for the Baltic, Atlantic, Macaronesian, Mediterranean & Black Sea marine biogeographical regions

13 – 15 November 2018

Hotel Iberostar Cristina, Palma,

WELCOME!

The Natura 2000 biogeographical process includes seminars, workshops and cooperation activities aimed at enhancing the effective implementation, management, monitoring and financing of the Natura 2000 network. The process assists Member States and key stakeholders to collaborate and manage Natura 2000 sites as a coherent ecological network. Working at the biogeographical level makes it easier to conserve species and habitat types under similar natural conditions and pressures across a suite of countries, irrespective of political and administrative boundaries.

The second Natura 2000 marine biogeographical seminar follows on from the first seminar held in St Malo, France in 2015 1. It covers all five of the EU’s marine biogeographical regions and happens at the time when Member States, while filling any site designation gaps, are actively working on the design and implementation of conservation measures in Natura 2000 sites to fulfil their specific conservation objectives and thus make a significant contribution to reaching the overall objectives of the Birds and Habitats Directives – the favourable conservation status of protected habitats and species.

The second marine seminar is therefore organised around three important themes, which will be explored by application to selected habitats and species in the context of regional seas: Theme 1: Setting conservation objectives at site, national and regional levels Theme 2: Setting favourable reference values (FRVs) Theme 3: Developing conservation measures to achieve the conservation objectives

The seminar will be held at the same time and place as the MedPAN 2 regional experience-sharing workshop on “Mediterranean Challenges for Marine Protected Areas and Small Scale Fisheries”, allowing for a joint opening session, dinner and exchange of information between the participants.

The seminar is kindly hosted by the Balearic government and the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition, through Fundación Biodiversidad 3, an organisation founded by the Government of in 1998 to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. At present, the Foundation is implementing a major EU LIFE integrated project, IP INTEMARES 4 which aims to establish a consolidated network of marine spaces of the Natura 2000 network, managed efficiently, with the active participation of the sectors involved and with research as a basic tool for decision-making.

For more information on this seminar and to find relevant background documents, see the Natura 2000 Communication Platform. 5
