First Generation

1. Joseph Warburton was born about 1767, died in 1844 in Torkington, Cheshire aged about 77, and was buried on 8 Mar 1844 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire. General Notes: No reliable baptism has been identified for Joseph. There are possibles at Manchester Cathedral and Ashton- Under-Lyne, based on his census age, but these are too late for his age at burial.

Also there is no marriage for Joseph and Sarah which, given Sarah’s age at death, must have been close to the birth of their first child. The only marriage that fits on date was in Malpas.

Joseph’s children include some conjecture. There are baptisms for the children of his first marriage, and for Martin and Sarah at Marple. No baptisms can be found for Thomas and James, and their marriage records don’t include their father’s name. They were, however, born in Torkington on censuses. There is a baptism for Samuel but none for Ellis, Charles, or Hannah though they are living at home in the 1841 census and Ellis and Hannah’s father is named as Joseph on their marriages.

Finally Peter was baptised at Stockport but his parents are given as John and Hannah of Torkington. There is no other evidence of John and Hannah. Peter calls his youngest son Ellis, the same as Joseph and Hannah’s youngest son, and he is a collier like many of Joseph’s sons. It is therefore presumed that Peter’s baptism record is in error and his father should be Joseph.

Joseph is described as a weaver on the baptisms of Sarah and Samuel.

Joseph was 77 years old on his burial record. Noted events in his life were: • He appeared on the census in 1841 in Torkington, Cheshire. Joseph (72) is a labourer living with Hannah (66), Charles (20) a coal miner, Hannah (16) a reeler of cotton, Ellis (26) a coal miner, Mary (22), and grandchildren David (2), and Margaret (2 mths), the children of his son Ellis. Son Martin is living with, or next door to Joseph. Joseph married Sarah. Sarah was born about 1774, died in 1795 aged about 21, and was buried on 1 May 1795 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire. General Notes: Sarah was buried aged 21. Children from this marriage were: + 2 M i. John Warburton was born in 1791 in Marple, Cheshire, was christened on 11 Sep 1791 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire, died in 1849 in Torkington, Cheshire aged 58, and was buried on 5 Sep 1849 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire. 3 F ii. Mary Warburton was born in 1792 in Marple, Cheshire, was christened on 11 Nov 1792 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire, died in 1794 aged 2, and was buried on 16 Nov 1794 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire. General Notes: Mary was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah of Torkington on her burial record. + 4 M iii. Joseph Warburton was born in 1794 in Torkington, Cheshire, was christened on 24 Aug 1794 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire, died in 1865 in Norbury, Cheshire aged 71, and was buried on 2 Feb 1865 in Norbury, St Thomas, Cheshire. Joseph next married Hannah Marsland on 29 Aug 1796 in Stockport, St Mary, Cheshire. Hannah was born about 1775, died in 1848 in Torkington, Cheshire aged about 73, and was buried on 19 Mar 1848 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire. General Notes: Hannah was 73 years old on her burial record. Children from this marriage were: + 5 M i. Martin Warburton was born in 1797 in Torkington, Cheshire, was christened on 15 Oct 1797 in Marple, All Saints, Cheshire, died in 1880 in Torkington, Cheshire aged 83, and was buried on 19 Jun 1880 in Norbury, St Thomas, Cheshire. 6 F ii. Sarah Warburton was born in 1800 in Torkington, Cheshire and was christened on 12 Mar 1800 in Poynton, St George, Cheshire. General Notes: Sarah is believed to be the one who married John Tymm based on the fact she named her eldest son Ellis. She is 40 in the 1841 census, but by 1851 she is widowed and living with Ellis in Macclesfield. Her place of birth is given as Macclesfield and her age as 54 so there must be some doubt this is the correct marriage. There is the death of a Sarah Tymms registered at Macclesfield in 1854, age unknown, and she is not in the 1861 census.

General Notes: Although Peter’s parents are described as John and Hannah, it is believed this is a mistake and his father was Joseph. This is because there is no evidence of other children of John and Hannah, and no satisfactory marriage. However there are a number of baptisms of children of Joseph and Hannah of Torkington, and a corresponding marriage at Stockport. Also Peter calls his youngest son Ellis, the same as Joseph and Hannah’s youngest son (i.e. his brother), and he is a collier like many of Joseph’s sons.
