to-do staying at the famous Tahoe Tavern resort or departing on steamboats to nearby lodges, marinas and estates. It’s human nature to love Tahoe in summer. To start, practically perfect weather (in every way)—low humidity, sunny days and clear, starry nights. Days are warm but not hot, nights are cool and refreshing. North Lake Tahoe boasts hundreds of miles of scenic trails through vast forests, wilderness areas and alpine lakes. Sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail around the North Shore follow crestline, peak-topping routes and provide 360-degree views. The Flume Trail is one of the mountain biking world’s most famous rides, but it’s just part of the amazing network of single-track trails found here. For long, lift-served downhills, head to Northstar California’s Mountain Bike Park. Prefer a paved route? Go for a relaxed ride on the scenic bike trail that runs along the Truckee River from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City. Power through the lake on a kayak, or glide atop the aquamarine water on a stand-up paddleboard. For a laid-back water experience, step onboard a cruise along the shoreline to Emerald Bay, or try a fishing charter on a calm morning. Rafting the Truckee River is popular with all ages. Go it alone or with the convenience of one of the rafting companies in Tahoe City. Tahoe’s blue waters offer plenty of activity, but so do Tahoe’s greens. Golf courses include relaxed 9-hole circuits in Kings Beach and Tahoe City and championship courses in Incline Village, Northstar and Squaw Valley. Additional courses in Truckee and nearby Carson Valley feature the designs of world-renowned golf architects. Whether it’s paddling along welcoming stretches of sun-soaked sand, toasting the day at a lakefront restaurant or enjoying an evening stroll under a brilliant, star-filled sky, summer days at North Lake Tahoe are much too special to be missed.
