A broad survey of music history will be traced and some of the greatest literature-from Renaissance through to the presentÐwill be "explained-symphony, sonata, concerto, opera etc. Throughout the course, we will listen to carefully selected excerpts of compositions and develop a technique for listening to music and aesthetically responding to it. Attending concerts-on campus and in Chicagoland's rich cultural environment-will be an integral part of this course, and to improve one's musical perception and appreciation. Some in-class performing, improvisation, or presentation ("Show and Tell"!) will also add to the overall musical experience. TEACHING METHOD: This class is primarily a lecture, but class discussion and involvement will be an expected and important element. Audio/visual resources will be used on a regular basis. Responses to listening examples, and "philosophical areas", will lead to a good deal of understanding-and appreciation-of this fascinating and diverse subject matter. TEXTS: A course packet/reader, compiled by the instructor, will be the primary resource. It is not my intention to have students purchasing expensive books. (Packet will be available in March from a local retailer, probably Quartet Copies.) Attendance at first class mandatory. Currently the richest 20 percent of humanity garners 83 percent of global income, while the poorest 20 percent of the world's people struggles to survive on just 1 percent of the global income (Sivard 1993; World Bank 1994). During the 1990s, as capitalism triumphantly secures its global reach, anticommunist ideologies hammer home socialism's inherent failure and the Left increasingly moves into the professional middle class. many of western feminism's earlier priorities-commitment to social transformation, attention to the political economy of patriarchy, analysis of the perva­ sive social structures that link and divide women~have been obscured or actively dismissed. Various forms of feminist cultural politics that take as their starting point gender, race, class, sexuality, or coalitions among them have increasingly displaced a systemic perspective that links the battle against women's oppression to a fight against capitalism. The archive collected in Materialist Feminism: A Reader in Class, Difference, and Women's Lives is a reminder that despite this trend feminists have continued to find in historical materialism a powerful theoretical and political resource. The tradi- . tion of feminist engagement with marxism emphasizes a perspective on social life that refuses to separate the materiality of meaning, identity, the body, state, or nation from the requisite division of labor that undergirds the scramble for profits in capitalism's global system.

    INTRODUCTION WHAT IS WORK? Gender at the Crossroads of Home, Family, and Business from the Early Modern Era to the Present Raffaella Sarti, Anna Bellavitis, and Manuela Martini 1. What is work? A fresh perspective from the (alleged) margins What is work? The question chosen as a title for this volume is an ambi- tious one. We are obviously aware that a huge body of literature on work exists, and we certainly do not pretend we can give a defi nite answer to the question,1 which may not even be possible.2 Instead, we will use this question as a tool to interrogate history, the social sciences, and also pol- itics. Such a question prompts us in fact to adopt a critical and diversifi ed view of work and, consequently, of economic and social policies, too. On the other hand, establishing the boundaries, implications, and stakes of a new characterization of work is a crucial issue in the contemporary de- bate, and is obviously also motivated by the ongoing dramatic economic, technological, organizational, social, and cultural changes affecting the world of work. Let us start with a telling example. “Italy is a Democratic Republic, founded on work,” article 1 of the Italian Constitution, written after the Second World War and enforced in 1948, authoritatively states3: this implied and still implies a kind of overlap between enjoying citizenship and working. When the Italian Constitution was enforced, according to the Italian population censuses as many as three-quarters of adult Italian women were not working or, more precisely, were economically “inac- tive.” What did they do? About 60 percent of them were housewives: 2 Raffaella Sarti, Anna Bellavitis, and Manuela Martini they were therefore likely to actually work very hard.

Martin, Chair California Hard Core is a narrative history of the pornographic film industry in California from 1967 to 1978, a moment when Americans openly made, displayed, and watched sexually explicit films. Two interrelated questions animate this project: Who moved the pornographic film from the margins of society to the mainstream of American film culture? What do their stories tell us about sex and sexuality in the U.S. in the last third of the twentieth century? The earlier academic literature concentrates on pornographic film and political debates surrounding it rather than industry participants and their contexts. The popular literature, meanwhile, is composed almost entirely of book-length oral histories and autobiographies of filmmakers and models. California Hard Core helps to close the divide between these two literatures by documenting not only an eye-level view of work from behind the camera, on the set, and in the movie theater, but also the ways in which consumers received pornographic films, placing the reader in the viewing position of audience members, police officers, lawyers, judges, and anti-pornography activists.

