Comparator Comparison

Comparator

International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering

Explanation as to why conference is superior to comparator: CAiSE is a conference without a coherent focus; for example in 2019 it had papers on development methods, on business process models, on data models, on recommender systems, on machine learning, on security, on applications. For each of these topics, there are multiple stronger focused places where the better work appears. In contrast, ICDT is a focused forum where participants share a common approach and interest, and so attending ICDT provides a valuable experience with excellent feedback and opportunities for new collaborations. The stronger citation metrics of CAiSE are natural from the number of people who are in business process modelling and services (two communities with very high citation patterns); while theory papers have fewer citations, the work is deep and important. Comparator

International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering

Explanation as to why conference is superior to comparator: There doesn’t seem to be a strong community that participates regularly in WISE; even many of the PC members (and several of the PC Chairs) don’t typically publish often in the conference. WISE is a conference without a coherent focus; for example in 2019 it had sessions on blockchain, on machine learning, on entity linkage, on data mining, on applications. For each of these topics, there are multiple stronger focused places where the better work appears. It is is not good that WISE proceedings include many short papers interspersed with full papers (and not distinguished unless one carefully counts the pages); if these 10-page short papers were included in counting, the acceptance rate would be much higher. As well, my experience (from students who had papers published there) is that the reviewing does not require papers to have convincing evaluation of the ideas; it seems quite feasible to publish work that describes an innovative idea and a case study of its operation, but without the careful argument expected elsewhere to show that this is actually a better way of doing things than the alternatives. Other Relvant Info

Other relevant information: [Technical issue with this submission: the information about acceptance rate for ICDT 2017 and 2018 is not actually in the proceedings front matter; only the number of accepted papers is given there. I got the number of submissions (which I entered in the form) by personal email from Wim Martens, the chair of the ICDT Council] The database community clearly sees ICDT and EDBT as having equal esteem; for more than a decade now they are always colocated, and the theory subcommunity is valued greatly.

8 Registrants are entitled to attend the talks from both conferences equally, which would not make sense if ICDT was seen as lower in quality. Three of the seven-member ICDT Council (ie Steering Committee) are Associate Editors of ACM TODS (the leading journal of the database field). Several members of the ICDT community (Abiteboul, Fagin, Vardi) have been honoured by the Edgar Codd Innovation Award, the highest recognition for technical contributions among the whole database community. In the past 5 years, of the Research Highlights chosen from the whole of the database community by SIGMOD, 8% (3 out of 35) have come from PODS.
