Bray ABSTRACT In the context of climate change and increasing vulnerability to catastrophe across the globe, this dissertation investigates the political, historical, and cultural stakes of disasters in Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Haiti from the nineteenth century to the present. In so doing, it examines how Caribbean writers respond to the political and social challenges that disasters pose using methodologies from literary criticism, cultural studies, and historical analysis. Attending closely to representation, textuality, and shifting historical contexts, this study analyzes major works by French, Martinican, Guadeloupean, and Haitian writers including Voltaire, Victor Schœlcher, Aimé Césaire, Maryse Condé, and Yanick Lahens alongside other primary sources like travelogues and administrative reports. Developed across four chapters, it makes three significant contributions to Caribbean studies while illuminating theoretical discussions in postcolonial studies, ecocriticism, and disaster studies. First, it underscores the role that the continual risk of natural catastrophe has played in Caribbean history and thought. Second, this project demonstrates how Francophone writing since the Haitian Revolution (1791- 1804) has refashioned catastrophe into a valuable critical framework for reconsidering the Caribbean from within and without. Third, it reveals how this “literature of catastrophe” rethinks domination in the region and articulates new discourses on culture, memory, and identity. Starting in the introduction, which outlines the theoretical and critical contexts for studying Caribbean discourses of catastrophe, this dissertation expands on the concern in trauma studies for the subject’s loss of and return to the ordering logic of narrative to argue that representations of suffering also constitute “geographies of suffering” that re-situate the subject in space and geography with respect to world-systems like European colonialism and postmodern globalization. The ensuing four chapters and conclusion examine the contours of this ii notion in Caribbean discourses on catastrophe at the global, regional, and insular levels. Chapters one and four engage with the cosmopolitan layers of writing about Caribbean catastrophe in which authors including the Guadeloupean novelist Daniel Maximin and the Haitian writer Dany Laferrière among others use worldwide experiences of catastrophe to create new forms of global solidarities. Conversely, chapters two and three focus on the regional and local ripples of catastrophe across the Caribbean as well as in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Martinican literature. In this way, chapter two interrogates cross-island reflections on nineteenth-century earthquakes and ruins in Haiti and Guadeloupe while chapter three explores the place of the 1902 volcanic disaster with regards to shifting discourses on ethnic identity in the work of Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Suzanne Dracius. The conclusion, which highlights a burgeoning corpus of West Indian science fiction texts, builds on these previous reflections to demonstrate how Caribbean literature is also critically invested in exploring the possibilities of looming global ecological catastrophes. While the effects of climate change and the strains of capitalism augment global vulnerability to catastrophe, the varied responses by intellectuals and writers to catastrophes in this dissertation bespeak Caribbean resiliency against such disruptions and highlight these moments as critical points of departure for rethinking the region’s relations to Northern centers of power. Ultimately, this dissertation argues that reading this literature of catastrophe constitutes a critical practice of destabilizing the very hierarchies of power, cultures, and capital that marginalize the Caribbean and its inhabitants. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS My academic journey would not have been possible without the tremendous support of several institutions, many different individuals, and my friends and family. Rage, blow! You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout Till you have drench’d our steeples, drowned the cocks! You sulphurous and thought-executing fires, Vaunt-couriers to oak-cleaving thunderbolts, Singe my white head! And thou, all-shaking thunder, Strike flat the thick rotundity o’ the world, Crack Nature’s moulds, all germens spill at once That make ingrateful man! (3.2.1–9) At this moment in the play, Lear has descended into madness following the catastrophic collapse of both family and kingdom. The bonds of blood and the principle of sovereign authority have been betrayed, and as a result civilization as he understands it has fallen into disarray. ‘Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks’ is his desperate apostrophe to an enraged nature that is unmoved by the plight of a humanity that struggles with its place in the world, and Lear addresses the unruly storm that engulfs him not to seek deliverance or absolution, but to yield to a greater authority.

