Tools such as shovels, spades, sledgehammers, crowbars and rail specific tools are covered by this standard. Jafco products that are BS 8020:2011 compliant are identified and tested in the following manner : The mechanical specifications of insulated tools shall conform to the relevant requirements of the appropriate British Standard for an uninsulated tool. BS EN 60900:2012 “hand tools for use up to 1000 V a.c. and 1500 V d.c”. Tools such as screwdrivers, sockets and pliers are covered by this standard. Marking Legibly and permanently marked with the following : • Manufacturer’s name or trade mark or other identification • Unique batch alpha code • Year of manufacture • Double triangle symbol with working voltage • BS Number of the relevant standard Key Features Electrical • Tested to 10000V a.c. • Pre-conditioned tool type test • Pre-conditioned material type test • Routine test of all finished tools Mechanical Conformance with relevant: • British Standards for tools • Rail industry specifications • Additional strength and deflection requirements Certification • All materials/tools marked 1000V • Unique marking for full traceability www.jafcotools.com 5 In-House Testing Facilities J Testing Jafco Pre-Tested Component Warehouse Type test : carried out on at least 3 insulating hand tools that are representative of the tool category. Temperature test : Materials & Finished Product : Cooling chamber for 2 Hours at (-20) °c Heat Chamber for 2 Hours at (70) °c Abrasion test : Soaking / Pre-Conditioning Materials Over-guard & Under guard material has to be of a suitable hardness to ensure durability Grip adhesion test : If applicable Handle pull apart test Handle bend test Insulation bond test Abrasion Testing Hardness Testing Electrical test : Insulating material : A voltage of 10 kVa a.c.(r.m.s) 50 Hz is applied continuously for 3 minutes with no electrical breakdown and the leakage not exceeding 1mA. In all cases this test is carried out after conditioning (soaking for 24hrs and wiping dry) Static Load Testing Electrical test : Finishing tool : A voltage of 10 kVa a.c.(r.m.s) 50 Hz is applied continuously for 3 minutes with no electrical breakdown and the leakage not exceeding 1mA. This is carried out whilst the tool is immersed in tap water up to a level of 24mm from the nearest non-insulated part of the tool. Flammability test : Electrical Testing Facility on one sample of each different insulating materials. Routine test : Carried out on all finished insulated hand tools • Visual check • Electrical test – no conditioning and the duration of the test is 1 minute. Sample test : Insulating material one sample from each batch. Marking and Tracability Finished Product Tested as per the type tests – sample size for testing would depend on the batch size. Jafco Tools batch sizes would mean the number of pieces for sample testing would be typically 5 pieces. Records of all the tests that are carried out are kept for a minimum of 7 years. 6 www.jafcotools.com Rail Track Tools Insulated and Non-Insulated Jafco is the major supplier in the U.K. of insulated and non-insulated railway track maintenance tools.
