Historical Fact In 1934, the water supply at the Zoo was cut off for failure to pay a $195 bill. The Zoo’s flamboyant superintendent threatened to turn all the animals loose if the water was not turned back on. The water was restored and the animals remained in their exhibits. Black and White Ruffed Lemur Varecia variegata veriegata Lemurs get their name from the Ancient Roman belief that they were ghosts or spirits. They were mistaken for ghosts because of their nocturnal, stealth habits.

Historical Fact The Zoo opens the “Happy Family Building” in 1915, which housed mostly birds. Including quail, peacocks, pigeons, parakeets, ostriches, ducks, and a single turkey. Amur Leopard Panthera pardus orientalis Leopards are excellent climbers. They can drag a kill up to three times their own weight up a tree to avoid competition from other predators. They sometimes leave leftovers in the trees and return to feed later. Historical Fact Shasta, the first documented ‘liger’ in the U.S., was born on May 14, 1948, to a male lion and a female tiger at Utah’s Hogle Zoo to great fanfare, including an article in LIFE Magazine. Shasta is now on display at the Monte L. Bean Museum on the BYU campus. Grizzly Bear Ursus arctos horribilis Grizzlies usually take their time, but they can run as fast as a horse, about 30 miles per hour! They have been known to sprint 180 feet in just 3 seconds. That’s like running more than half a football field in 3 seconds!
