Comparative Study of Autostereoscopic Displays for Mobile Devices
Comparative study of autostereoscopic displays for mobile devices Atanas Boev, Atanas Gotchev Department of Signal Processing, Tampere University of Technology, P. O. Box 553, FI-33101 Tampere, Finland ABSTRACT We perform comparative analysis of the visual quality of multiple 3D displays – seven portable ones, and a large 3D television set. We discuss two groups of parameters that influence the perceived quality of mobile 3D displays. The first group is related with the optical parameters of the displays, such as crosstalk or size of sweet spots. The second group includes content related parameters, such as objective and subjective comfort disparity range, suitable for a given display. We identify eight important parameters to be measured, and for each parameter we present the measurement methodology, and give comparative results for each display. Finally, we discuss the possibility of each display to visualize downscaled stereoscopic HD content with sufficient visual quality. Keywords: portable 3D displays, parallax barrier, lenticular sheet, light guide, HDDP, crosstalk, accommodation- convergence rivalry, comfort disparity range, subjective quality, downscaled stereoscopic content. 1. INTRODUCTION After the success of “Avatar 3D” movie in late 2009, twenty-eight stereoscopic movies were released in 2010, with thirty-six titles expected to come in 2011 1. The large amount of available 3D content encouraged the companies to produce 3D capable computers and television sets. In 2011, various models of mobile devices with 3D displays to are expected to become available. Examples of currently available devices with 3D displays, include a digital camera and photo frame 2 by Fujifilm, a mobile phone by Sharp 3. Novel 3D-capable devices such as a game console by Nintendo 4, mobile phones by LG 5 and HTC 6, and a tablet by LG 5 are expected in 2011. -

Smartphone Report: Gaming, Digital Music Distribution and Entertainment Opportunities 2011-2016
Smartphone Report: Gaming, Digital Music Distribution and Entertainment Opportunities 2011-2016 2.2 The Threat to Smartphone Gaming from the Nintendo 3DS The 3DS marks the first significant new handheld console release in the past 3 years. Visiongain believe the perceived threat to the continued success of game apps remains low. Smartphone gaming is popular because consumer already own the hardware required and therefore the risk and cost factors are low. In Q1 2011 Sprint introduced the HTC EVO 3D while AT&T launched the LG Thrill, a US-branded version of the international LG Optimus 3D. Both are powerful Smartphones with glasses- free 3D displays technologically similar to that used by Nintendo. Figure 2.6: Nintendo 3DS Source: Nintendo www.visiongain.com Page 39 Smartphone Report: Gaming, Digital Music Distribution and Entertainment Opportunities 2011-2016 2.2.1 3DS Price Slash In Q3 2011, Nintendo took the decision to dramatically cut the cost of the 3DS from ¥25,000 (around $400) to ¥15,000 (around $240) following disappointing sales figures - price cuts that were also mirrored in the UK, US and other countries. Early numbers from Japan suggest the tactic has certainly done the trick, with sales of the Nintendo 3DS soaring to reach their second highest rate. According to Japanese publisher Enterbrain, 214,821 units were sold during the week leading up to August 14th. The sales figures mean the Nintendo 3DS experienced its second most popular week since its launch in February, when it sold 371,326 in seven days. Information on whether the price drops in the UK, which saw as much as £80 taken off the price, have produced similar surges in sales is not yet available. -

O. Zymovets, Teacher Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University USING GOOGLE APPLICATIONS IN THE PROCESS OF PROSPECTIVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Nowadays using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an urgent necessity in teaching process. Various educational programs on CD-ROMs, Internet recourses, authoring tools, online tests and other electronic materials help FL teachers to make lessons more exciting, modern, interactive and efficient. That is why a modern FL teacher should possess the skills connected with using ICT in the classroom as well as other fundamental professional skills: cognitive, project, constructive, organizational and communicative [1, p. 151]. The formation of prospective FL teachers’ professional skills can be performed in the process of studying various academic disciplines at the university such as Methods of Teaching English, Practical Course of the English Language, English Language (for professional purposes), etc. Taking into account the fact that ICT is one of the effective means of forming professional skills, we think it necessary to integrate ICT into the university courses mentioned above. The aim of the article is to describe the benefits of using such means of ICT as Google Applications (Apps) in the process of prospective FL teachers’ professional training. First, it should be noted that there are a lot of Google products that can be used in all spheres of human life including everyday activities, education, business, communication, rest, etc. Google products include web apps (Web search, Bookmarks, Google Chrome), specialized search apps (Custom Search, Trends, Scholar), home & office apps (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Drawings, Calendar, Hangouts, Sheets, Forms, Sites, Translate, Drive), social apps (Google+, Groups, Blogger), geo apps (Maps, Earth), media apps (Books, News, Image Search, Video Search), business apps (G Suite, AdMob, AdSense) and Mobile apps (Mobile, Search for mobile, Maps for mobile) [2]. -