However, this term hides a long list of violent and abusive acts which are severely punishable under criminal codes and by international conventions: torture, rape, abuse of vulnerability, pimping, human trafficking, incitement to sexist and racist hatred, sexist and racist insults… Words can be powerful, they can provide impunity for criminals. All over the world, lawsuits and trials are multiplying and survivors are speaking out. In France, in September, a preliminary investigation against the pornography site “Jacquie and Michel” for rape and pimping was opened by the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office. In October, four French pornographers, producers for “Jacquie et Michel” and Dorcel were indicted for rape, pimping and human trafficking. What is now referred to as the “porn industry”, with billions of dollars in profits worldwide (219,985 videos are viewed every minute on Pornhub), actually conceals large-scale criminal networks of pimping and human trafficking. The methods used by the porn video production industry are sophisticated and identical to those used by human trafficking networks: grooming, trust-building, submission through rape, exploitation, coercion, and reversal of guilt. It is based on the age-old and misogynistic myth of a woman as a sexual object who is eager for self-destruction. Violence with serious psychotraumatic consequences The filming of sexual acts under economic and psychological coercion, sexual assault and rape, even acts of torture and barbarism are the daily reality of the pornocriminal system.

Methods: Anonymously completed questionnaires were received from 4,769 female undergraduates, recruited using randomized cluster sampling by type of university and students’ major and grade. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the effects of only-child on sexual knowledge, attitudes and practices among female undergraduates. Results: Of 4,769 female undergraduate students, 41.0% were only-child and 59.0% were students with siblings. Compared with students with siblings, only-child students scored higher on sex-related knowledge, were more inclined to agree with premarital sex, multiple sex partners, one-night stands, extramarital lovers and homosexuality, and were more likely to have a boyfriend and experience sexual intercourse (73.6% vs. 61.4%; 24.0% vs. 14.0%). Only-children were less likely to experience coercion at first sex and have first sexual intercourse with men not their ‘‘boyfriends’’ than children with siblings (3.3% vs. 6.4%; 20.7% vs. 28.8%). There were no significant differences on other risky sexual behaviors (e.g. multiple sex partners and inconsistent condom use) between the only-child students and students with siblings.

    HOUSEWORK AND SOCIAL SUBVERSION: WAGES, HOUSEWORK, AND FEMINIST ACTIVISM IN 1970S ITALY AND CANADA CHRISTINA ROUSSEAU A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO December 2016 © Christina Rousseau, 2016 Abstract My dissertation, Housework and Social Subversion: Wages, Housework, and Feminist Activism in 1970s Italy and Canada, presents a history of the Wages for Housework movements in Italy and Canada (1972-1978), looking at the parallel development of autonomist feminist politics in these locations. Based on a series of interviews with feminists involved in the movement, my dissertation highlights the significant political value in the way the group’s theoretical perspective influenced our current understanding of social reproduction. Social reproduction refers to the unpaid activities associated with family and societal maintenance – procreation, socialization, and nurturance – as well as paid work in social sectors such as health care, education, childcare, and social services. In the context of Wages for Housework, my dissertation re-examines the movement’s understandings of wages, housework, and the gendered relations of production in the home. In critiquing the capitalist, patriarchal, imperialist nuclear family, they re- conceptualized wages and housework in a way that allowed for the uncovering of the most hidden aspect of housework: emotional labour and care. Looking at the parallel development of Wages for Housework movements in Italy and Canada, I also highlight the emergence of similar tensions regarding the demand for wages and the role of the working class housewife in their analyses.

Using the concept of invitational rhetoric from Sonja K. Foss and Cindy L. Griffin’s essay “Beyond Persuasion: A Proposal for Invitational Rhetoric” as a framework and method of writing this thesis, I wish to propose my ideas in feminist fashion rather than through what Foss and Griffin believe is the masculine/patriarchal practice of traditional rhetoric, or persuasion.
