Weardale Museum at High House Chapel
Our Museum recreates a typical Weardale cottage of about 1870, telling the story of lead-miners and their families. The adjoining Methodist Chapel, built in 1760, is the oldest purpose built chapel in continuous weekly use since its foundation.
We offer a comprehensive family history resource about ancestors from Stanhope and Wolsingham parishes.
Our resources are particularly attractive to the over 50s and for organised community groups a talk is provided at no extra cost.
We open at Easter and other Bank Holidays and then:
1 May - 30 October, Wednesday until Sunday. July - August every afternoon 1.30pm - 4.30pm.
We will open at any time for organised groups so if you think you have a group who would enjoy the trip, get in touch!

Local Offer Local Offer Parking is behind the museum, but visitors description can be dropped off at the door.
The museum is a four room cottage with the upper floor accessed by stairs with a bannister. Access for wheelchair users to the two downstairs rooms is provided from the door by the main road and we can remove furniture to improve the experience. Our upstairs displays including the Weardale Tapestry can be viewed in our large books and on our specially designed iPad displays.
There are a number of chairs sited around the building for visitors to take a rest.
Staff will do all they can to assist those with SEND capabilities and it is helpful if we know beforehand.
