Guide to the Expertise Directory

This directory is the third in a series designed to assist the public in finding information about water in Arizona. Volume I, Where to Get Free (Or Almost Free) Information About Water in Arizona guides the reader to agencies and organizations throughout the state with various kinds of water information. Where to Get Technical Information About Water in Arizona provides guidance for the technical user about information sources such as data bases and specialized libraries.

This publication provides basic information about 201 people at the three Arizona state universities with expertise in water-related areas. The areas covered include , , agricultural economics, flood control, water law, water pollution and many other fields. All information was gathered by surveying the relevant departments at the three universities (including Cooperative Extension). All information provided here is as reported by the respondents. The information is provided in very abbreviated form to keep the publication to a manageable size.

Chapter One lists experts alphabetically, providing basic information about those individuals, including university addresses and phone numbers, areas of expertise, geographical specialties, special language proficiencies and any other information.

Chapter Two lists general areas of water expertise, with the names of researchers in each of these areas listed alphabetically. The reader who finds a list of names on the desired area of water expertise may then refer to Chapter One for more information about each individual. Chapter Three lists specific keywords, with the names of researchers in each of those specialties listed alphabetically. The reader who finds a list of names for those specialties may then refer to Chapter One for more information about the individual.

Chapter Four has two sections: (1) Geographic Areas, a listing of geographic areas of expertise, with researchers knowledgeable about those areas listed alphabetically, and (2) Languages, a listing of special language skills, also with researchers listed alphabetically. The reader may then refer to Chapter One for more information about those individuals.

HOW TO USE THE DIRECTORY

If you were trying to locate a hydrologist, for example, with expertise about water harvesting and irrigation in deserts of the Middle East who speaks German, you would check in Chapter Two under Hydrology and Chapter Three under the two keywords "water harvesting" and "irrigation." You would then see if any of the individuals listed also were listed in Chapter Four under "Middle East" in the geographic section and "German" under the language section. This search would lead you to Sol Resnick. Chapter One reveals his university, phone number and other information. You would also note that he is a "Director Emeritus" and thus not a full time university employee.

All of this information is available in searchable format on the WRRC Web Site http://ag.arizona.edu/AZWATER/. This site supports complex search queries, and direct Email hyperlinks to experts. It is updated as new information becomes available.

PREFACE TO THE 1998 EDITION

This edition is completely revised. Thirty-eight new entries have been added, while ten have been eliminated as people joined or left the university system, or expressed an interest in being included. For additional information, consult the Web site for each university. Many water-related departments have Web sites, accessible through the main campus sites: [email protected] (Arizona State University); [email protected] (Northern Arizona University); and [email protected] (University of Arizona).

vi Chapter One Alphabetical Listing

This chapter is the basic reference tool for all succeeding chapters. Experts are listed alphabetically and the listing provides basic information about each individual, including name and position, campus address and phone number, and gives information about areas of expertise, geographic specialties and language proficiency.

Where a category is not listed for an individual, that person did not provide information about that subject. For example, many individuals do not list any special foreign language proficiency or specific area of geographic expertise. Most individuals, however, are assumed to have knowledge of Arizona matters even if not explicity stated. Web sites listed are those where the reader may find additional information about the individual and his/her subject.

114 CHAPTER FOUR Geographic Areas and Languages

This chapter lists individuals under two types of categories:

• areas of geographic expertise, and • areas of special language proficiency.

Refer to Chapter One for more information about the individuals listed. Some individuals not listing special areas of geographic expertise specialize in topics mainly applicable to the American Southwest. Individuals who did not list a special foreign language proficiency may have some knowledge of a foreign language but may not speak it fluently.
