Ministry of Health Statement on Influenza A H1N1 The Ministry of Health has been monitoring an increase in influenza-like illnesses circulating here in Barbados and the Caribbean Region.

As of Friday, November 13, testing done by the Public Health Laboratory indicated that 23 samples were positive for Influenza A. Of these, 10 cases were confirmed as H1N1 by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad. The Ministry of Health is awaiting results of test results of other samples and will update the public as soon as we receive word from the Public Health Laboratory and CARPHA.

The influenza virus is easily transmitted by coughing and sneezing. Therefore, good personal hygiene is essential to preventing influenza viruses from spreading. The public is advised to:

. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry them with disposable tissue since this is the most effective way of reducing transmission.

. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

. Keep unwashed hands away from eyes, nose and mouth.

. Cover one’s nose and mouth with tissue when coughing and sneezing. This will block the spread of the virus from your mouth or nose.

. In situations where tissue is not available persons should cough into the inner side of the elbow.

. Throw used tissues in a bin or collect in a tied plastic bag

. Frequently touched surfaces and objects such as doorknobs, keyboards, and phones may be contaminated and should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Early signs of Influenza A H1N1 may include:

Fever Sore throat Cough Chills Headache Muscle and joint pain Runny Nose Diarrhoea and vomiting

Persons with chronic conditions, e.g. diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, adults 60 years and older, children 5 years and under and pregnant women are advised to seek medical attention early. Persons experiencing symptoms are advised to avoid gatherings such as community events, work, school or church for 7-10 days after symptoms begin or until they have been symptom free for 24 hours.

Seek immediate medical care if your symptoms become severe or if you develop:

. Difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen,

. Sudden dizziness, confusion,

. Severe or persistent vomiting,

. Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough.

The Ministry of Health will continue its surveillance for influenza and will keep the public updated on the situation. The Barbados Advocate Sunday November 15, 2015 • 13 HRDS to focus on poverty reduction, sustainable growth

UICK, what’s the meaning of Qlife? Many of us may not be able to answer that off the top of our heads. But that doesn’t mean our kids don’t have questions – or need answers. “The sense that your personal life is meaningful to you is a cornerstone of psychological well-being,” says Michael F. Steger, director of the laboratory for Meaning and Quality of Life at Colorado State University. Not only that, it is “tightly tied to being happier, more positive, more confident, more caring, more helpful, more resilient, and more satisfied in your life, relationships, and work.” But helping your kids find meaning doesn’t mean parents have to crack all life’s ancient mysteries, Steger says. The trick is to understand the difference between the meaning of life and the meaning in life. “We do not have to start with the biggest and most troubling questions about our lives,” Steger says. “We can start with trying to figure out how, today, right now, we are going to do one thing that makes the story of our lives more positive, or makes a positive difference to someone else.” whether they care about others. The Best iPhone

Like all iPhones, the new iPhone 6S is well thought-out and beautifully made. The smaller of Apple’s two flagship mobile devices is the more sensible pick for most people, since it’s easier to slip into a pocket and it’s easier to use with one hand. But the most important reasons to buy one? Rock-solid security, supreme ease of use, the best mobile app ecosystem, top-quality construction, and in our testing, one of the very best cameras in any phone. If you want a phone that just works, get this one.

Sunday November 15, 2015 CHALLENGE LAUNCHED PARLIAMENTARY Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Sena- tor Harcourt Husbands, has dis- missed the view that the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics locally is aimed solely at producing more mathematicians and engineers. Rather, he says there should be focus on how these apply to society. “While exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics is impor- tant in itself, one does not want to deny that. What is even more important, I think, is how we use these things for the development of the society.” His comments came while speaking at the launch of the Sagicor Visionaries Challenge at the Olympus Theatres yes- terday. Senator Husbands also used the occa- sion to thank Sagicor for the role it has played in the area of development in the local education system, and commended the company for staging the Challenge. Also in attendance at this event was Chief Operating Officer,Sagicor Life Inc. and General Manager-Barbados Operations, Edward Clarke. He told the gathering, which included alumni of the Sagicor Visionaries Challenge, that the company was proud to once again usher in the third instalment of the pro- gramme. He explained that the pro- gramme was established in 2012 “as a way to foster a greater understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics among the region’s young people”. Clarke additionally highlighted some of the successes of participants who have been involved in the Challenge over the years. He stated that five local partici- pants were awarded Barbados Scholar- ships and Exhibitions, and have gone on to pursue studies in STEM areas over- Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harcourt Husbands, ad- seas.
