  • Beckley Native Wins the Greenbrier Classic's $20,000 Volunteer
Beckley native wins The Greenbrier Classic’s $20,000 Volunteer Giveaway WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – (August 3, 2017): Jan Datsko of Beckley, W.Va., was the lucky winner in The Greenbrier Classic’s $20,000 Volunteer Giveaway. Datsko, who has volunteered every year since the tournament’s inception in 2010, worked in sponsor services this year and was surprised to get the call that he had won the prize. “I was shocked,” he said. “I don’t usually win much. My wife’s pretty lucky, but I’m not. In fact, when they called and told me, she said, ‘Are you sure they didn’t say Peggy?’” Volunteers at The 2017 Greenbrier Classic earned a raffle ticket at the completion of their fourth shift. Each volunteer earned an additional ticket for each shift worked after the fourth shift. The winner was drawn at the conclusion of the tournament and received $10,000 in cash and $10,000 to the charity of his choice. Datsko selected The Beckley Area Foundation as his charity. Founded in 1985 with a gift of $1.1 million, The Beckley Area Foundation now has assets of nearly $40 million in 430 different funds managed by four trustee banks. Only the income from these funds is spent, and it is used to meet the community’s many charitable needs. “The money stays in the community and helps local needs,” said Datsko. “That’s what I wanted to do.” Datsko wasn’t the only lucky winner during The Greenbrier Classic in 2017. Gregory Bowser of Beaver, Pa., walked away with a brand new Ford Explorer XLT from My Local Ford Dealers as part of a giveaway promotion, which ran throughout the tournament.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans Record Book (est. 2017, thru 2019) *2017 & 2018 Format Information: An historic change was made to the format of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2017, making the event a two-player team event featuring Foursomes (alternate shot) during the first and third rounds and Four-ball (best ball) during the second and fourth rounds. A change was made at the 2018 Zurich Classic of New Orleans , with the two formats switching rotations. Rounds one and three in the two-player team event featured the Four-ball (best ball) format, while the second and fourth rounds used the Foursomes (alternate shot) format. Since the formation of the PGA TOUR (1968), the Zurich Classic became the first official event to utilize Foursomes as part of a team competition. The 2017 Zurich Classic was the first official PGA TOUR team event in 36 years. Before that, the last official PGA TOUR team event was the 1981 Walt Disney World National Team Championship held at the Magnolia, Palm and Lake Buena Vista courses at Disney. Vance Heafner and Mike Holland won that title. The tournament became an individual stroke-play event in 1982. The Zurich Classic awards FedExCup points and official money and counts as an official victory for the members of the winning team.