Through the works of Marie Vieux Chauvet, René Depestre, Frankétienne, Georges Castera, Kettly Mars and Dany Laferrière, my dissertation examines the effects of dictatorship on Haitian masculinity and assesses whether extreme oppression can be generative of alternative formulations of masculinity, especially with regard to power. For nearly thirty years, from 1957 to 1986, François and Jean-Claude Duvalier imposed a brutal totalitarian dictatorship that privileged tactics of fear, violence, and terror. Through their instrumentalization of terror and violence, the Duvaliers created a new hegemonic masculinity articulated through the nodes of power and domination. Moreover, Duvalierism developed and promoted a masculine identity which fueled itself through the exclusion and subordination of alternative masculinities, reflecting the autophagic reflex of the dictatorial machine which consumes its own resources in order to power itself. My dissertation probes the structure of Duvalierist masculinity and argues that dictatorial literature not only contests dominant discourses on masculinity, but offers a healing space in which to process the trauma of the dictatorship. 3 Acknowledgements There is a Korean proverb that says, “백지장도 맞들면 낫다.” It is better to lift together, even if it is just a blank sheet of paper. These doubts are repeated in the revised 1969 edition of John Russell Taylor's standard survey of recent British drama. The view in The Angry Theatre is that Stoppard lacks individuality, and that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a pale imitation of the theatre of the absurd, wrillen in "brisk, informal prose", and with a vision of character and life which seems "a very small mouse to emerge from such an imposing mountain".l In contrast, Jumpers was received with considerable critical approval. Jumpers and Osborne's A Sense of Detachment and Storey's Life Class might seem to be evidence that in the past few years the new British drama has reached maturity as a tradition of dramatic forms aitd dramatic conventions which exist as a pattern of meaningful relationships between plays and audiences in particular theatres.2 Jumpers includes a group of philosophical acrobats, and in style and meaning seems to be an improved version of Stoppard's trans· lation of Beckett's theatre of the absurd into the terms of the conversation about the death of tragedy between the Player and Rosencrantz: Player Why, we grow rusty and you catch us at the very point of decadence-by this time tomorrow we might have forgotten every­ thing we ever knew.

    Greek Theory of Tragedy: Aristotle's Poetics The classic discussion of Greek tragedy is Aristotle's Poetics. He defines tragedy as "the imitation of an action that is serious and also as having magnitude, complete in itself." He continues, "Tragedy is a form of drama exciting the emotions of pity and fear. Its action should be single and complete, presenting a reversal of fortune, involving persons renowned and of superior attainments, and it should be written in poetry embellished with every kind of artistic expression." The writer presents "incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to interpret its catharsis of such of such emotions" (by catharsis, Aristotle means a purging or sweeping away of the pity and fear aroused by the tragic action). The basic difference Aristotle draws between tragedy and other genres, such as comedy and the epic, is the "tragic pleasure of pity and fear" the audience feel watching a tragedy. In order for the tragic hero to arouse these feelings in the audience, he cannot be either all good or all evil but must be someone the audience can identify with; however, if he is superior in some way(s), the tragic pleasure is intensified. His disastrous end results from a mistaken action, which in turn arises from a tragic flaw or from a tragic error in judgment. Often the tragic flaw is hubris, an excessive pride that causes the hero to ignore a divine warning or to break a moral law. It has been suggested that because the tragic hero's suffering is greater than his offense, the audience feels pity; because the audience members perceive that they could behave similarly, they feel pity.

Class 1: Introduction to Beckett’s life, works, aesthetics and the nature of his revolutionary drama. Since all of the plays viewed in class were converted from stage to flm the differences between the two genres will be noted and opposing views by flm director Anthony Minghella and reviewer Tom McGurk considered. Class will view Catastrophe, a six minute flm version of Beckett’s play. Directed by David Mamet with Harold Pinter and John Gielgud in leading roles, this brief but complex work is perfect for introducing Beckett’s stage, characters, and dramatic strategy. Catastrophe was written in 1982 in support of Czech dissident Vaclav Havel and political versus universal applications will be considered.

    a filmography Foreword by The Irish Film Institute For over 60 years, the Irish Film Institute has been dedicated to the promotion of film culture in Ireland and therefore is proud to present this filmography of Samuel Beckett’s work. Beckett remains one of Ireland’s most important and influential artists and Samuel Beckett – A Filmography provides a snapshot of the worldwide reach and enduring nature of his creativity. As part of the Beckett centenary celebrations held in April 2006, the Irish Film Institute organised a diverse programme of films relating to the work of Beckett, including a tour of the line-up to cinemas around the country. Prior to this, the Irish Film Institute provided the unique opportunity to view all 19 films in the ‘Beckett on Film’ series by screening the entire selection in February 2001. This filmography provides the perfect accompaniment to these previous programmes and it illustrates that Beckett’s work will continue to be adapted for film and television worldwide for years to come.
