The Ordination of Deacons The Ordination of Deacons by the Bishop of Sheffield The Right Reverend Pete Wilcox Sunday 27 June 2021 Welcome to Sheffield Cathedral We welcome all Christians, including baptized children of any age, to receive Holy Communion at Sheffield Cathedral. Gluten free wafers are available, please ask when the minister approaches you. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to receive a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please hold this booklet so that it can be clearly seen by the ministers. The instructions to sit, kneel and stand are only suggestions: please feel able to adopt whatever posture you wish. Notes on worship during Covid Please do not greet each other with a handshake before or after the service. Similarly, we ask you not to share the peace physically with anyone outside your household. We will not take a collection during the service. You are asked to put your gift into a collection box before or after the service. During Coronavirus we follow the pre-Reformation practice in the Cathedral. The President of the Eucharist alone receives from the cup, as a representative of all the faithful, everyone is welcome to receive the consecrated bread. Please stand and remain at your seats as the ministers distribute the consecrated bread. We ask everyone to use the hand gel provided as the minister approaches you, before you receive. We particularly request you to take your service booklet away with you, as this is safer for the Cathedral staff. Music during the service At this service the cantors sing the Riverside Setting by Anthony Caesar, 1924- 2018. We welcome Ian Seddon as our organist. Practicalities, accessibility and sustainability Please ensure all mobile phones and tablets are switched off during the service. Lavatories, including accessible provision (using a RADAR key), are situated in the Community Resource Centre, through the 1554 Coffee Shop, and on the left. An induction loop is available for those who are hard of hearing. Please turn your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting. You are kindly requested to refrain from making any audio or visual recording of any part of this service without the written permission of the Acting Dean of Sheffield. Our service sheet is printed on paper which comes from sustainable forests. Large print copies of this booklet are available. Preface The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, The Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making Him known to those in your care? Declaration of Assent I do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of service which are authorized or allowed by Canon. Bach, 1685-1750 4 The Gathering and Presentation As the Bishop’s procession enters, we stand as the cantors sing from the following: Rhuddlan Gracious God, in adoration saints with joy before you fall; only when our hearts are leaden can we fail to hear their call: ‘Come with wonder, serve with gladness God whose power created all.’ Earth and sky in silent praises speak to those with eyes to see; all earth’s living creatures echo ‘God has made us!’ So may we come with wonder, serve with gladness him through whom they came to be. You have made us in your image, breathed your Spirit, giv’n us birth; Jesus calls, whose cross has given every life eternal worth, ‘Come with wonder, serve with gladness, let God’s will be done on earth!’ Earth by war and want is threatened; deep the roots of fear and greed; let your mercy be our measure as we see our neighbour’s need, come with wonder, serve with gladness, share your gift of daily bread. All Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Bishop There is one body and one spirit. All There is one hope to which we were called; Bishop one Lord, one faith, one baptism, All one God and Father of all. Bishop Peace be with you All and also with you. After some words of welcome, the Bishop says: God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light. The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom. To serve this royal priesthood, God has given a variety of ministries. Deacons are ordained so that the people of God may be better equipped to make Christ known. Theirs is a life of visible self-giving. Christ is the pattern of their calling and their commission; as he washed the feet of his disciples, so they must wash the feet of others. We sit. The Presentation The ordinands are presented by the Archdeacons: Archdeacons Bishop Pete, I present these persons to be ordained to the office of deacon in the Church of God: The Archdeacon gives the name of each candidate and the parishes in which they are to serve. Bishop Have those whose duty it is to know these ordinands and examine them found them to be of godly life and sound learning? Diocesan Director of Ordinands They have. 6 Bishop Do they believe them to be duly called to serve God in this ministry? Diocesan Director of Ordinands They do. The Bishop addresses the ordinands: Bishop Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry? Ordinands I do so believe. Bishop I invite the Registrar to confirm that those to be ordained have taken the necessary oaths and made the Declaration of Assent. Registrar They have duly taken the oath of allegiance to the Sovereign and the oath of canonical obedience to the Bishop. They have affirmed and declared their belief in ‘the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness’. The Collect Bishop Let us pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We remain seated. God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servants now to be ordained the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. 7 The Liturgy of the Word The Reading: Jeremiah 1. 4 - 10 Ordinand A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you.

    Sheffield Cathedral: Chapel Lighting (1 of 2 projects funded) Awarded £65,077 in March 2015 The need The lighting and wiring in two chapels, the All Saints Chapel and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit (crypt chapel) had become unreliable, making them difficult to use for services and occasionally dangerous for visitors to enter. Components could no longer be obtained for the existing systems, which were in urgent need of attention: many fittings had failed through overheating or through faulty wiring. The crypt chapel was created in the 1930s as a First World War memorial, and the Dean observed It is quite distressing at times that elderly mourners feel anxious about entering the chapel because it is so poorly lit. Outcomes Now the lighting requires routine maintenance only. The All Saints Chapel is now a fitting memorial to those interred there from the York and Lancaster Regiment.     PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year.     2 | David Clover Competion for Singers CITY OF SHEFFIELD TEACHERS’ CHOIR The City of Sheffield Teachers’ Choir was formed on Thursday, 7 November, 1968 by Sheffield’s then Music Adviser, Dr. David Clover. It was a direct result of the daily choral sessions of his initial residential music course held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick. This was the first time that Sheffield music teachers had ever come together in this way and it was a historic occasion for Sheffield music. The choir’s first performance was the Festival of Lessons and Carols in Sheffield Cathedral during Christmastide 1968. For eleven years the choir flourished under David Clover’s baton, raising much money for children’s charities, both local and national, and giving opportunities for those connected, at that time, with the education service in Sheffield to come together and sing for the sheer joy of singing. Since his death in January 1979 the choir has continued to perform both at home and abroad. It celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2008 with a concert at St. John’s Church, Ranmoor, on Friday 7 November. The repertoire is wide. Over the years performances have included Mozart’s Requiem, Dvorak’s Mass in D, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Magnificat, Haydn’s Nelson, Harmoniemesse and Maria Theresa Masses, sacred music by various composers, church services, Stainer’s Crucifixion, Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary, William Lloyd Webber’s The Saviour and The Divine Compassion, concert versions of Gilbert and Sulivan operettas, opera choruses, part songs, spirtuals, folk songs and songs from the shows, as well as Festivals of Lessons and Carols.
