2001 Baseball Game-by-Game Recaps May 19, vs. East Texas Baptist University MVNC, the second seed, dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to fifth-seeded East Texas Baptist in the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. The Tigers claimed the win with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars did not record a hit in the game as they were no-hit for the first time since March 26, 1999. Adam Rowe (8-4) suffered the loss as he allowed eight hits, two walks, and four runs in 6 2/3 innings of work with five strikeouts. For their efforts, Rowe and Mark Coulter were named to the NCCAA All-National Tournament Team. May 19, vs. Greenville (IL) College The rain finally subsided as the second-seeded Cougars played their first game of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament and eliminated ninth-seeded Greenville 3-1. Mark Coulter (9-3) worked six-plus innings to pick up the victory as he allowed just four hits, two walks, and one run with five strikeouts. Jon Barchus recorded the final three outs for his fifth save as Nate Overholt made a diving catch in leftfield with two outs and two runners on to end the game. Offensively, Jeff Wine led off the game with a solo home run, and Mike Waddell tied the single-season school record with his 21st double. The win was also the 400th in Coach Keith Veale's 12-year career - all at MVNC. May 12, vs. Ohio Dominican College For the third straight year, MVNC finished just one win away from a region title as the second-seeded Cougars fell 6-1 to third-seeded Ohio Dominican in the championship game of the NAIA Region IX Tournament. Mark Coulter (8-3) suffered the loss as he allowed 14 hits and six runs over nine innings with five strikeouts. MVNC managed just four hits in the game with Mike Waddell's first-inning triple plating the team's only run of the game. May 11, vs. Ohio Dominican College The second-seeded Cougars suffered their first loss of the double elimination NAIA Region IX Tournament as MVNC fell 10-6 to third-seeded Ohio Dominican in a game that featured two rain delays totaling 2 1/2 hours. Jason Irish (3-4) suffered the loss as he allowed 13 hits and nine runs over five-plus innings. Tim Saunders worked the final three innings and gave up four hits and one run. Irish led the offensive attack with three hits, while Jeff Wine and Josh Sichina finished with two hits apiece. May 11, at Point Park (PA) College Second-seeded MVNC remained unbeaten in the NAIA Region IX Tournament as the Cougars eliminated top-seeded Point Park 6-1 to advance to within one win of the region title. Adam Rowe (8-3) earned the victory as he scattered seven hits and four walks over nine innings as he went the distance with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, Justin Clarey paced the offense by going 4-for-4 with his sixth homer of the season. Jason Hall and Mike Waddell also added a pair of hits each. May 10, vs. Shawnee State University The second-seeded Cougars became the only remaining unbeaten team in the double elimination NAIA Region IX Tournament with a 7-4 victory over fourth-seeded Shawnee State, the defending region champs. Mike Waddell (6-1) scattered 10 hits, three walks, and four runs over eight-plus innings to notch the win. Jon Barchus recorded his fourth save of the season as he registered the final three outs. Offensively, Waddell, Jeff Wine, Jason Hall, Mark Coulter, and Justin Clarey each recorded two hits as part of the 14-hit attack. Wine also tied the single-season school record with his eighth triple of the year. May 9, vs. Walsh University MVNC, the second seed, opened up play in the NAIA Region IX Tournament with an 10-1 victory over fifth-seeded Walsh. The Cougars scored nine runs in their final two at bats to break open a 1-1 game. Mark Coulter (8-2) picked up the victory as he worked all nine innings and gave up just six hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts. Meanwhile, Mike Waddell paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Coulter and Jason Hall also added two hits apiece. May 4, at Malone College The Cougars dropped an 8-5 decision to Malone as the Pioneers swept the best-of-three series to win the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region title. April 28, at Mount Union College MVNC posted a 6-3 non-conference victory at Mount Union in the first game of a doubleheader. Adam Rowe (7-2) picked up the victory as he allowed just three hits, two walks, and three runs over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Meanwhile, Jason Hall paced the offense by going 2-for-4. Mark Coulter, Mike Waddell, and Jason Irish also added a double apiece. April 26, at Malone College The Cougars suffered their fourth straight doubleheader split as MVNC dropped a hard-fought 9-8 decision in nine innings at Malone in the second game of an American Mideast Conference twinbill. Jon Barchus (3-3) suffered the loss in relief as he allowed seven hits, one walk, and two runs over 3 2/3 innings with six strikeouts. Mike Waddell started and worked five-plus innings and gave up five hits, three walks, and seven runs with five strikeouts. Waddell also led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a home run, while Jason Irish added three hits. April 26, at Malone College MVNC scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to post a come-from-behind 8-7 victory at Malone in the first game of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader. MVNC managed just five hits in the game with Joel Laslo collecting the team's only extra base hit with a triple. On the mound, Jason Irish (2- 3) was the hard-luck loser as he scattered nine hits and three runs over seven innings with four strikeouts. April 24, TIFFIN UNIVERSITY MVNC scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-1 win over Tiffin in the first game of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader. Jason Irish and Justin Clarey each had three hits as part of the 12-hit attack, while Mike Waddell added two hits and drove in four runs. Waddell (5-1) also earned the victory on the mound as he scattered seven hits, three walks, and five runs over five innings. Adam Rowe allowed just one hit and one walk over the final two innings for his first save.
