Ariccia, originally called "Riccia" or "La Riccia" has ancient origin. As well as all the cities, the first inhabitants of these area fought hardly to gain their independence. It is famous the battle of Aricia (late VI century BC) in which the Latin League, whose chief city was Aricia, crushed the hegemonic ambitions of Etruscan to conquer the southern . The population also fought against Rome, before being subjected to it in the IV century BC. Aricia became one of the most important Roman communities and a favourite holiday destination due to its unique geographical position halfway between two volcanic lakes, Albano Lake and Nemi Lake.

During the Middle Ages the town disappeared gradually and only in 1473, under the rule of the Savelli family, reborn. The feud was purchased in the XVII century by the Chigi family and was completely redesigned by the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his best collaborators, such as Carlo Fontana. Since 1700 Ariccia became a destination for the most important artists and writers of the time: its heyday was between the second half of the XVII century and the beginning of the next century, when there were the most active decorators, artists and writers of the moment.

During the XIX century the urban structure of Ariccia changed deeply when the route of Via Appia was modified by Pope Pius IX who, in 1854, built the bridge that surmonted the forest where the road went up to the hill of Galloro. Ariccia today is one of the most famous and popular locations of the Castelli Romani area thanks to its historical and archaeological sites and monuments, such as Palazzo Chigi, the works of Bernini, the Museum of the Roman Baroque, the Collegiate Church of the Assumption and the famous monumental viaduct.
