Six years later, in 1891, the Ichabod foot- ball tradition entered a new era as Washburn played its first season of intercollegiate com- petition. According to Washburn records, “Fifty years ago the Washburn college students organized the first college there were no games played in 1895, allow- football team in the state. A young Englishman, who worked in the Santa Fe ing the 1991 squad to celebrate the 100th shops, brought with him from the old country an enthusiasm for the Rugby season in Washburn football history. game. He organized a Santa Fe football team and challenged the Washburn students to organize and play. We accepted the challenge, organized a team Washburn celebrated the 50th anniver- and beat him. We then induced other colleges in the state to get into the field, sary of football’s debut on campus in 1935. and until after I graduated Washburn college our team was unbeaten on the Robert Stone, a member of the team in 1885, football field. As I recollect, the first defeat was suffered at Columbia, Mo., in 1890.” - By Robert Stone - Topeka-Journal penned a brief sketch of the first 50 years of Washburn football which appeared in the Oct. 30, 1935 issue of the Topeka Journal. Washburn Conference Ties Throughout its athletic history, Washburn has looked beyond the state borders of Kansas to find conference affiliations. The university has competed in nine different Ichabod Football Washburn conferences, including its current association with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), a NCAA Division II league of institutions in Missouri and Kansas. Washburn’s longest association was with the Central Intercollegiate Conference, of which the Ichabods were members from 1941 to 1968. Like the MIAA, the CIC included institutions in Missouri and Kansas. Membership in three conferences were more regional in nature, forcing the Ichabods to travel throughout five states. The Missouri Valley Conference consisted of schools in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Missouri, many of whom are cur- rently NCAA Division I member institutions. Both the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Great Plains Athletic Conference put the Ichabods on the road to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska and Kansas. Washburn has won two outright conference championships, while earning co- championships four times. The Ichabods were Central Conference co-champions in 1931. They held the title of Central Intercollegiate Conference co-champions in 1949, 1953, and 1954. In 1964, Washburn won its first outright championship by claiming the Central Intercollegiate Conference title. Washburn’s most recent conference crown was won in 1983 as members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference. 99 2003 Media Guide ICHABOD HONOR ROLL CoSIDA NCAA Little All-America Will Kerns, HB Rodger Tiesing, DT Division II All-America 1964 Bob Hardy, HB, 1st Dan Smith, DE 1965 Steve Milosovich, OL 1995 Michael Dritlein, WR, 2nd 1964 Dode Lesser, OT, DE, HM Joe Schartz, QB Pat Scherzer, HB Michael Dritlein, WR 1964 Pete Roscetti, E Daktronics NAIA Academic Tony Scollieri, LB Dode Lesser, OL All-Midwest Region All-American 1994 Michael Dritlein, WR Bob Hardy, B 2002 Eric Roth, P, 1st 1986 Tim Beasley, P, 1st Beau Caryl, DE Rodger Tiesing, DE 1999 Kevin Wheeler, OL, 2nd Mark Brinker, FS, 1st Jeff Koch, LB Bob Noblitt, DL 1996 Zuri Stokes, CB, 2nd Darrin Rohr, RB, 1st Kirk Potter, WR Ron Katzenmier, DB Leroy Harman 1995 Michael Dritlein, WR, 1st Pete Flannigan, WR, HM Joe Schartz, QB Pat Scherzer, DB Mike McGreevy, TE, HM 1993 Michael Dritlein, WR 1963 Bill Harper, RB (1946-49) Football Gazette Mike VanSickle, DB, HM Brett Miller, LB Bob Noblitt, DL All-America Aaron Walker, WR,HM Kirk Potter, WR Jack Clanton, DL 1988 Troy Slusser, WR, 1st 1992 Kirk Potter, WR Curt Miller, DB 1995 Michael Dritlein, WR, 1st MIAA Freshman of the Year 1991 Tracey Hoffman, WR 1962 Warren Dorby, OL 2002 Sam Sissom, WR Dan Holloway, QB 1961 Bob Pfannenstiel, G Cacuts/Snow Bowl All-Star 2000 Tyler Schuerman, QB Scot Koranda, LB Warren Dorby, G Game Participant 1990 Craig Beam, DB 1960 Dick Patterson, DT 1998 Joe Busby, OL All-MIAA Dan Holloway, QB Jerry Hedger, OT 1999 Marc Nardella, WR 2002 Eric Roth, P, 1st Scot Koranda, DB Bob Ogle, HB 2001 Colon McNeal, WR Tim Watts, OT, 2nd Jon Bingesser, HB 2002 Eric Roth, P 2001 Colon McNeal, WR, 2nd All-CSIC Dale Milles, G Art Fletcher Anders Grove, OT, 2nd 1988 Troy Slusser, WR 1957 Don Luttrell, HB (1946-49) GTE / CoSIDA 2000 Brandon Rainer, FB, 2nd Steve Sheehan, OL 1954 Nick Cossman, T Academic All-America Jared Barge, OC, 2nd Barry Griffiths, QB Chet Duncan, TE 1999 Aaron Doonan, DE, 2nd Eric Taylor, DE, 2nd 1987 Jim Butler, DE Chuck Nelson, QB 1995 Michael Dritlein, WR, 2nd Chad Todd, K, 2nd Mike Gibson, OG 1953 Ralph Bowen, TE 1993 Michael Dritlein, WR,2nd 1999 Corey Phipps, LB, 2nd Troy Slusser, WR Chet Duncan, TE Aaron Doonan, DE, 2nd Troy Stedman,OL Bill Baker, HB GTE / CoSIDA Marc Nardella, WR, 2nd 1986 Charles Braden, DT 1952 Don Bliss, T Academic All-District 1998 Marc Nardella, WR, 1st Mark Brinker, FS Bill Baker, HB 1999 Aaron Doonan, DE, 1st Joe Busby, OG, 1st Nick Kresic, PK 1951 Ivan Crabaugh, HB 1998 Aaron Doonan, DT, 1st Lydell Flowers, RB, 2nd Jerry Nall, OT 1949 Art Fletcher, HB Joe Banks, WR, 2nd Travis Smith, SS, 2nd Shawn Rose, LB Leroy Harmon, HB Pat Scherzer 1997 Darren Heer, FB, 1st 1997 Tony Scollieri, LB, 2nd 1985 Charlie
