    Sports Facilities 73 Chapter 4 Sports Facilities I. Current Status of Sports Facilities 1. Public, Private and School Facilities According to the “Social Education Survey” of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the number of public sports facilities in Japan increased from the time the survey started in the 1950s through the 1990s. However, the number stayed almost at the same level after 2002. In 2011, the number of public sports facilities was 47,531 (Figure 4-1). On the other hand, the number of private sports facilities reached a peak in 1996 with 18,146, then continued to decline through 2015 where the number was recorded as 15,363. Moreover, many schools and educational organizations own sports facilities such as gymnasiums, playgrounds and swimming pools, which are used for their physical education classes or school sports clubs. According to the “Survey on the Current Status of Facilities for Physical Education and Sports Activities” (2008) conducted by MEXT, there were 136,276 “school sports facilities” (in elementary, junior high, high, vocational schools, etc.) and 8,375 sports facilities at universities, colleges and technical colleges. In addition, the number of sports facilities for the welfare of employees amounted to 6,827, and 5,807 facilities were recorded being located with activity centers such as community centers, youth education facilities and women’s education centers. In Table 4-1, the number of public sports facilities and school sports facilities are shown by facility types. The public sports facilities were dominated by multi-purpose playgrounds (7,568), followed by gymnasiums (7,112), and baseball and softball fields (6,267).

As a result of a power outage at one of the Olympic venues in Beijing this year an audit of the lighting system was undertaken. Following the audit the Organising Committee decided to investigate the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to protect the lighting system. Socomec’s UPS solution was selected as the units are designed to handle the level of technical requirement needed for the lighting system’s high frequency distortion and very low power factor. Following the success in Beijing the Organising Committee also decided that Socomec UPS would provide the reliable power supply in Shanghai so that viewers around the world can enjoy watching the live football games on TV without interruption. Socomec and its distributors will also provide around-the-clock service and on-call engineers during the entire period of the Olympic Games to ensure the equipment operates to its best performance at all times.     Company Overview History of Samsung Samsung's history dates to 1938 when "Samsung General Stores" opened in North Kyung- sang Province, Korea. The company conducted its trade business until the 1950s when it became a producer of basic commodities such as sugar and wool. In 1958, Samsung be- came involved in the insurance industry by incorporating a local fire & marine insurance company. During the 1960s, Samsung became one of the first Korean companies to actively expand its overseas trade. The group consolidated its manufacturing base by adding paper and fer- tilizer businesses. Samsung continued with expansion into the life insurance business, strengthened its retail operations and then moved into the communications sector, success- fully establishing a newspaper and a broadcasting company. The 1970s were a crucial period in shaping present-day Samsung. Its strengths in the semi- conductor, information and telecommunications industries grew from the significant in- vestments made during this period. Samsung also took a meaningful step toward heavy industries by venturing into aircraft manufacturing, shipbuilding and construction, as well as chemical industries. In the 1980s, Samsung expanded its efforts into exploring the larger markets overseas. The group began contributing to foreign economies by building facilities in the US, the UK and Portugal. Samsung also invested considerable resources into fostering Korea's rich heritage by supporting a wide range of cultural and artistic activities. The final decade of the 20th century saw the evolution of Samsung's new approach to management. Chairman Kun-Hee Lee's insightful vision and the introduction of the "New Management" in 1993 acknowledged the need to transform management philosophy in or- der to keep up with a rapidly changing global economy.
