Kimono Blocks 1. Paper piece the shapes on the bodice pattern in numerical order using L, B and E fabric pieces.

2. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (8) L 1-3/4” squares.

3. Lay (1) L square on lower left corner of (1) B 3-1/4” x 3-3/4” rectangle. Sew along the drawn line. Trim the fabric 1/4” from the stitching as indicated by the solid line. Press the L piece open to com- plete left sleeve. Repeat to sew (1) L square to lower right corner of (1) B 3-1/4” x 3-3/4” rectangle to make right sleeve.

4. Sew the sleeves to the sides of the bodice to make the upper kimono unit. Step 1 Step 3 Step 4

5. Sew (1) B 2-3/8” x 8-1/4” rectangle to (1) E 1” x 8-1/4” strip. Sew (1) B 8-1/4” x 1-3/8” rectangle to opposite edge of E strip to complete kimono skirt unit.

6. Sew (1) K 3-3/4 x 2” rectangle to top of kimono skirt unit.

7. Paper piece the shapes on the left and right obi sash patterns in numerical order using K and L fabric pieces. Step 5 Step 6 Step 7

8. Sew obi sash units to the sides of the kimono/skirt unit to make the lower kimono unit.

9. Sew the upper kimono unit to the lower kimono unit matching seams. Block should measure 10-1/4” x 12-1/2” including seam allowance. Make 1. Step 8 Step 9 Block 1

10. Following steps 1-9, make 3 additional kimono blocks using the fabrics indicated. Make 1 each.

Fan Block Note: Mark the center of the curved edges by folding the piece in half and finger pressing the fold. 11. Align the center of the inner curve of (1) K fan center template and the curved edge of (1) B fan corner template and then pin the centers together. Pin the ends together. Ease the curves along the seamline and pin about every 1/2”.

13. Align the center of the inner curve of (1) L background template and the curved edge of (1) K fan center template and then pin the centers together. Pin the ends together. Ease the curves along the seamline and pin about every 3/4”.

14. Carefully and slowly sew along the seamline. Make 2. Fan block should measure 5-5/8” square including seam allowance.

16. Repeat steps 11-14 to make Fan Blocks as shown below. Make the number of blocks indicated.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT 17. Sew (2) E 1-3/4” x 10-1/4” sashing strips together alternating with (3) H 1-3/4” squares to make a sashing row. Make 3.

18. Arrange the (2) kimono blocks in 2 rows, following the quilt layout on page 7. Sew the blocks together alternating with (3) E 1-3/4” x 12-1/2” strips to make the block rows.

19. Sew the block rows and the sashing rows together matching seams.

20. Sew (1) A 1-3/4” x 28-1/4” border to sides of quilt. Sew (2) A 1-3/4” x 26-1/4” borders to top and bottom of quilt.

21. Arrange the fan blocks as shown on the quilt layout. Note the orientation of each block. Sew (6) blocks together to make the side borders using a generous 1/4” seam allowance. Borders should measure 5-5/8” x 30-3/4”. Sew (1) fan border to opposite sides of the quilt.

22. Sew (5) fan blocks together to make the center top and bottom border using a scant 1/4” seam allowance so the piece measures 26-1/4” wide. Add the (2) end blocks with L backgrounds to the ends of the borders. Sew to the top and the bottom of the quilt.

23. Sew (1) A 1-3/4” x 41” border to the sides of the quilt. Sew (2) A 1-3/4” x 39” borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.

24. Sew (1) C 3-1/2” x 43-1/2” border to the sides of the quilt. Sew (2) C 3-1/2” x 45” borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.

25. Sew (1) E 1-3/4” x 49-1/2” border to the sides of the quilt. Sew (2) H 1-3/4” squares to ends of (2) E 1-3/4” x 45” borders. Sew to top and bottom of quilt.
