  • Leviathan Mr Stirling Tuckey Tells of the Era of “Leviathan”, a Cargo Vessel That Worked Between Fremantle and Mandurah
Leviathan Mr Stirling Tuckey tells of the era of “Leviathan”, a cargo vessel that worked between Fremantle and Mandurah. Black Bess There would be only a handful of people in the township of Mandurah today who would remember the Leviathan. Most of them would remember her as “Black Bess” or just plain Wilson’s boat, but she and her builder deserve to take a place in the early history of Mandurah for it was the venture of an old man, helped by his two sons, who worked hard for many long hours, days, months and even years, barely existing at times for lack of money or even food, to accomplish a purpose. This was to provide for Mandurah a seagoing vessel to carry cargo to and from Fremantle and help put Mandurah on the map. Well do I remember the day when she was launched! The chocks were knocked from beneath her hull and with quite some persuasion she slid down into the creek barely deep enough for her to float. From the “big bridge” she looked immense. She must have been the biggest ship ever to be within the Mandurah bar. 3 PINJARRA Road Mandurah, Western Australia | T: (08) 9550 3681 | E: [email protected] Leviathan Continued Fremantle to Mandurah Before the Great War the only means of transport between Fremantle and Mandurah was by sea (cargo only) or rail to Pinjarra and then by horse and coach or some other form of horse transport to the township. The road to Fremantle was for the greater part a track through the sand, except for patches of stony outcrop for miles north of Mandurah.

  • Osborne Park Hosptial, Perth, Western Australia
Pathway to Excellence® Case Study: Osborne Park Hospital, Perth, Western Australia Established in 1962, Osborne Park Hospital (OPH) provides comprehensive specialist health care services to patients and families throughout Western Australia (WA). The 150-bed facility features three main clinical areas: rehabilitation and aged care, surgical services, and women’s and newborn services. Several years ago, nursing leaders sought new ways to revitalize the hospital’s mature workforce, motivate and engage younger nurses, and validate the exceptional work of the nursing staff. ANCC’s Pathway to Excellence Program offered the perfect vehicle to achieve these goals. The journey gave OPH the opportunity to benchmark against international norms and positively transform the practice environment. In addition, the prospect of being the first Australian hospital with the Pathway to Excellence designation was very motivating. In 2014, OPH became the first hospital in Australia and the second hospital outside of the United States to earn the Pathway credential. The achievement led to several significant quality and safety improvements. A nurse-driven hand hygiene compliance campaign focused on improving the hospital’s handwashing rate over a two-year period. Strategies included staff education, a new jewelry and nail policy, regular updates via newsletter, notice boards and competitions, and targeting staff groups with low compliance rates. As a result, the hospital’s hand hygiene compliance rate improved from 55% to more than 88%, significantly above the Australian national average of 72%. OPH is regularly among the top-performing hospitals in WA for hand hygiene and recently received the WA Health Award in the Performance Improvement Category.

PHOTO REQUIRED Frederick W. Burwell (courtesy xx xx) Frederick William Burwell (1846-1915) was born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to Frederick Charles Burwell and Margaret Allan Ross. Unfortunately Frederick senior died in the same year as the birth of his son. F.W. Burwell served his articles with James Matthews (1820-1898) in Scotland before migrating to the southern Dominions, arriving at Melbourne in 1869, aged 23, and subsequently moving to New Zealand. He first established a practice in Queenstown, then moving to Invercargill in 1874, where his practice thrived. The New Zealand Historic Places Trust notes that “Burwell is noted for designing many buildings in Invercargill, which transformed the centre of the town in the 1870s. Once established in Invercargill he began designing elegant two and three-storey buildings, in the Renaissance style. In Dee Street almost all the buildings were designed by him, including the hospital. 'The Crescent' was another notable streetscape created by Burwell.” Frederick Burwell was elected a Fellow of RIBA in 1880, proposed by (later Sir) Robert W. Edis, John Norton, and his uncle David Ross. Ross had also studied under James Matthews, the two architects had both migrated to New Zealand, and Ross had been made FRIBA in 1879 - with Edis and Norton as proposers. Burwell moved to Hawthorn, Victoria and was listed in practice in Collins Street, Melbourne from c.1888 until 1894. A cursory examination of tender notices suggests Burwell undertook a significant number of multiple residential projects in and around Melbourne in this period. Fred married the much younger Annie Sunderland Bateman (1868-1942) at Hobart, Tasmania on 30 April 1891.
