  • The Charismatic Leadership and Cultural Legacy of Stan Lee
REINVENTING THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO: THE CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL LEGACY OF STAN LEE Hazel Homer-Wambeam Junior Individual Documentary Process Paper: 499 Words !1 “A different house of worship A different color skin A piece of land that’s coveted And the drums of war begin.” -Stan Lee, 1970 THESIS As the comic book industry was collapsing during the 1950s and 60s, Stan Lee utilized his charismatic leadership style to reinvent and revive the superhero phenomenon. By leading the industry into the “Marvel Age,” Lee has left a multilayered legacy. Examples of this include raising awareness of social issues, shaping contemporary pop-culture, teaching literacy, giving people hope and self-confidence in the face of adversity, and leaving behind a multibillion dollar industry that employs thousands of people. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary.

The later chapters are each dedicated to bigger titles, namely Thor, Elektra, Hulk, Spider-man, Thunderbolts, Avengers, X-Men, and a chapter collecting some other titles. The art is fantastic of course, characterised by what the editors would say, "Tight pencils". The covers are nicely printed large, with the white space occasionally filled by the inked versions or pencils. You'll see quite a lot of pieces beautifully coloured by Rain Beredo. This is a best-of-the-best collection after all, so some covers have to be left out. There are a couple of pages on interior panel art. I The Marvel Art of Mike Deodato the play on title logos when he's given the freedom to do so, especially those from the She-Hulk series. I also like the Spider-man and X-men art. The text comes in the form of first person commentary and also quotes from other artists. There's quite a bit on his background. If you're wondering what's deal with him and Deodato studios, it's all in the interview as well. It's interesting to find out that he's into martial arts as a sport.

  • Stan Lee and the Marvel Revolution
HOME > PLANET ENGLISH > STAN LEE AND THE MARVEL REVOLUTION English Stan Lee and the Marvel Revolution Level A2 28 novembre 2018 Last 12 November one of the most important authors in the history of comic books passed away: his name was Stan Lee and he was 95 years old. Lee wrote hundreds of comics and invented dozens of characters. He worked for many years for the publisher Marvel Comics, for whom he created, among others, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Black Panther and the X-Men. Today these characters are more than fifty years old, but they are still very popular. They are the protagonists of comic books, but also of video games, animated and live-action series and feature films. The ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ – which includes the films of just some of Marvel’s superheroes – is the highest- grossing film franchise in history, earning more than even the Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises. Lee ‘signed’ these films by appearing in them as an actor, playing short, funny cameos. Lee’s superheroes Lee was full of energy and ideas. He started working when he was very young. After a series of odd jobs, he began working for a comic book publisher, Timely Comics (later renamed Marvel Comics). It was 1939. He liked writing, but he felt that the comic books of the time were too simple. After many years of writing what he called “silly little comics” he was ready to quit, but his wife told him: “before you do, why don’t you do one comic book the way you would like to do it?” If his boss fired him it wouldn’t matter – he was going to quit anyway.
