Volunteers 8BE. guide the students through the experiments (optoelectronics and medicine, sound and resonance, light scattering and colours, oil and viscous liquids) and make sure everyone gets to be involved through hands on experience. You’d be asked to oversee an experiment for the day. We send you all the background material in advance and on the morning of an event you receive full training on the Lab. We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one full school day, but you are welcome to come along for as many days as you like. In return you’ll have a rewarding and unforgettable experience, receive some IOP freebies and also be awarded affiliate membership to the Institute of Physics for a year. 28 and 29 January Careers Option Event Year 9 *NEW “Our Future, Our Choice” 2014 for all Blackpool 1000 students This year’s event will be at the Pleasure Beach, where it will be divided into zones 9 am – 3 pm Schools – across 3 rooms, each representing different sectors of learning and employment Pleasure Beach and student groups will spend around 30 minutes in each area. This gives them Blackpool opportunities to chat informally with education and business representatives, finding out more about the sectors and the skills and qualifications they need. The core aims of the event are to ensure our young people understand the link between success in school and future careers and the importance of developing key employability skills valued by employers and educational institutions alike. STEMFirst are having a 'STEM stand' at the Blackpool careers convention in January 2014 and as always this will be a fantastic careers event for Blackpool Year 9 students.

November or St Bede’s High School 160 students Product Development Talk December 2013 Lytham St Bede's are looking for someone to come and talk to their Year 9 pupils about design/ product development. They are looking for anything 'new' and 'techy' that can inspire their students! Do you have a presentation / short film or something suitable to show what you do? There are 160 students in the year group and the school would like someone who can either speak to all their students at once or to repeat a short session with smaller groups of students. Pupils will work on a series of challenges (earning points for their house teams) as follows:- 1. STEM Challenge Design & Build a ‘vehicle’ out of recycled items that will safely transport eggs down a ramp and travel some distance.

2. ICT Challenge Design and produce a ‘Digital Safety’ poster and presentation (video, animation...)

3. Arts & Technology Challenge Pupils will produce one of each of the following; • photographs • Either an animations or a film.

4. Physical Challenge House teams will compete in a ‘Christmas Olympics’ of unusual team activities.

Chorley 200 We have split the day into 5 x 1 hour sessions and I was hoping to invite a few STEM ambassadors to the event. What we would like is them to have a presentation and question and answer session or a practical session, something to raise the importance, mainly of maths, in future careers.

We can be totally flexible on what you can do in that hour, but we did want it to be STEM related. If you have any good STEM activities that only take an hour or ambassadors who want to run something, we need the help!

It is called the "Florence Nightingale Day", as last year, and its aim is the promotion of mathematics and especially women in maths. The formula remains the same: the 1-day event comprises a few short talks (about 15-20' each, ideally, topics at the speakers' discretion), a maths contest and much room for informal discussions over a buffet lunch and information stands. I would like to invite 1 or 2 STEM ambassadors for the day for a talk. Feedback from last year was excellent and the participants were very keen to see how many opportunities there are with a maths degree. I sincerely hope that you will help me again this year. Certainly, all would be delighted of having a STEM ambassador speak at the event. At present, I am only asking for availability and willingness to be part of the Florence Nightingale Day 2014, and if so, then further details will follow in due time. Of course, all your expenses (travel and subsistence) for the day would be covered by the event's funds.

November 2013 Lancaster Girls X 4 A Level Mentors Required for GOLD Crest Awards onwards Grammar School Students We are linking with 4 students from Lancaster Girls for them to undertake their Gold CREST projects. This is a large project and requires the girls to have a mentor who can provide some support / direction. Requirements from the Ambassadors are to have an initial chat with the students and then keep in contact via emailing through school to support, advise and give some real context. The students have now decided on the topics for their Gold Crest projects they are: 1. 787 aircraft and associated battery problems 2. Future design of submarines possibly the propulsion and or detection systems. 3. Electronics in contact lenses, similar to google glasses. Micro or nano technology. 4. transparent electronics, displays and holograms If you would like to support any of these projects please let us know (and please specify which one!) 18th December Year 9 Carnforth High School - Careers Afternoon 12- 3 pm Carnforth are holding their careers afternoon on December 18th ( exact timings TBC). Near Preston groups Carr Hill are planning for national science week 2014and want to have about 20 – 30 ambassadors who work in the science industry to come in for “ speed dating” with students.

The students will go into the hall and have a certain amount of time to ask the Ambassadors questions in in order to try and work out what they do!

ANYONE involved in medical sciences!) I would be really interested to involve anyone who loves their job but hadn't heard of it when they were at school. December 2013 St Johns C of E Great Group Size 30 Computing in Primary Schools - Robotics Trial Harwood The Royal Academy of Engineering is piloting a programme of Computing in Primary Schools, one element of which is a low-cost programmable robot. This is based around a Or programmable microprocessor controlling a pair of electric motors mounted to a lightweight chassis. The robot can be programmed to move under its own power and is Waddington and west influenced by the signals from a wide range of sensors. Bradford Primary The Academy is donating robots to schools involved in the pilot. The robots will be supplied Near Clitheroe in kit form, and teachers will be expected to build the robot as part of the trial, which has been designed for teachers with minimal knowledge of computing. A number of teachers have requested the support of a STEM Ambassador with a background in Computer Science to help them with this.
